New Beginnings Like so many before me, my nursing school journey has been filled with amazing experiences, but also many challenges. Each part of my education whether good or bad has shaped the nurse I’ am today and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. My Nursing School Journey I began my education in August of 2016 at Okanagan College in Vernon, BC. I remember on the first day of class sitting down and noticing how quiet the room was. Right from day one, the workload was like nothing I’d experienced before. When the teachers say you’ll need to spend a minimum of three hours each day after class studying, they aren’t kidding. I usually spent longer than that each night and basically all of Sunday. I lived, breathed and slept homework. However, despite my efforts, near the end …show more content…
Listening for me comes naturally, but it’s both a positive and negative attribute. Most people think I have nothing to say, because I’ am so quiet and this also comes off as me being non-assertive and lacking in confidence. While “even silence is a form of non-verbal communication,” I still have a voice to be heard (Belcher, 2014, p. 63). I have no trouble advocating for patients and you can be sure that whatever I have to say has been well thought out beforehand. I have never thought of myself as a leader, however when the need arises I have no trouble stepping in to get the job done. During this last clinical, I have enjoyed being given the freedom and trust to take charge of a Kardex and organize my own plans of care. I found the medical floor of the hospital a more “comfortable” place to be. But on the surgical floor, most of my nursing skills could be utilized and with the higher acuity of patients came a higher level of care. I’ve discovered I enjoy the busyness and challenges of these higher acuity settings with their constant changes. Areas I Need to Improve

My extracurricular and academic activities have helped mold me into a person with character and good qualities. These qualities--respect, humility, kindness, ambition, appreciation for diversity and collaboration, and courage--have not come without valuable failures and lessons. I can continue to develop these qualities and build upon these lessons as I go forward with my university goals and the desire I have to enter the healthcare profession as a nurse. I am able to look beyond the exciting, glamorous parts of both and see that there will be lots of hard work and difficulty. I am ready to face those challenges and do my best and give my all.
When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. But our instructors encouraged us and pushed us to keep going, and for that we are grateful because we all made a decision to stick with it, and here we are today. It seems unimaginable that just a year ago this journey was just beginning, but here we are today a year later,
at the orphanage, I was able to help build a sidewalk and a garage for
It has been over one year since I have started the accelerated nursing program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. When I first started the program in fall 2014, I have no idea what nursing was like. Although I had my bachelor from another institution, everything I learned was very different compared to the information I have learned in School of Nursing. Nursing school has slowly transformed me into a graduate professional nurse based on the professional development that I have completed along the way.
Every single encounter I had, including those with my peers and facilitators have left me a better nurse and person than when I arrived. It truly has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of this experience as it motivates me to seek out new experience and research to facilitate my continued growth both personally and as a nurse partaking in the process of my cleints’ “becomings”. Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience thus far including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and related values, and my visions for the future.
My interest in nursing first stemed when my grandfather was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. Hospice had come into their home, and I was amazed at how they coped with their job. The people who took care of the person I loved the most, were compassionate and caring. Most of all they helped all of us through a time of need. During that time I realized helping people in whatever way I could in the medical field, was the career for me. My grandmother was also a nurse. She would tell me stories of when she worked in different hospitals. When I heard all of her experiences, I wanted to make memories of my own in the nursing field. This past summer, I took a CNA course at Valley Falls/Holton, Kansas. When I enrolled in this course, I thought
I started my Nursing career in India and then I came to the United States and became an RN. I entered Nursing with the thinking that Nursing is a profession that will always allow me to have a job and all my patients will get better. However, from my experiences I understood that Nursing is more than just giving medications, and it requires clinical competence, cultural sensitivity, ethics, caring for others, and life-long learning about others and the evolving field of medicine. Florence Nightingale once said:
For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. In the interview you will see the perspective of Emily’s endeavors after college and insight for future nurses or nursing students.
Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way. All the experiences I have had during the ten weeks of my student years have helped me in shaping me into a professional.
Being a nursing student help me learn and understand each and every individual physically and emotionally. Though, being a nurse is not my choice but being here for these past few years help me accept the path that I am taking to. Before I entered college I have definite course to take so I let my parents decide on what course I am going to take. And of course an only child and being a good daughter I was I accepted it. Because it is not what I truly want and desire it is really hard for me. Remembering those times during my 1st year when there are many theorist and theory we need to know and to think that I’m not good at remembering names of people whom I just met in daily lives, then during our anatomy where in you
Whether we realize it or not we grow everyday physically and mentally. Even on our worst days we grow to be better people because the challenges just make us stronger. But, all challenges are different for everyone, for instance; a soccer player's biggest setback might be having an injured leg, whereas a pediatric nurse's biggest setback is losing a life. In light of that fact, with every setback comes a lesson it is up to you to choose what you take from it. In nursing you learn lessons everyday in everything you do from saving a life, to curing a sickness, ending with impacting the lives of
Many people say that college is the greatest and worst time of your life. Yes, you experience the great times such as partying, and meeting new people. But let’s not forget about the worst times like crying your eyes out because you are afraid if your next test and even having six assignments all due at midnight. Although I look to have moments such as these, I also have to remember the real reason why I decided to attend college. That which is to pursue my dreams of becoming a nurse. Throughout these four years, maybe even more, I plan to do just that and along the way my goal is to also gain more skills and enhance my knowledge about being a nurse.
