My work extends beyond the pen, pencil and pad. Teaching creates for me an intellectual nirvana- a place where a beaming five-year old inspires me as much as any writer ever would. In teaching free writing classes for homeless youth, I saw timid students grow into confident communicator. These kids, who had never taken formal writing lessons, stunned themselves with their own abilities to create sparkling diamonds and seas. While preparing for one of his college lectures, Dennis Baron, a professor and linguistics at the University of Illinois, began playing with the idea of how writing has changed the world we lived in and materials and tools we use in everyday life. This lecture slowly transitioned into “Should Everybody Write?” An article that has made many wonder if technology has made writing too easy for anyone to use or strengthens a writer's ability to learn and communicate their ideas. Baron uses rhetorical strategies in his article to portray to his audience his positive tone, the contrast and comparison of context and his logical purpose.
Language is a skill that, if used properly, can open up a variety of opportunities in life. Throughout the readings of “Homemade Education” by Malcolm X and “Living with Dyslexia” by Gareth Cook, we see many difficulties and challenges that people overcome when they are put in the face of language. Like many things, there are many different aspects that shape the way we understand the art of language. Throughout culture, perspective, and language we see all the components that make language so powerful. It is made very clear, that language has the power to promote the shaping of one’s identity.

My vision in my work with VOC this year is to explore the intersection of adult literacy and community development. Through research, I hope to learn more about the connection between research and practice in writing for adult learners; through working with a community based organization I hope to deepen my knowledge and understanding of the impact and challenges of working in a literacy program and how this translates into overall goals of improving livelihoods and building a stronger community. Throughout the semester, I have realized more potential for realizing my goals in my work and I have worked on different components of my vision.

I was never the one who wanted to volunteer. When I was in middle school, my parents always made me volunteer at places like schools and hospitals. I always went with the flow with my parents. I didn’t want to argue with them. As the hours of volunteering were stacking up, I began to notice something about the world around me. The environment that I volunteered in was an environment that if my family would live in it, my eyes would tear up. As a first time, English student in the university, I begin to understand what writing and literacy means. As I work halfway through out my semester, I have come to read and learn about different situations and meanings in many articles and books. Taking this course allowed me to understand and develop my writing process even further than I did before. As I read these articles, I notice certain aspects that these authors were trying to teach and inform us about. I shall demonstrate and identify what I have learned throughout this semester by creating points below.
Above all else, my determination is the quality value the most about myself. In my freshman and sophomore years of highschool, I was barely passing with "D" grades. I was in cyber school at the time and battling mental health issues. Once I recognized the problem, I enrolled in public high school and made up 16 credits within my last two years. This meant I had to drop a lunch period in order to take an additional class. My grades immediately raised to A's as I pushed my way into a future that would not have been possible without that change. After a semester at Moravian College, I have earned a 4.0. I am on the path of a Mathematics and Economics double major. My determination to complete my degree has helped me thrive through college and

In electing to participate in the Change Anything (2011) 30-day personal challenge, I contemplated which area of my life I would like to see improvement. After careful consideration, I decided to focus my attention on improving my relationship with my son. My relationship with my son has endured many challenges because of his daily struggle with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Diagnosed with the disorder at the age of seven, I have experience many obstacles with managing the symptoms of his disorder. These symptoms include difficulty focusing and trouble completing homework as well as chores and other task. In light of these challenges, the timing of this challenge ideal as I recently made the tough decision to leave my job in order to bring more balance to my personal life.
