Prior to birth, my mother and my siblings were living in north Nashville. Their interest in music was between R&B and 90s rap. The rap music kind of discussed growing up in a rough neighborhood and it was easily relatable for them because that neighborhood was not the best. My mother was working multiple jobs to take care of her then three kids. As a single mother, music was sort of an outlet that expressed the emotions she was feeling. When she finished her exhaustingly long day she would enjoy listening to some soothing R&B. Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, and SWV were a few of her favorite artists. The first songs that I am able to recall from my early childhood are gospel songs that I heard at church. Although I do not remember the words to the songs I can remember hearing …show more content…
I based what I liked off of what my family listened to. R&B music became a part of my everyday life. My favorite artist was Aaliyah because of her unique style. When she died I could not fully understand what had happened or how it would affect me. It was my first time ever experiencing death. The last video she released was Rock the Boat and I clearly remember dancing to it a few times a day for a while. My mom tried to explain why I would never hear any music, but I still could not fully grasp the concept of death. Jumping forward to age twelve, I was in the beginning stages of developing the genres of music I actually picked on my own. As many preteens my age I had Bieber fever. Justin Bieber’s hit One Time was the song to shape my musical future, and it sounds kind of odd saying it now. The lyrics, the beat, and the melody all came together and it was like a light flipped in my head. I became a super fan pretty much overnight, and it kind of took my family by surprise because they were not use to that genre of music. I had posters all over my room of him, and my older sister hated it because we shared a
Music has played an important part in my life. My love for music comes from my dad. Growing up I remember him having a room full of CDs and instruments that he played daily. The songs varied in genres and the instruments ranged from pianos, violins to drums. I grew up loving almost every style of music so, it is very difficult for me to dislike a song unless, it is vulgar or “dark”.
In Jenée Desmond-Harris’s narrative Tupac and My Non-thug Life, the author’s use of a photograph aids the reader in conveying what Desmond-Harris and her friend Thea were like. The photograph captures the natural essence and innocence of the young high-school girls as they enter an age of self-discovery. The purpose of the photo is to bring the descriptive details of the narrative to life and provide a vivid image of the girls during their adolescent years. The photograph reflects a youthful and rather naive time the girls find themselves surrounded in.
Growing up I remember my mom turning the music up whenever she heard a good song. The only genre, she listened to was country so I grew up loving country music. I now turn the music up whenever I hear a song Luke Bryan wrote because his music is so good. Growing up Luke Bryan was a normal child, but over the 20 or more years, so many devastating things have happened to his family that are hard for Bryan and his family to get over.
Attention Getter: When I was 12, my father bought many albums of American music and played them on car, and it was the first time I got to know different types of American music. I liked rock by Bon Jovi, and pop by Whitney Houston, but the one I loved the most was a lively and lovely music, the country music.
Rap music has given me personally something to look up to. Not a role model but hope of continuing my dreams because rappers successfully made it. “For what’s money without happiness, or hard times without the people you love” is from a song called “Love Yourz” by J. Cole. He clearly understands how there is “beauty in the struggle and ugliness in the success” because he’s lived that life. Other songs such as “2Face” or “The Autograph” were instantly relatable to me because he has been through several struggles from the beginning of his childhood. Cole’s father left when he was six leaving his mother and younger brother alone. Cole became “the man of the house” but becoming a rapper is not as easy as it seems. Cole’s messages in these two songs are relative because I too, have had several issues with my mother and father creating a sense of lonesome. Hearing music like Coles helped me overcome my
No one hates music. If there is one, he must be a liar. Most people listen to the music. Music can represent the joy of love and also describe the sorrow of farewell. When people want to get rid of some stress, they shout and sing along with their favorite songs. Now music and life are bound up with each other, enough to be called an inextricable connection. Music has been developed by following the human society, and its developmental steps are very similar to the growth of ideology. For example, one concept became a major of society, and then other concept tried to be against the major. In other words, music has many different genres because of the number of major influences such as the Great Depression and technological advances. African-American
Music is a large consumption of my daily life and the artists I listen to have shaped me in some way. Listening to music is one of my most time
Hip-Hop/Rap is one of the biggest growing genres of today. From its early stages in the 1970’s to today’s pop culture, it has grown quite a lot. Unfortunately, it has developed a terrible reputation of drugs, violence, abuse, and gangs. When people associate Hip-Hop with things it is usually a negative image that comes to the person’s mind. Which is sad, Hip-Hop/Rap has a great artistic quality to them that gets so easily overlooked. There is true poetry and emotion behind these lyrics and beats, but not everyone is willing to sit down and listen to it. They quickly judge this music genre and the immediately dislike it without giving it a second thought. Rappers pour their emotions and their souls into their songs and it really speaks to people who would stop and listen to them. Hip-Hop/Rap has evolved over time. From the early stages of Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and others to today’s rap stars like Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. Each decades style is different but each style is still good. What really made Rap huge was the Sugarhill Gang’s own song called “Rapper’s Delight” the entire song is around 15 minutes long with just three emcee’s rapping, Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank, and Master G. An emcee is another word for a rapper. Most emcees are the head of whatever event is being taken place, kind of like people that do skits in a talent show to introduce the next act. Hip-Hop/Rap today is filled with emcees and rappers. Today we find a more complex and more diverse style than what we would find back in the 70’s. There are different styles to different rappers. Each one unique in its own way and it makes that rapper stand out compared to everybody else. Also, another thing today that is different from the past is the flow of a rapp...
Music is very important for Black Americans as it has always been a form of expression that may have otherwise not been available. First, the African slaves brought the drums from Africa and to make a long story short, we still feel the beat! Hip- Hop, Pop, Rock, Jazz, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Rap, soca, dance hall and many, many more genres of music derived from the influence directly or indirectly from the complex beat(s) of the African drum. The dances related to hip hop and rap are also rooted in African
Eminem had a miserable childhood which he learned to thrive in and succeed to what he has become now. Marshall was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on October 17, 1972. He was the child of Bruce Mathers, Jr. and Deborah Nelson. Soon after Marshall’s birth his father left to California. His mother struggled to maintain a household, for which the result was frequent movement from Michigan and Missouri. The family then settled in Warren, Michigan in an African American middle-class neighborhood. The family was the only Caucasian tenants through the region. Marshall was a tall, scrawny, and white male that stood out amongst his peers, of African Americans, and was constantly bullied for his color. In addition his mother was an abusive drug addict who took prescription pills. Eminem then inclined to the interest of hip-hop listening to his first rap song at nine—"Reckless" featuring Ice-T. Later in his life he suffered family loss, like his Uncle Ronnie who committed suicide. Mathers became mute and antisocial for weeks. In high school he dropped out for repeating ninth-grade for his third time, for poor grades, and pursued lyrical writing. Marshall then joined rap groups and freestyles gaining success in the predominantly black industry. He then adapted to the name “M&M” as his rapper name, which later evolved to “Eminem”. Eminem’s adversities affected many of his works throughout his life and career. After his album Infiniti, Eminem was signed into Aftermath Records by Dr. Dre and started to produce albums of masterpiece.
Music is one of the most fantastical forms of entertainment. Its history stretches all the way from the primitive polyrhythmic drums in Africa to our modern day pop music we listen to on our phones. It has the ability to amaze us, to capture our attention and leave us in awe. It soothes the hearts of billions, and it is so deeply rooted in my life that it has touched my heart as well. Everyday I walk to the beat of the song stuck in my head and hum along to the melody. For me, to listen to music be lifted into the air by the hands of your imagination and float around for a while. You forget about your worries, your troubles and find peace within the sound. Every chapter in my life is attached with a song. Every time I listen to a certain song, thoughts of my past come flooding back
Not every person is going to have the same taste in music, but why is it that people find a certain genre more appealing than others? A person’s personality and individuality clearly has a large role Research indicates that there is a definite correlation between personality and music preferences (Rentfrow & Gosling p. 1236-1237, Chamorro-Premuzic & Furnham p. 180-183). Those that enthusiastically chose to involve music in their lives will be more open to whatever music findings they come across in their everyday lives. There are also individuals who can play one or more musical instrument(s) and would be considered music lovers. Most of them have started from a young age and as they grew older would spend huge amounts of...

I can’t specifically say how old I was when I first heard music, but what I can remember is growing up with Latin music. My parents are from Guanajuato, Mexico so there’s no surprise I’d hear the music they grew up listening to. It’s not just songs either, even now I can recall the lullabies my mom would sing to me. As I started growing up I became more open to different genres of music and figuring out which ones I preferred over others.
Though every teen and family is different, music still effects the overall view and relationship with the family. Teens who tend to lean toward rap or heavy mental music tend to be more rebellious, especially when it comes to authority. This music can lead to teens defying their parents more often. (Bogt, T. F., Keijsers, L., & Meeus, W. H) Adolescents who listen to pop or radio music tend to be more timid, and are not as likely to rebel or turn to substance abuse compared to
