When I began middle school I did not enjoy writing. I thought that it was a waste of time, but now I realize that it is a good method of getting my ideas and points across. Now, I enjoy writing and my writing has improved. I think I am good at writing research papers and papers about true stories and events. I could improve on writing fictional stories where I have to come up with my own stories and ideas. Now that my middle school career is coming to a close I look back on my analysis, argument, and narrative essays from the year.
My first example of writing is from my Personal Narrative, “The Knuckle” from the middle of eighth grade. Looking back, I thought I did a good job in telling the story in an interesting way. In the essay, I told
Thinking about a topic to write about is not always easy, and sometimes the process of writing can end up being difficult. Jennifer Jacobson discusses strategies to overcome the struggles that young writers can encounter while writing. I was interested in her book No More “I’m Done!” Fostering Independent Writers in the Primary Grades because I feel like as a future teacher this could be a frequent problem among students. From reading this book, I hoped that I would learn useful strategies that I could use to help students overcome their problems with writing. After reading this book, I do believe that Jacobson has provided me with plenty of methods to use. I was surprised at the depth that she goes into in her text. There is a vast amount
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
The following final drafts, drafts, notes, and peer review letters represent my growth as a writer in the span of one semester. I learned quite a bit about myself and the things i can do to improve my writing and the methods of doing proper research in order to write a proper research essay. Though i have seen an improvement within these essays, i feel i still have much to practice upon.
The first work I chose was my first paper I had written in college. The literacy narrative which I had titled Think Quick, was a challenge for me to write. I would normally sit down at my computer and just start writing my paper from the introduction to conclusion. This time I decided to try something different, I started with the body paragraphs. I also found it hard to incorporate someone else’s work into my paper. Once my paper was finished, I read over it to find mistakes and correct them.
My relationship with writing has been much like roller coaster. Some experiences I had no control over. Other experiences were more influential. Ultimately it wasn’t until I started reading not because I had to read but because I wanted to, that's when my relationship reached change. I would have probably never cared about writing as I do today if it weren't for the critics in my family. When I was a child, my aunts and uncles always been in competition with who's child is better in school. I have always hated reading and writing because of the pressure to prove my family wrong was overwhelming for me. I had to prove them wrong and show them that I was capable of being "smart" which according to them was getting straight A's in all your classes.
Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
From to beginning of Ninth grade to date I have grown in leaps and bounds in numerous areas of writing. At the beginning of Ninth grade I wrote similarly to a middle schooler, now, I have transitioned to writing as a high schooler. Some traits of a high school writer are sentence fluency, vocabulary, transitions, simple sentence starts, and a variety of words. Over the seven and a half months that I have been in high school, I have, most noticeably, improved my transitions, vocabulary, and writing speed.
Each writer establishes their own writing process. For some, writing may come naturally and is fairly easy to pick up on, while others may struggle with writing. Fortunately, I feel as if writing comes naturally to me. As a benefit, my dad is an English teacher-- which means I have been practicing my writing and grammar skills from a young age. Included with the many hours of writing practice, I have secured many skills that contribute to my writing ability.
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
I also began to look deeper into how my language and attitude can affect writers in their motivation and general perception of writing. For example, I became more aware of my privilege when learning about my writers’ upbringing in the education system. I quickly realized how fortunate I was to have such great English teachers in junior high and high school because they prepared me for college, unlike some of my
A memorable experience in my life when I first like reading and writing was I was in elementary school. When I was in fifth grade my teacher gave my class a creative writing assignment to do. The assignment could be about anything that we enjoyed whether it was fiction or non-fiction as long as we were able to follow the instructions and complete the assignment we were good as to getting a good grade. I remember trying to come up with different ideas and topics to write about that no one in my class would be able to even compare theirs to mine. So I began brainstorming different ideas that came to my mind.
Writing Is My Passion; An Autobiographical Essay Writing is something that I love to do, academic or not. I know that I have both strengths and weaknesses. Nonetheless, even with my love for writing, there are also things that I find to be difficult and frustrating. However, there is nothing that I would love to do more than write and improve on my writing for the rest of my life.
Everyone has their own unique style of writing, but it’s all based on what they have learned through their educational experiences. Some styles of writing are simple, some more complex. When I start to write a rough draft , first I start by reading over the topic and think up a basic outline in my head of what I’m going to write and how I’m going to go about writing it. Starting an essay is always a struggle for me because I’m not much of a writer and I just don’t want to do it, so starting is the hard part. After I got my thoughts together I start of by titling the essay and then for my first draft I pretty much bull shit everything and start typing whatever comes to my mind. In the first paragraph I make sure to state what I’m trying to prove or my argument, but u will also notice I ramble a lot because I type how I talk and I talk a lot. But when I’m writing I get distracted a lot, by just little things like social media, or just people trying to talk to me.
Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition.
