My weaknesses before coming into English 101, was difficulty in constructing the thesis statement and my thoughts would be all over the place, there was no flow in the essay. This semester I’ve learned several things throughout English 101. I’ve learned different writing techniques, transition words, how to find resources online and using them effectively, and MLA formatting. I’ve learned these skills from class work and essays assignments. Although I still need more improvement, I’ve become a better writer because I’ve learned how to properly create a strong thesis statement, and making the essay flow with organized ideas by using outlines. However, I still have to improve on the following skills, word diction, grammar, and citations.
In the beginning of the semester, one of my major problems was constructing my thesis statement. A thesis is a short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay, research paper, etc., and is developed, supported, and explained in the text with examples and evidence. Without a well-developed thesis, your essay will be unorganized. I always had trouble choosing the main points of the essay. knew how to create one and how to gather the main points to discuss throughout the essay. I’ve improved on my thesis statement with class work on,\ how to write a well constructed thesis statement and with the continuous essays. However, The book “Successful College Writing” by Kathleen T. McWhorter also helped me since it had examples of the correct ways to write a thesis statement and where it belongs in an essay. In addition, with knowing how to build a proper thesis, it became easier to write my essay and to develop my ideas. English has never been my strong suit; it was a hassle to write essays. The only reason was that I couldn’t construct my thesis and organize my thoughts. After learning how to properly write a thesis, everything in my writing started to change. However, with each of my essays I would use an outline that also helped me organize my thoughts. Each outline had sections and it explained what I should be talking about. My writing began to make sense and it became well-organized. It took some time to get it right, but I finally did, and it became easier to write the essays. In my opinion, it all started to get better after I got the hang of writing the thesis statement. Before my ideas would be all over, the place and it would make no sense. Now, it is easier to understand and read my essays because my ideas are not all over the place. In this case, it is because I know what each paragraph has to be about because of the thesis. In this case, improving on my thesis helped me improve on my writing structure and how it all came together and flowed. Essays are never perfect, there’s always something someone can improve.
My weaknesses throughout this course have been word diction, grammar, and citations. They will continue to be my weakness until I master them. It’s not that I haven’t improved on them, because I have but I still consider those skills my major weaknesses because I haven’t mastered them yet. In the beginning of the semester, we had to take a test on My writing lab which showed us the skills that we needed to improve on. The program has helped me build up on my grammar skills. However, I am still getting the hang of how to construct a proper work cited, when using other people words. I plan to improve on all weaknesses so that my writing can become
enriched. Improving on writing a strong thesis statement, writing a well-organized essay is advancement because it will be easier for me to write essays. As much as I’ve improved in my writing throughout this semester in English 101, I still have more improvement to carry out. In addition, next semester is going to be harder but I’ve improved on skills that will make writing a bit easier.
One of the biggest weaknesses I have is not being able to transition from paragraphs effectively. In the Lord of the Flies and Asher Lev essays, I did not create a good flow through the essay, making it sort of choppy. I can improve this by increasing my knowledge of transition words and not expanding ideas too much. Also I have to work on slowing down my pace with writing and watch out for grammar mistakes. A way I could improve this is learning the placement of quotations in sentences, that they should be after a period in some cases. Another idea that I have to improve on is choosing the best evidence for my claim. In the Lord of the Flies essay, I had not chose the best evidences and it did not effectively show examples of the claim. Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. A working thesis statement should include a rough idea of your topic and the important point you want to make about that topic. Writing this statement at the top of a rough draft or outline and looking at it often can help you remain focused throughout the essay. However, the thesis statement that you begin with is not set in stone. If you find that your essay shifts topic slightly, you can change your thesis in later drafts so that it matches your new focus.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay.
Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
Before this class, I understood purpose was important; however, during this class I have discovered that putting more focus on purpose can result in a more interesting thesis and paper. As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
Entering college as a junior in High School has others expecting great things from you. But what I learned in my Highschool classes doesn’t amount to the expectations, grading, and teaching of college level courses. In my old High School English classes, expectations and grading were a lot less harsh. We did not have to cite information all but once or twice, and we primarily used much of our class time reviewing books, movies, and authors. All my English classes were more analytical than formal writing.
Your experiences are such an inspiration to many who struggle with the English level - especially on a collegiate level. I can only partly relate to your language application struggles. I spent this past summer in a city called Jiaxing, China - right outside of Shanghai.
A thesis statement makes the reader aware of the topics you will be discussing and your details to support them. Before developing my thesis, I found it easier for me to create a list of all my topics and reasons to support those topics with detail. From that list I was better able to create my thesis. A thesis allows you to create a nice flow to the paper by setting up the order of the chosen topics within the statement itself. For example; Music has influenced my life and America in many positive ways, for example; Music brings out individuality, can be useful in education, and creates appreciation for other cultures and diversity.
Hello! I’m super excited for this class because I find I usually really enjoy English-based classes. You might like to know that I’m a PSEO student here at Century. I go to an online high school called IQ Academy; I actually really enjoy and would definitely recommend it. I took a few classes here at Century College this past fall semester and I’m planning on coming back next fall.
The September sunshine beams down over my shoulders. The calm and cool breeze blew all around. My junior year of High School is going to be like my first day, so I thought. I perused my schedule; Biotech, Marketing, Pre-Calc, Chemistry, Economics, Elements of Fiction. Nothing caught my eye to be necessarily hard, but I was horribly wrong.
Throughout the semester I have had many ups and downs with my English abilities. I have been pushed to my limits in ways I will forever benefit from. All year I was nervous and dreading the course like I always do, as I am not very strong in English. However, after completing the course, and based off what I have learnt this semester, I don't think I'll ever get that nervous feeling again. Considering I went to a completely French elementary school, we rarely had English class.
