My mentor has done his best to give me the guidance and direction needed for my project to be successful, despite his busy schedule and the multiple tasks that he has to get done. He also tries his best to fit time to work with me in challenging areas of the project. My mentor has always done an exceptional job giving me recognition and positive feedback on tasks that I have performed well. It is necessary to accept criticism willingly and accept recommendations for improvement graciously. When entering high school I felt pressure to be good at everything I do. Since freshman year it has become apparent that math does not come easy to me. When my guidance counselor recommended icare tutoring, I felt as though I was not good enough because I was not naturally good at it. I thought needing extra help meant I was not as smart as everyone else until I became aware of the fact that I just needed to practice more. After realizing that the icare tutoring sessions were there to help me and not to hurt me, I took advantage of it and realized it is okay. I have now been in it for three years and have seen a sufficient amount of improvement in my math skills. This is important for every high school student to realize, as fear of failure is very common amongst myself and my peers. In my junior year, I learned the same lesson again when I joined the BOCES program for Clinical Medical Assisting. On the first day, my teacher made it clear that the course would be rigorous but I knew to not doubt myself. We began to learn new skills such as taking vital signs, capillary punctures and phlebotomy. It was comforting to know that this was new to everyone. Coaching and mentoring sessions are guided with theoretical models, which help focus both the coach and the coachee in attaining desired outcomes for problem situations. However, even with the aid of theoretical models not everyone can coach another person. The first and far most important attribute of a coach is the ability to build relationships with the coachee in that the coachee feels safe and trusting towards the coach, without the capability to interact with the client there may be a lack of progress or motivation. There are many things that have molded me into the person I am today such as being born into a family with four children. With three siblings, I have been forced to be able to work out problems from stealing each other’s toys to having to rush to the emergency room to get stiches because my brother chased me around the house and I tripped. When I was in middle school and through high school a mentor I had was an older man in my community. From this relationship I had someone who was concerned with what I was doing in school, and within the community. I also got the opportunity to learn different skills from him such as woodworking, landscaping, and the chance to further develop my communication skills. These experiences may seem like nothing, but from them I have learned that taking my time helps me produce my best work possible. For example, instead of jumping right into the problem I should start by effectively making sure those I was teaching knew the basic fundamentals because if you don’t know the why of from previous lessons your understanding capacity structure will be unstable to begin with and as you progress this building, as more and more layers pile on, will collapse reaching a stagnant point with nowhere to truly go because the gaps and support for the base was apparent and not there respectively. Throughout this timeline my confidence increase as I felt somewhat successful because my teams and sections were starting to understand as I took no approaches and grew into the prominent leader position my mentor helped groom me for. This became a practical means of learning to being more literate. It was repetitive some days as I failed to come up with a way for them to retain the knowledge I gave them the previous day making progress slow the first year I truly explored this role and took to some of the advice my mentor continued to feed me. Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. There is a point in everyone’s life when they step back and realize “I can’t do this anymore, it’s ruining my life”. Many of my friends have started smoking cigarettes while drinking at a very young age, and continue to use this drug currently and don’t realize the affect it has on their future. While I have been smart enough to avoid smoking, I haven’t been as wise at making decisions when it comes to drinking. The amount of partying I’ve done in college has taken over my life, and has had a huge impact on my grades. Changing my drinking habits and continuing to avoid cigarettes will enable me to be the best I can be for the rest of my college experience.
