For this assignment, I have selected my old Nintendo 64. It was purchased, I believe, back in 1999. Due to it being a game console, I’d say that the main use for it was to have fun with friends and family. At least that’s what I did with it back in my days a kid. I’d play games on it, from sun up to sun down. I have a lot of great memories playing it, just by myself and with my friends and family. It was the best way to spend a day, when you were a little kid in elementary school. The main usage of game consoles, as a medium, however, was to store a variety of data from different games and translate information digitally from one device to another, via controller to console, and console to the television screen. This means that the information the user gave the console allowed the television screen to give new information right back to the controller. That being said, I think I lean more on the “Individual” side, just a tad more. I think this is mostly because the user and the console interact directly with one another. There are no outside sources acting on the decisions that are made inside of the game or the console. Even the game’s settings have the ability to be changed by the person who’s controlling the game, itself. If the game consists of a story mode, then (most of the time) the user’s actions are predetermined so they can advance onto the next level or stage until the game’s completion. The game’s controller just has to follow through with the things the game asks of them to do. In the videogame industry there are many terms and processes. The latest term in class discussion was player agency and interaction. Now, from a general perspective the two terms seem similar but have different meanings in the field. In the following paragraphs allow me to explain what these terms mean and how they relate to the videogame industry.
In the console-gaming world people know Sony and Nintendo. Microsoft may be the largest and richest software company in the world, but it’s unknown when it comes to console gaming. Microsoft is counting on the Xbox to change that perception. Gamers may not be willing to take a chance with the Microsoft Xbox, even if it is far superior to any console ever made. Nintendo Gamecube is nothing if charismatic. Nintendo’s new machine is half the size of any other console and looks like a toy with its brightly colored plastic shell and handle. It’s destined to be home of such popular games as Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Kirby. Nintendo Gamecube seems mismatched as it goes up against the Microsoft Xbox and the Sony Playstation 2 (a multimedia mayhem that Sony says it’s supposed to be “The Future Of Entertainment”). The first Select game I ever played we were down 11-8. It was the bottom of the 6th inning, I had just walked and was on first base. There were no outs. I could smell the fresh cut wet grass of San Antonio Texas. I get the signal for a hit and run. The next batter is up, hits a streaming ground ball past the shortstop and through the left field gap and to the wall. I ran, rounding the bag heading to third. I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
