Going into this class I did not know what to expect because it was my very first education class. Going into the class I was pretty confident that teaching is what I wanted to do, but I was still a bit nervous that the class would change my mind. Luckily it did not and it reassured me that teaching is what I am meant to do with my life. The class itself was a huge eyeopener for things that I never considered when thinking about pursuing a career in teaching. Junior Achievement was also very helpful and reassuring that I made the correct choice of major. Being a freshman I don't have much to compare to when speaking about classes but I can truly say this course was one of my favorites. I always knew I wanted to teach early childhood but I saw myself teaching third grade or above. When I received my Junior Achievement placement and saw that I got kindergarten, I panicked. I thought it was going to be so much more challenging than it turned out to be. I have always been good with little children but didn't think I would be able to teach them and keep their attention. The class I was placed in were incredible, I did not have trouble with them at all. They were always paying attention, eager to learn new things, and participate in any activity I had planned for that class. My mentor teacher was incredible, although I was only there for five weeks I learned so much from her. She treated her students as equals yet still managed to have control of the classroom. My Junior Achievement experience definitely changed my outlook on kindergarten. Although it would not be my first choice, I would not be completely opposed to it. I know that not all classes or students are going to be like my placement but I would definitely be up for the challenge to teach
I contemplated attending graduate school for School Psychology or Educational Administration after completing my undergraduate degree, but I feel that classroom teaching experience will be absolutely vital for success in any career in education. I believe that classroom experience will provide me the exposure and knowledge that will allow me to not only become a professional and successful teacher, but also help to solidify the path I should take for my own education. As a person who enjoys continually learning and growing, I can see myself using the understanding I gained from working in the classroom to shape my future educational goals. I am open and excited for any possibility that opens up as I continue to explore this
Overall, I would love to become an elementary teacher. In fact, I wouldn't mind being a middle school or high school teacher either as long as I get to help my future students become better people, and more importantly, teach them new things. I think I have a fun personality and all of the right qualifications to become a teacher. I plan to attend a four year university when I am done with high school and get my bachelor’s degree in art education (K-12). Then hopefully, after I get a job, I will work towards my master’s degree. Being a teacher is truly what I want to do for the rest of my life.
My first college English class was ENC 1101 at the State College of Florida. In this course, I learned a vast amount of information about writing, reading, and grammar. When I first walked into ENC 1101 in August, I expected the class to be like any other English class in High School; with rushed busy work and a lot of useless tests and quizzes. However, throughout each week of the semester, Professor Knutsen’s class made me beg to differ. This class was not like any other high school English class. In this class I actually learned important information and did not do work just to complete it. I took this course as an elective, I am actually a psychology major and a minor in mathematics. I would have never thought that a teacher is a part of the field of human services. My whole life I have always wanted to be a teacher so I can change children’s lives to something better. My goal as a future teacher is to be like Ms. Rain from the book Precious. I want to educate children to be a well rounded individual. I want to push them to their goals and teach them that if they put their mind into something they can always achieve it. I believe education is a building process, everything from kindergarten through my college years has let me gained and expanded my education through not only learning facts and concepts, but also learning about myself. Through all that I have acquired, I believe Elementary Education is my true calling. My desire to pursue Education, specifically Elementary education came from a discovery of myself. As a college student you look for opportunities to gain knowledge and make a little extra cash on the side. When I took the opportunity to take a job for an after school elementary program called Bricks 4 Kidz, I never thought It would change my views on my major the way it did. I went into college with a mind set on Business Management thinking that was my true calling, but when I experienced how it feels to work with kids and how much I really enjoy it I started rethinking my major. When a student of mine grabbed my leg and begged me to not leave because he wanted me to stay and keep teaching was the moment I knew I was doing something right with my life and that Education was the perfect path for me.
Although I had a variety of options to choose from as my career, I was very passionate to take the path of an Early Childhood Educator. This was to not only inspire the young children that are going to be looking up to me, but to be an educator that will help guide the children to become the best they can be in the present and future. I believe with all the support I can provide my future students, they can achieve the basic knowledge required to move on towards attaining higher academic accomplishments.
In “Why are white people expats when the rest of us are immigrants", Koutonin (2015) explains that in our modern world, there are still hierarchical words that are created with the intention to draw a line between white people and everyone else. One of those words is “expat”. Koutonin cites Wikipedia definition of “expat”, "an expatriate is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country other than that of a person’s upbringing". The author feels the term “expats” has been restricted on use for white people alone. Koutonin strongly believes there is an intentional social stratification between white people and Africans.
Becoming a teacher was not something I always knew I wanted. As I approached an age where I really started considering what I would like to do for a career I only knew that I did not want to work in an office behind a desk all day. I wanted a job that would be interactive, challenging and exciting. I also knew I wanted a job that would be important and would somehow contribute to the world in an important way. I thought being a teacher; particularly a teacher in the primary levels would fulfill those hopes and goals assuming I dedicate myself to becoming an effective teacher who has a positive influence on the lives of my students.

I was never going to be a teacher. My parents would tell you otherwise. As a child, I would spend my time playing school. I would write on my chalk board, create worksheets and homework assignments and take attendance. I would make my bedroom a replica of my safe haven. I guess I was destined to find my way into a classroom. I had also always loved to write, but I wanted to find a way to make money easily in the field so I thought journalism was the way to go. After the first semester of hardcore journalism classes, I concluded that the fast pace stressed me out too much. I worked with a career counselor to narrow down alternate fields of interest and all signs pointed to education. I have not always wanted to be a teacher. I always knew that I wanted to work with children in some way, but I was pretty sure that teaching was not for me. I was well on my way in my junior year of college working toward a biology degree so that I could become a pediatric physician’s assistant. I still cannot explain what happened, but one week I was a biology major, and the next I knew that I have always been meant to teach children. I suppose I just took the longer route to get there than most people do. The two main reasons that I have chosen to become a teacher is that I believe that teaching is extremely personally rewarding in many ways and the fact that I can actively make a difference in someone’s life.
Becoming a teacher has been the ultimate aspiration for myself since the first day I walked into kindergarten. As a very timid student, it was a difficult task transitioning from being with my mother everyday, to being part of a classroom environment full of strangers. However, my kindergarten teacher helped me through this transition smoothly, and adequately. I very quickly learned to love school. Soon after, I knew I would aspire to become a teacher. I would spend countless hours at home with a blackboard, acting as a teacher to my imaginary students throughout my elementary school years.

I did not have any negative experience in the class, I love working with others and I realize that I do have what it takes to be a teacher. I believe in myself more and I trust my peers. I also have the ability to lead and be open minded. I grew throughout this course and so did the relationship I have with my peers. I thought that the teachers did a nice job with their classroom set up. I felt like I could have kept myself busy all day just by looking at the walls and seeing the pictures of presidents and famous historic quotes by famous people of our nations past. One thing I really enjoyed was the time the teachers allotted me at the end of each class to reflect to the class. Not only throughout my past middle school, and high school experiences but also, and most importantly, my current college experiences, the temptations that I have had to endure have definitely been rewarding.
Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I always knew that teaching would be the career for me, especially when I began working in the school system as a substitute secretary. I loved working in the school environment; coming in contact with children everyday made me realize how much I would enjoy teaching a classroom full of students.
