The past week has opened my mind up toward interpreting texts and by realizing that there is much to be said about a picture than meets the eye. I observed many kinds of texts throughout the week, books, audio, video, and articles from the newspaper. Over the weekend I had the chance to be at both ends of the text and thought it would be most appropriate to share my experience. Often times the message of an article gets muddled to the reader depending on the stylistic manner of the author’s writing. The style in which the author uses to write, Am I Still Here?, takes away from the actual message of the article. The author, Anthony Doerr(‘)s, uses very descriptive language which is distracting to the reader. Also, the use of metaphors can deem challenging for the reader to understand the true meaning behind the article. Finally, the use of complicated diction makes it arduous to understand what the article is attempting to get across. The stylistic choices that the author uses takes away from the message of the article.

When inditing, authors incline to tell their own personal story through their literature work, sometimes done unknowingly or deliberately. Albeit some components of the author’s work are fabricated and do not connect with their own personal lives whatsoever, this is sometimes what causes a reader to do their own research about the author and their background of the story. Over the years, writing has been used as an art form, allowing people to write their thoughts. Though, the most torrential puzzle of writing is the reasoning behind the words on a page. The logic behind any piece of literature falls into categories of wants and needs. There are three essays to which these categories are explained in further detail with more depth. Firstly, “Not So Deadly Sin” which focuses on the act of lying and exaggeration.
Last but not least, O’Connor confirms that even a short story is a multi-layer compound that on the surface may deter even the most enthusiastic reader, but when handled with more care, it conveys universal truths by means of straightforward or violent situations. She herself wished her message to appeal to the readers who, if careful enough, “(…)will come to see it as something more than an account of a family murdered on the way to Florida.”
By reading a short story, you learn valuable messages that you can use in life. The three short stories share a common theme of the mystery of other minds. In “A & P,” the protagonist Sammy used very sexist language when he says, “With the straps pushed off, there was nothing between the top of the suit and the top of her head except just her, this clean bare plane of the top of her chest down from the shoulder bones like a dented sheet of metal tilted in the light” (Updike 561). In addition to the sexist comments, when Sammy calls women sheep and witches readers are puzzled because they cannot believe why he would say these comments about women. In “A Rose for Emily,” Tobe never goes to the authorities and tells them about Emily, but instead, “He walked right through the house and out the back and was not seen again” (Faulkner 96). Readers suspect that Tobe has mental issues because they question how someone in their right mind would not tell the authorities there is a dead body in Emily’s house. In “Hills Like White Elephants,” Jig thinks about getting an abortion when she says, “And I’ll do it and then everything will be fine” (Hemingway 1). Some readers question how someone in their right mind would ever consider getting an abortion.
Before I wrote this essay, I read it silently, until I sat down and read it out loud to myself; did I fully understand some of the subtle meanings behind the words; before they were just meaningless letters arranged into meaningless words. James Agee and Walker Evans truly, deep in their hearts, have a new earned respect and understanding for these people, and really hope for the best for their future.
The text exhibits tragic, depressing, and disturbing diction and it impacts the reader because it makes them feel sympathetic
Personal narratives allow you to share your life with others and vicariously experience the things that happen around you. Your job as a writer is to put the reader in the midst of the action letting him or her live through an experience. Although a great deal of writing has a thesis, stories are different. A good story creates a dramatic effect, makes us laugh, gives us pleasurable fright, and/or gets us on the edge of our seats. A story has done its job if we can say, "Yes, that captures what living with my father feels like," or "Yes, that’s what being cut from the football team felt like."
How does an artist create a painting? He or she cannot simply look at a canvas and a picture appear. The artist must be equipped with proper tools to create a masterpiece: paint and brushes. The same can be said about writers. Writers are not born with the knowledge of writing an attractive paper. They must be given tools of writing and shown how to utilize them. Artists and writers without proper tools will be nothing more than blank canvases and empty pages. I used to be a blank canvas, but a teacher gave me the tools I needed, and now I am a polished portrait.
Although many will argue that great writing will require time and practice, opponents claim that great writing is like a puzzle which means one can put the pieces together to create an astonishing puzzle. This was the case when I was a 10th grade. As a tyro, I didn’t know much about writing elements and styles. Fortunately, one of my English teachers, Mrs. Roberson, change my outlook on writing. She taught me countless techniques. From that point, I started reading books to increase my knowledge and vocabulary. This was an incredibly wondrous experience for me. I was learning new information while expanding my learning capacity. This was stupendous. It was a life-changing moment for me. Throughout my high school journey,
“Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go” (BrainyQuote). It is shown in this quote that when you begin writing you know nothing, you have to learn and develop a writing style as you write more, it takes time to become a good writer. Throughout my many years of writing, my writing styles have changed greatly. In middle school I had never written an essay based on a book. This year I have gone from being utterly confused on how to write an essay about a book, to having a full understanding of what I’m writing. This year is the year that I have grown more than any other, all because of my teacher, Mrs. Johnson. She has helped me become the best writer I can be this year. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t say that I am one who enjoys writing as a hobby it definitely doesn’t bore me I just enjoy using my imagination while I read therefore if I am writing it would be on a specific topic or certain subject. I preferred to research my topic in-depth so that I may have a full understanding of what I will be writing about, I will be researching and thinking about both my side and if one exists the opposing sides views or arguments. I will then start to write any and all of my ideas and thoughts down, this is usually just a long free write so I usually use 2-3 sheets of paper during this step writing down anything that I want to say about the topic as well as any reliable sources I can refer to. Once I am completely satisfied with all that I have written down I will transfer it over to my computer where I will continue to add to my writing sample as I go this is where I start to
When I began middle school I did not enjoy writing. I thought that it was a waste of time, but now I realize that it is a good method of getting my ideas and points across. Now, I enjoy writing and my writing has improved. I think I am good at writing research papers and papers about true stories and events. I could improve on writing fictional stories where I have to come up with my own stories and ideas. Now that my middle school career is coming to a close I look back on my analysis, argument, and narrative essays from the year.
I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
