When it comes to writing I have the hardest time in just getting started. I’m a horrible procrastinator and I overthink about my writing before I have even started a sentence. I worry that I will fail to get my point across or sometimes that I have a point at all. I worry that my writing is just a stream of consciousness on paper and that it will confuse any reader unfortunate enough to stumble across my meandering words. For this assignment I ended up using the double-entry journal note taking style. Of the few techniques mentioned, this one seemed geared towards my key issues. Growing up I have never found myself a connoisseur of reading, writing, or just the subject of English. Matter of fact I could consider my appeal to be quiet irritated at the matter altogether. One of the many important skills I have learned over the years is to start my writing process with planning. I do this by developing a list of ideas I could write about. For example, when planning my narrative paper I wrote out a list of possible stories I could talk about. I knew the narrative paper had to be around five pages so I tried to come up with a story that involves good details so I would not bore the reader. I made up a list of about five or six stories I had in mind and tried to think about how I could talk about that specific story in my mind. In order to remember the ideas I had, I would make notes next to my story topics. I try to make my plans and notes very neat and organized to avoid confusion. As I sit here and ponder over the last semester, I smile remembering what my thoughts were before I started. I was excited thinking about joining this semester, noticing that I had English 111 as one of my courses. This will be a breeze I thought. Writing and I go together hand in hand well, and I bet this will be one of my favorite courses that I’ll ace with flying colors. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I think that was because I didn’t realize what all goes into writing. I have always been homeschooled and never had to write very many essays, although I loved writing. It all changed when I joined this semester and got to write three entirely different essays. I remember almost being in tears, looking at the highlights, when my first essay came back. I smile now, realizing that I never realized all the small little details that are easily overlooked that goes into writing. I don’t think I could have gotten through this semester without “The Little Sea Gull” handbook and the patience and help of Mrs. Wisdom.
Every great writer had to start somewhere, and they all started out with some weaknesses. While these writers grew, so did their strengths and their weaknesses. Throughout this short eight-week course, I went through a whole lot at a fast pace. I felted that I did a good job keeping up with the class, and staying on top of my work. Also while going through this class I learned that I had a few strengths and some weaknesses. I learned that I had strengths of imagination and clarity, with those I also have a weakness with my time management.
I believe my way of writing is a mix of free style writing with a slight structured sense while expressing one thought onto paper. I would go about finding a main topic that I would like to write about and then layout the foundation of how I want the writing to form; this helps me envision my writing coming to life. This type of method is something I always do in order ensure I don’t lose my thoughts that I have previously came up with to go along with it. I got a C on my first chemistry research paper. ‘It’s awkwardly written,’ my teacher scrawled on the paper in red ink.‘Most of your information is correct but it’s hard to read and harder to understand.’ I was furious. My writing was great as far as I was concerned. I aced all my English essays and she thought she could tell me my writing was awkward? The problem was clearly her. My story as a writer has constantly changed as I've gotten older and experienced new writing situations in my job field in the military. When I was younger, of course I had to write for school like everyone else but I also used to write short stories in my free time, that I would keep to myself. I enjoyed writing in my free time more because it allowed me the freedom to write stories on what I wanted and at my pace and it was like a hobby. As I got older my writing then started to become solely work related and I stopped writing in my free time. When I sit down to write, I must do so in a clean, well-organized, and well-lit area. The space must be free from distractions, such as the television or radio, so that I am able to focus and gather my thoughts. I like to begin my writings similar to the way William Stafford says he starts, "To get started I will accept anything that occurs to me." Writing down any thought that will help support and provoke more thoughts and ideas. When my thoughts become cloudy, I like to rise from my seat and walk around speaking out ideas to myself. I find this practice helps to jumpstart my brain activity and clear my foggy mind.
When I am out, I observe the world around me. My biggest fear is not having anything to write about, so I am always looking for material. I watch people, I talk to strangers, I read as much as I can. Every conversation, mistake, heartbreak, painting, and novel are stored inside of me. I pull from this place when I am writing. My personal writing process is probably somewhat similar to what other students do for theirs, because we may have been taught similar ways. I have my writing process broken down into a few different parts. First, I do research and gather information if research is necessary to the paper’s topic. Then, I would start writing the introduction to the paper. Next, I do the actual writing of the paper and describe each topic in more detail. The last step is to, I revise it in case of any errors. I also revise it to make it better. Each step is important in order to make my writing good. I will discuss in depth and detail about each part of my writing process.
Everyone has to write at some point. Whether it’s writing a paper or assignment for class, creating an email, making a grocery list, even when everyone texts their best friends. And there is a certain sense of peace that comes over some when they write. I believe that the more you write each day, the more peaceful and experienced you become. This point may not come natural at first, but with time, it’ll become something as natural as breathing, my life is an example.
Writing has always been one of the things that I’m passionate about. Whenever I have something on my mind, I would jot it down or type it in my notes. No matter how small or pathetic it seems, I would always write it down, because you never know when you’re going to go back to it and create something grand, out of inspiration. People would think that a person like me would write down poems or novel ideas. That’s completely true, but I also write down recipes, grocery lists, hate lists and literally anything that comes to my mind. I’m the type of person that does not like to miss anything, forget anything and likes to include everything. People would say I’m a perfectionist or a control freak and as much as I would hate to admit that, it is true.
