Prompt: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are? I stared at the vagrant, worn out man on the side of the corner and I couldn’t help but wonder what he was doing that Christmas holiday. I forever am known for my tender heart and compassion towards people I am unfamiliar with. Christmas 2014, I had the opportunity to help families in need. Helping these families celebrate a Christmas during their hardship, was one of my proudest accomplishments. From a young age, I always had compassion for the needy and the overlooked families. When I was assigned a community service project in my junior year, I wanted to do something personal, rather than just raising money for an organization. I incorporated my best qualities, compassion and determination, and provided less fortunate families with a Christmas. I worked harder than ever before to make sure these families had the most memorable holiday; this was no easy task. My first obstacle was searching for families to help. I contacted many homeless shelters, domestic violence, and rehabilitation centers and was informed that the families were confidential. I finally …show more content…
The first two families lived together in a small and barren house. The family consisted of a grandma, two single mothers, and five kids. The next family was led by a single mother who’s circumstances had led to quit her job to take care of her two sons, one suffering with a bipolar disorder, and forcing their home into foreclosure. The last family was anonymous. My community and church helped me raise $1,500 to buy each family presents and a Christmas dinner. I did not expect individuals to donate the myriad of decorations, money, and food I received. Home Depot took the liberty of donating three Christmas
Every year the Future Business Leaders of America group in my school organizes Thanksgiving baskets that are provided to families within the community who are in need and who otherwise would be without a Thanksgiving dinner. Serving as secretary of the club my junior and senior years I have had the honor of being directly involved with the making and handing out of the baskets. I organize the gathering of the goods and donations for the turkeys and gift cards that are provided within the baskets. These two years I have had the chance of personally handing the baskets to the families who are receiving them. When handing the out the baskets I see how thankful the families are for all of the hard work that I put into the baskets. The experience
It was the summer of 2013 when I was living with my grandparents and they told me about volunteering at the church. I didn’t know what they were talking about, so I took the initiative to go find out for myself that following Sunday. I was in the balcony on Sunday, when I heard the announcements saying we can volunteer for their hope food pantry. I was excited because it was going to be a chance where I can help other and get community service hours. Volunteering I began to think positive thoughts and telling myself “ I am doing a good deed”.
We’ve all heard the phrase “Charity begins at home.” This statement holds very true in my case, not because we needed help but rather because we were taught at an early age to provide help whenever possible. In our current economy there are many people not just in our community but throughout the world and beyond that are struggling. I was fortunate to grow up in a household with two loving parents who shared the importance of fundamental beliefs and values. Cynthia Street, the street I grew up on, was a comfortable middle class neighborhood that served as my first perspective of American life. Through my experiences in my neighborhood and also my interaction with my church family at Central Christian Church in Newark, I learned the importance of outreach work.
Jude’s hospital. When I was about 8 or 9 years old, my number one Christmas present was to donate to St. Jude’s hospital and that’s what I want to do every year from now on, I want to donate about 5,000 dollars to help benefit St. Jude’s research programs. I also want to make a lemonade stand so I can earn money for St. Jude’s hospital. Finally, I want to buy and give gifts to little kids who are not able to afford something that they really want for their birthdays or Christmas, my mom really inspired me to want to do this because she did something similar when she bought gifts for these three girls who wanted Christmas presents but were not able to afford many presents for themselves and their
Despite many obstacles in my life, my experience performing community service stands out as the most memorable. I was sixteen at the time, and just beginning my first job at a fast food restaurant. I had to learn how to balance between community service in the morning and my employment at the local Wendy’s. It was very stressful and influential at the same time.
In an effort to benefit the less fortunate families in my community, I helped lead a project known as the Angel Tree program. The program is designed to provide Christmas presents to children who would otherwise not receive gifts for the holidays. Acting through various school organizations, I helped
It was during Christmas time in New York when a plane landed at the airport with a special package. Many families anxiously waited for this moment since the day the packages left; they were absolutely ready to receive their packages again with open arms. Once they laid eyes on their special packages, tears of joy flowed and embraces quickly followed. These families have waited and finally saw their beloved relatives come back home from serving in the armed forces. Everything was perfect in the eyes of all the families at the airport.
I know many of you have seen the people outside places like Shop ‘n Save and Walmart asking for money, especially during the winter months. 2. It may not be much, but my mom always tries to donate a little bit when she sees them standing outside ringing their bells. She always tells me that “a little bit will eventually end up as a lot.”. 3.
We, Aimee Johnson and Jessie Virnig, along with Amy Wilson and Shawn Klimek, decided to try to give the homeless a little hope. The week before Christmas we went door to door and collected food for the local homeless shelter. We decided to focus on collecting food because around the Christmas season, a lot of emphasis is put on toy drives and people sometimes overlook the fact that the homeless still need to eat. In order to broaden our research, we decided to collect food from more than one group of people. We went to an average middle class neighborhood and to a college dormitory. Before we went out into the neighborhood and dorms, we prepared a thank you letter to give to everyone explaining to them who we were, to tell them that we were collecting food for the homeles...
I went to the grocery store and got cases of water, bags of bread, and stuff to make the sandwiches. I had finished preparing the bags and each had granola bars, fruit, ham and cheese sandwiches, water, toothpaste, and other hygiene products. My dad and I had arrived outside the homeless shelter and were ready to pass the bags out as we saw the swarm of people. Hundreds maybe even thousands of people gathered sitting in what little shade there was. I knew we had a homeless problem, but not to this extent and the bags I had made were going to make little to no difference on the vast amount of people that had been sitting outside. I was a little disappointed at first to be completely honest because I was not prepared for that many people. If I would have known there would have been so many people I would have made more bags. We drove around the block planning on what we were going to do and saw some tents set up. My dad and I were curious as to what they were, so we got out the car and saw that these people had been giving people food and I walked up to them and asked if there was any way I could help them. These people in the tents were actually an organization called Open Arms Outreach and a few girls scouts. They gladly let us help and we brought a few cases of water and the bags I had made and helped pass them out. The organization Open Arms Outreach
As I grew older, I have proved to many, most importantly to myself, how I can channel these traits into strengths and use them for meaningful pursuits. The first time that I actively used these traits for a remarkable purpose, was the summer before entering ninth grade. I worked at Camp Simcha, a camp for children battling life threatening illnesses. Upon returning from camp I was
Ever since I was little I’ve been what you would call a “high achieving” kid. I did well in school, I did well in sports and I did well in my community. I was always the first one to class, and the last one to leave the field. I was the kid that all my friends’ parents compared their children to. I was the kid with a room full of trophies and awards. In my mind, the worst possible thing I could do was disappoint the people around me. In elementary school I was involved in every club imaginable. I was in the band, I played in the orchestra, I sang solos for chorus, I was in the math club, I was president of student council, I played travel soccer, I was involved in every activity possible, and I excelled in all of them. This
The most joyous season of the year in our house is Christmas. All the family gets together, gifts are exchanged and we give thanks for all that we have. This Christmas however, was one that I will never forget. If it weren't for the help of a stranger coming to my rescue, my holidays would have been ruined. He reminded me that a little kindness really does go along way.
This year, I had the opportunity to give back to the community in many ways. I volunteered at Helping Hands, Meals on Wheels, and the county Science Museum. These volunteering experiences further opened my eyes to the needs of my community and the many opportunities to serve by volunteering.
I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
