Growing up in Spokane Indian Reservation was filled with no hope or dreams. I was born with too much cerebral spinal fluid inside my brain, which gives me seizures. Living on the reservation was a difficult time because of poverty dealing with a poor family and a drunk father. Most of the time I got bullied, I got called names like "Orbit" because of my big head. My inspiration is to draw cartoon, the only way to escape the reservation. I draw because words are unpredictable. I draw because words are too limited. In the reservation, I only had Rowdy as my best friend. My geometry teacher Mr P. inspired me to take action to look for hope far away from the reservation. Transferring to Reardan High School, was a new beginning to find
hope. On the first day at my new school, At my new school, I was called Arnold, not Junior. Penelope (expresses his love for her) Back at the reservation, people know me as a traitor. The students at Rearden disliked me and also, teachers. I joined the basketball team and slowly, I became a basketball star. I become friends with Gordy and Penelope. I realized that I belonged to multi- tribal groups.
As Din4 people (Navajo people) our community is known as “The home Chief Manuelito’s Wife”. Chief Manuelito was a head Dine chief during the Long Walk period in 1864. In the year of 1868 Manuelito and other leaders signed a treaty act to end the period of imprisonment. Also, during this time the Navajo reservations were established. Tohatchi was one of the many communities that were established on the Navajo reservation. The Navajo reservation spreads across New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. The Navajo Nation is known for being the largest tribe (Discovernavajo 2015). Tohatchi is located in McKinley County.
The Coeur d'Alene Tribe is located in the upper panhandle of Idaho, approximately 15 miles south of the city of Coeur d’Alene. The Coeur d' Alene Tribe operates under a democracy form of government. Throughout our country’s history there have been several groups who have fared less that great. Every minority group was treated unfairly, Indians were uprooted and had no control, I can’t imagine for a second being a soldier in combat, women struggled for basic rights, and many people fell victim to the changing ways of our economy, losing their jobs and fighting to survive. It seems wrong to pick one group over another, as if to say some people who were treated horribly or who faced mounting obstacles didn’t actually have it as bad as another group. But throughout all the years we’ve studied, one group that stood out to me who were dealt a horrible fate were Native Americans living in the west during the 19th century. When Americans began to expand westward, Indians unwillingly had their lives flipped upside down and changed drastically. After years of displacement, they were being forced to live in certain areas and follow certain rules, or risk their lives.
Experience changes one’s outlook on the world. Growing up on an Indian Reservation is a tough thing to do. Everyone is poor, and almost every adult is drunk and unhappy. Junior’s father suffers from alcoholism.
Historical trauma has brought psychological effects on the Native American community. Many suffer from alcohol and drug abuse, depression, and poverty. I wondered why they do not get help from the government and after watching the documentary California’s “Lost” Tribes I began to understand that in any reservation the tribe is the government, so they do not have the same rights as a city outside the reservation. Many of the the reservations were placed in areas where they could not do any form of agriculture, so they did not have a source of income. Many of this reservations have to find ways to get themselves out of poverty and many of the reservations within California have found a way to get out of their poverty by creating casinos
The Dakota sioux is a Native Indian Tribe. Their are just over 21,000 Dakota Sioux members living today. In the 19th century, these indians lived in the Great plains. Located in the mid west, this area was filled with grass plains, hills, lakes and rivers. We know refer to this area as Nebraska, North/ South Dakota and parts of Minnesota. Their climate in this area was normal warm summers and cold winters which they relied on each other as a community to help others in need since they did not have a designated doctor until closer to the end of the 19th century. As a White American, I have been virtually unaware of the harsh living conditions that Native Americans have been enduring. This past summer I was fishing and camping at a resort in northwestern Minnesota with my family. I realized that this resort was located on the White Earth Indian Reservation. As I drove around the towns that the resort was near, I saw that the Native Americans were terribly poverty-stricken. Besides the resort that my family and I were staying at and a small casino that was nearby, most of the buildings and houses were in poor condition. The majority of the houses were trailers and not something that I would call “livable.” This raised a few questions in my mind: Why are people on Indian reservations living this way and what other things besides housing are Native Americans lacking? As I began research on these questions, I found three major issues. Poverty, health, and education are three tribulations that, at this point, remain broken on American Indian reservations.
In American Indian Stories, University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London edition, the author, Zitkala-Sa, tries to tell stories that depicted life growing up on a reservation. Her stories showed how Native Americans reacted to the white man’s ways of running the land and changing the life of Indians. “Zitkala-Sa was one of the early Indian writers to record tribal legends and tales from oral tradition” (back cover) is a great way to show that the author’s stories were based upon actual events in her life as a Dakota Sioux Indian. This essay will describe and analyze Native American life as described by Zitkala-Sa’s American Indian Stories, it will relate to Native Americans and their interactions with American societies, it will discuss the major themes of the book and why the author wrote it, it will describe Native American society, its values and its beliefs and how they changed and it will show how Native Americans views other non-Natives.

Cultural competence is a skill essential to acquire for healthcare providers, especially nurses. One of the many cultures that nurses and other health care providers encounter is the American Indian or Native American culture. There are hundreds of different American Indian Tribes, but their beliefs and values only differ slightly. The culture itself embodies nature. To American Indians, “The Earth is considered to be a living organism- the body of a higher individual, with a will and desire to be well. The Earth is periodically healthy and less healthy, just as human beings are” (Spector, 2009, p. 208). This is why their way of healing and symbolic items are holistic and from nature.

The lights dimmed. You could see everyone raising their hands while closing their eyes. In this moment, there was only silence. Each person keeping still. Tears running down the faces of the ones who have been touched. Touched not physically, but touched emotionally in the soul. In this moment there was no fear, there was only strength. Standing and gazing over all the people who were singing, I led them in praise and worship. For many years throughout my highschool career, I’ve led my youth and church through many worships noticing how each and every individual grows and prospers to enhance their fullest potentials. Leading through my voice has strengthen my voice. My voice has grown from a child to a young adults. Leading a group in my church through my voice has not always been easy though, but the ending reward of knowing what I have accomplished in aiding those who need the help is fulfilling.
