Later that day a lady came storming into the room shouting, “they are ready for you guys!” I was in my last bits of energy and falling asleep. The last thing I remember was leaving that nasty, smelly room and getting on a truck. From there everything else is history, we crossed the border without being caught and met up with one of my aunts, in Arizona. Then, traveling to Oregon in where we would start our new lives. The ride from Arizona to Oregon was fascinating and it all seemed out of this world to me, there were buildings, cars and trees, all in which I had never seen before in my life back in Mexico. It all seemed too good to be true, was I in a dream. The most thrilled I had was when I saw my old man waiting for us at the door of our
new apartment telling us a new beginning started that day forward. It was our first day in Oregon, we had nothing other than a few venerable blankets we had brought with us from Mexico. That night we slapped on the floor, and for the first time since the start of the journey I had no worries. My family and I were reunited and there was nothing to worry about, not as long as I was with them. Fast forwarded ten years later, I am back in my small town that I grew up in, with no fears and knowing that I will be able to go any time I would like, having become a U.S. resident.
El Paso, Texas is a relatively large city with a small town attitude. It is one of those cities that grows on you. I embrace the laid back lifestyle and bi-cultural environment - it’s given me an opportunity to develop a unique bicultural identity that influences my motivation to succeed. Especially, being the daughter of an immigrant that upholds Mexican culture. The majority of the population is hispanic, which gave me the sense of mexican traditions that I would share with my family in Mexico. Growing up bilingual ironically provided me comfort in the community. Also, the efforts of the community are being made to modernize and improve the city.
While going through the state of Oklahoma it was not so bad, however, going through Texas was going to take forever. Taking an airplane was going to cost too much money so instead we traveled in a car. I look out of the car window and watched the sun go down, I began to fall asleep. I open my eyes and see bright lights. It was the border of Mexico. I look around seeing a great amount of cars and buses full of people who are eagerly wanting to be with their families in Mexico. After waiting in a
I wonder if I should I start calling Las Vegas, Nevada home now. I’ve traveled back and forth from California to Las Vegas since I was a child. I can remember at the age of thirteen my family and I would take family weekend trips very often. By the age of seventeen I was forced to move to Vegas for 6 months right before my senior year of high school started. Since it was my last year of high school my parents decided to let me go back to California for the last three months and graduate with my friends. Since I wasn’t eighteen yet, I forced to go back to Las Vegas right the day after graduation.
One day, my parents talked to my brothers and me about moving to United States. The idea upset me, and I started to think about my life in Mexico. Everything I knew—my friends, family, and school for the past twenty years—was going to change. My father left first to find a decent job, an apartment. It was a great idea because when we arrived to the United States, we didn’t have problems.
I was so close to my Mexican culture that when I was actually exposed to the American culture it was like I was from a foreign place. When I started to get used to the American culture and started becoming an “American” I was sent to Mexico to a Mexican rodeo camp. There I was with people that had the complete different ideals than what I was just getting used to. I went through the exact same thing that I had went through in America. I was found in this big mix-up.
Every person has an American Dream they want to pursue, achieve and live. Many people write down goals for themselves in order to get to their dream. Those never ending goals can range from academic to personal. As of today, I am living my dream. My American Dream is to become a nurse, travel to many places, have a family, and get more involved with God.
Have you ever been to Texas? I have been once. My trip to Texas was unbelievably awesome. I saw many of things on my way there. While we were there, I had loads of fun. Many things happened while we were there. Texas was the coolest place I have ever been.
The Grand Canyon, it’s truly is grand. The animals, the plant life, and the canyon’s history is something my father and I have been interested in for a long time. My dad, Erik, shows me plant specimens and fossils of animals i’ve never seen before. He once told me there was a type of vulture that are so close to extinction there are only 20 left alive in the world. We visited Arizona to see the Grand Canyon once dad got enough money to go on a roadtrip. I’m so excited to see my friends there, too. I brought so much snacks, maybe too much, and my backpack is kind of heavy for the hiking trip, but I’ll live through it.
Aspen, Colorado, the town I grew up in. The town where I first learned to speak, swim and do many other things. Life in Aspen is perfect. Skiing on the powdered slopes during the winter, hiking grueling mountains during the summer and exploring it’s majestic beauty any season. Aspen’s captivating beauty is also filled with fond memories everywhere that take me back to my childhood: seeing mom bears desperately reaching for the tart crabapples to feed their young, playing volleyball with my brother on the scorching sand, and getting frustrated because I could never hit the ball with enough force to make it over the net, watching the crystallized ice charging to take over the last bit of green left. I had it, the mountains, the snow, the house, I had it all. Although in the summer of 2012 everything changed.
dollars for his help. Many of us, mostly all young men, were driven in a van out into the desert. We carried a couple bottles of water and a few other things in our bags. We started walking. We walked and walked, following a man who said he knew where we were going. We walked all day and into the night. I finished my water, and I was very thirsty and weak. The man told us that we were crossing into America now, and we would be safe soon. Just when we started to believe we would make it, we heard the noise of a helicopter. Soon, we were flooded with light from above. The helicopter landed, and we were surrounded by men in uniforms, all speaking English very quickly. They gave us some water, and after an hour or two, they loaded us onto a bus that had come to take us away. It was horrible. They took us right back to Mexico and dropped us across the border. I don 't give up easily, though. After a few days of rest, I tried again. This time I made it and here I am! (qtd. in Limón)
We got off from plane and headed towards the exit. My cousins and my family case worker were already their waiting for us. I was so shocked and the same time I was so happy to meet with my cousins after 6 years. This days too when I went to airport reminds me of that day. We collect bags and headed towards my cousin’s house, I was so hungry and I asked my cousin “what kind of food you made” she knew that we love Nepali cosine so she had made Nepali cosine. We ate food after that I went upstairs to rest. I was so excited and little bit scared to be here and start my new life in USA because I knew that USA life is different than Nepalese life style, however that day was my best day ever in my life. I felt like my dream came true. I had a lot of things going through my mind. Like what am I going to do, what is best for me things like
Beginning of summer 2013, my family; which includes my mother, aunt, little brother, and myself, decided to take a trip to Texas. During our little vacation we went to Dallas and met the people off of Gas Monkey Garage, the TV show, and got pictures with them as well, they all smelled fantastic, like fancy cologne. Also we stopped at a mall in Dallas where they have a ice skating rink! I’m pretty sure we need malls with ice skating rinks in Utah! Anyways we ended up leaving with 6 pairs of flip flops from a little shop that reminded me of Hawaii. We went to Galveston Texas and rode a four person bicycle on the street next to the ocean, also in Galveston I learned how to catch little crabs with a net and a piece of bacon, we went to an amusement park on a pier; not just for rainbow flavored dippin’ dots, but also for the insane roller coasters that go over the ocean. While in Texas I learned many
Summer 2014 I visited a beach in Mexico, with me three relatives Brenda, Jesus , and Karla. The water was crystal blue, not like any other beach i've seen before. Brenda had chocolate brown hair that was clutched in one long braid and Jesus had mysterious dark brown eyes. Karla had light caramel hair that was let loose, every time the wind blew it was as if her hair grew a set of wings and flew with the breeze.
A week before my birthday I asked my mom if we can go to Circus Circus and she said yes. I was turning seven years old. On December 28,2009 we took a road trip to Las Vegas,Nevada. My mom rented a hotel for 3 days right next to Circus Circus. We chilled at the hotel and visited places but on the 30th of December at 9:30 we went to Circus Circus.
Mom and dad where packing up the vehicle. My brothers look like walking zombies as they got up on the van. I couldn 't stop smiling of joy. As we all got in the vehicle to settle in I yell out " Goodbye California, Hello Mexico!!". My parents where not playing when they said it was going to be a long trip, took us at least four days and 3 nights. I just recall that because I slept most of the time. I heard my father say " estamos aqui Gorda ", other words " we here fatty", don 't get my father wrong fatty was a nickname for me since a baby I belive. Hey what can I say I was a pretty chubby kid, but that 's other story.I started to look out the window all ready can see different life style even the air smell different too.I was known to ask many questions as a kid , hey I still do.
