Personal Narrative: My Life Changing Experience

It had been a fairly good week. I received an A on another one of Mr. Jackson’s exams, and completed another week of eighth grade basketball ‘practice’, which in my case consisted of standing against the wall watching the starters run the plays. It was only my first year playing, so I was just enjoying being on the team with my friends. But that weekend was to be unlike most others in my past. I was attending my aunt’s wedding downtown. I was to watch my aunt, who I had known my whole life, and her boyfriend, who I had known for about 3 years, commit to each other the rest of their lives before the audience of people they knew the best. My knowledge extended to what I had seen from my parents, my friends and teachers at school, and my extended family. In my mind, marriage was indefinite. When two people got married, they stayed together their whole lives. The few marriages I was aware of followed my thought process, so I had no reason to think any different. So when I attended the wedding in 2004, I thought it was a much bigger experience. I thought the wedding was a wonderful time. I had the chance to see and spend time with my cousins, and all my family members that live out of town. My thought process was for an event that was so big there must be many people, to witness the significance. However, 8 years later I had a very different understanding of marriage at my other Aunt’s wedding. I was now 13 and had quite a few years to figure out how marriage works in our day and age.
