Personal Narrative: My Responsibilities For America

I am truly blessed to be an American. Anyone who is a citizen of this nation have many things to be thankful for. I am bestowed with freedoms that many people around the globe do not possess. However, it is easy to overlook that these freedoms were paid for with an unimaginable price and that I have my own duties to this great nation. My responsibilities for America is to make it a better place. This is accomplished by being an informed voter, to make sure that the generation after me have it better than I did, to defend the freedoms of the American people if called to service, to find ways to make it better instead of waiting for the government to just give me things, and to be an example in my community.
I hear all the time from my grandparents

about how much harder life was for them. They say that my generation has it so easy compared to when they were younger. When I was a kid I would foolishly complain about them always saying I have it so easy. What I didn’t realize then was that my generation has it so easy due to the previous generations having fulfilled their responsibilities. They were informed voters, they didn’t sit around waiting for free handouts, they found ways to improve the nation, some even paid for my generation to have it easy with their lives. I have the same obligation that the previous generation. I must make sure that the future generations can complain about me saying that they have it easier than I did. In everything I do I must have the interest of the upcoming generations in mind. This can be accomplished by doing something as simple as taking time from my day to vote for who I believe will best serve America.
The freedoms I enjoy today were by no means given to me for free. They are paid for by the brave men and women who put their lives out on the line for me every day. If called to join the ranks of these heroic men and women, I must be there to serve just as they do for me. Had previous generations ignored the call of duty, there would be no America left. If asked to serve, I must fight for those who cannot with all of my ability.
John F. Kennedy famously defined one of my biggest responsibilities to America when he said, “It’s not what your country can do for you, it’s what you can do for your country.” It is my job to make America a better place. I cannot bask in all of my freedoms waiting on the government to give me free handouts. Instead I must be proactive in finding things to better America. Imagine how much better America would be if everyone tried to find things to do for this nation
Finally, it is my duty to be an example in my community. When people think of a good American citizen, I should be the first person that comes to their minds. I need to be proactive in my community to make it a better place, and to encourage everyone in it to fulfill their responsibilities to America.
My responsibility for American is to make it a better place. I must secure an easier life for my children and grandchildren. If I am called upon to defend this nation, I must fight to the best of my ability. I must things to do for this country instead of waiting for free handouts. Finally, it is my duty to be the example that everyone in my community looks to.
