My first figurative language example from the text is personification. ‘My throat was dry and the words were choking me, paralyzing my lips. There was nothing else to say’ p.g 15. This impacted me as a reader because having to tell somebody the news that you are leaving your house and all your belongings behind is hard to say to someone especially in this point of time. Also Elie was a kid back then which also makes a big impact because having to be a kid in this time and place is very difficult and scary to go through. It impacts the reading experience because it builds up suspense of what the family will do next since they got kicked out of their house. Also you can kind of get a glimpse that the story might go on to be a tough journey for
the family and might have a impact on how how the author uses his words in the book. Wiesel made this choice to show the readers how big most words they said to each other made such a difference and how his words were tied in with the feelings in this moment. He is trying to accomplish talking and warning the person and people about having to get their belongings together and pack since the Germans are making them. Also he is trying not to break down and get scared because he knows he can not make it any more stressful to his family and the people around him than it already is. My second figurative language example from the text is using a metaphor. ‘That night the soup tasted of corpses’ p.g 72. This impacted me as a reader because feeling that you soup tastes like dead people really made me cringe and make me sad to hear that so many people had died during this time. Also it shows that Wiesel had seen and smelled so many people dying that he could not get it out of his head. It impacts the reading experience My third figurative language example from the text is Hyperbole. ‘My heart was about to burst. There. I was face-to-face with the Angel of Death’ p.g 34. This impacted me as a reader because I did not know what was going to happen to Wiesel and using such big and intense words like Angel of Death really made me more intrigued to keep on reading. Also knowing that Wiesel had probably never gotten this close to fire and never experienced such big emotions really made me feel like I was in his shoes.
“ The horizon was the color of milk. Cold and fresh. Poured out among the bodies” (Zusak 175). The device is used in the evidence of the quote by using descriptives words that create a mental image. The text gives the reader that opportunity to use their senses when reading the story. “Somehow, between the sadness and loss, Max Vandenburg, who was now a teenager with hard hands, blackened eyes, and a sore tooth, was also a little disappointed” (Zusak 188). This quote demonstrates how the author uses descriptive words to create a mental image which gives the text more of an appeal to the reader's sense such as vision. “She could see his face now, in the tired light. His mouth was open and his skin was the color of eggshells. Whisker coated his jaw and chin, and his ears were hard and flat. He had a small but misshapen nose” (Zusak 201). The quotes allows the reader to visualize what the characters facial features looked like through the use of descriptive words. Imagery helps bring the story to life and to make the text more exciting. The reader's senses can be used to determine the observations that the author is making about its characters. The literary device changes the text by letting the reader interact with the text by using their observation skills. In your life, have you ever experienced an event so traumatic that you cannot forget it? Well, a man by the name of Elie Wiesel went through a very traumatic event in his childhood and has yet to forget it. In order to share his experience Elie decided to write the memoir Night. Throughout the entire memoir Elie used figurative language. Figurative language is something an author can use to help their reader paint a mental picture. A few examples are simile, metaphor, and imagery. Elie Wiesel uses figurative language throughout Night and in the passage describing Madame Schachter screaming about fire in the cattle car which is an example of imagery.
Rand uses similes and metaphors to describe two different things such as when Equality compares liberty to a thin blade of iron or when comparing his judgement of mind to the only searchlight that can find the truth. Her work of literary devices also includes personification because in the novel it states” Men never enter the Uncharted Forest, for there is no power to explore and no path to lead among its ancient trees which stand as guards of fearful secrets.” (Rand,48) The writer uses personifications to describe the trees as guards. This is where symbolism comes into place. The Uncharted Forest is symbolizing the desire for forbidden knowledge from the people living to the cities. I feel that the writer most important use of literature is when using dramatic irony throughout the story. Rand’s use of the word “we” is an example of dramatic irony because it acts as a first-person point of view which shows how individualism disappeared in this society. The reader knows that Equality is in the process of discovering himself as the singular word, “I” before himself even aware of this. The word “I” is also what the people in the novel call, the Unspeakable Word. At the point where Equality discovers this, he finds the sense of being an individual. Figurative language is used in a lot of writings to pull you more into the words. Figurative language uses the five senses to place a deep picture in your mind of what is actually happening. Metaphors, similes, personification, hyperbole, etc. are all figurative devices used in writing. Without using any of these things writing would be straight forward and not so complicated to understand. When figurative language is used it makes the reader really think about what is being said by the author and what point the author is trying to make. Both "The Iroquois Constitution” and "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” use figurative language but for different reasons.

Metaphors are used to give the viewer a better understanding of how the composer felt at a certain time. For example, when Li Cunxin enjoyed his stay in America, he told himself that he was “the fish and China is the pond.” From this metaphor we can see how Li felt about China as a fish cannot exist anywhere else other than its pond so like the fish, Li thought he would not be able to live out of China. Another example of a metaphor is when Li refers to his commune as a “deep well.” This metaphor shows us how Li feels trapped in his commune and how it was unlikely for him to ever get out of the situation he was in.

My first college English class was ENC 1101 at the State College of Florida. In this course, I learned a vast amount of information about writing, reading, and grammar. When I first walked into ENC 1101 in August, I expected the class to be like any other English class in High School; with rushed busy work and a lot of useless tests and quizzes. My literacy journey began long before I had actually learned how to read or write. While recently going through baby pictures with my mother, we came across a photo of my father and I book shopping on the Logos boat, a boat that would come to my island every year that was filled with books for our purchasing. Upon looking at this picture, my mother was quite nostalgic and explained how they began my journey to literacy through experiences like this. My earliest memory of experiencing literature was as a small child. My parents would read bedtime stories to me each night before I went to bed. I vividly remember us sitting on the bed together with this big book of “365 bedtime stories for 365 days” and we read one story each day until we had
All I could remember on my journey to literacy was my concern over my brother and sister’s ability to read and write including solving math problems. That did not really motivate not to become literate; I was extremely playful as a child. What I am able to remember is my first day of school, I cried like a baby when my mom dropped me off. I soon began to grow out of my baby stage and school became really interesting. Even though it was not as hard as it is now, the value that pushed me to be literate was how my teacher was able to discipline students if they didn’t give the best to their education.
Another scene I particularly enjoyed was the scene in which a large cask of wine had dropped and broken in the street. Because many people had very little to eat or drink, a large crowd gathered around the dirty puddle and began drinking what they could of the spilled wine. This scene was very descriptive, explaining how the people tried to scoop up the wine in their hands, and how they soaked it up with handkerchiefs from women's heads and squeezed the wine into infants' mouths. Other people licked the stones in the street or sucked on the pieces of wood from the cask. This passage showed how unfortunate many of the people were, without actually saying that they were just poor. Specific words and phrases were used to effectively paint a vivid picture of the scene.
How does an artist create a painting? He or she cannot simply look at a canvas and a picture appear. The artist must be equipped with proper tools to create a masterpiece: paint and brushes. The same can be said about writers. Writers are not born with the knowledge of writing an attractive paper. They must be given tools of writing and shown how to utilize them. Artists and writers without proper tools will be nothing more than blank canvases and empty pages. I used to be a blank canvas, but a teacher gave me the tools I needed, and now I am a polished portrait.
My literacy experience more than likely differs from my peers greatly, in the first grade I was diagnosed with dyslexia. From that point going forward I was not confident at all in my reading and writing ability. My parents spent very little time working with me to better my learning disabilities. I struggled with writing and reading all throughout grade school; I felt as if I was falling behind and would never catch up. I developed a lazy mentality with reading because I never felt as if I would excel because I was always wrong. I am thankful that against my risk factors of failing I also had protective factors such as sports. In school the only thing I felt like I excelled at in school was athletics; I bonded with my gym teachers and coaches more than I did with any other teacher throughout my school years.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
