Personal Narrative: My Personal Challenges

In electing to participate in the Change Anything (2011) 30-day personal challenge, I contemplated which area of my life I would like to see improvement. After careful consideration, I decided to focus my attention on improving my relationship with my son. My relationship with my son has endured many challenges because of his daily struggle with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Diagnosed with the disorder at the age of seven, I have experience many obstacles with managing the symptoms of his disorder. These symptoms include difficulty focusing and trouble completing homework as well as chores and other task. In light of these challenges, the timing of this challenge ideal as I recently made the tough decision to leave my job in order to bring more balance to my personal life.
After reading Change Anything (2011), I sought to develop a change plan that utilized the strategies outline in the book. I initially started with strategy one, which is to “identify crucial moments” that create the greatest challenge for me achieving change (Patterson, Grenny, Maxfield, McMillan, & Switzler, 2011, p. 31). We are spending more time together and I am learning how to say no to individuals and activities that often pull me away from spending time with my son. Additionally, I have noticed that I am more patience with my son and make more of an effort to be less frustrated when I have to redirect him on multiple occasions to complete a specific task. Moreover, my son also acknowledged the fact that he noticed a difference and that I was making an effort to spend more time with him, which speaks volumes towards the progress we have made. Moving forward, it is my intent to continue using the change challenge form and the six sources of influence to continue support my change
