The day before an Organic Chemistry II exam, I felt worried and unprepared as I wrapped up my office hours as an undergraduate teaching assistant (UTA) for CompSci 101. As I sat in the room waiting for my replacement to relieve me, I felt myself being pulled in all directions. At the end of the previous semester, I had ambitiously enrolled myself in two upper-level computer science courses, an infamously difficult statistics course, and second semester organic chemistry. Back then, I had not anticipated that I would have the opportunity to write my own book the following school year or that my manuscripts would be expected in the following
summer.
Ellen goodman really explains the college course Chem 20 that all pre-med students have to take, she describes Chem 20 by “a psychological laboratory of pre-med anxiety…...Every class was a combat mission.” This quote explains that the class was very punishing and grueling to be
Mike Rose met many struggling students at UCLA’s Tutorial Center, the Writing Research Project, and the school’s Summer program. He first describes the loneliness students feel upon arriving at college, and that as they try to find themselves, they all to often lose themselves because they are bombarded with ideas that are so foreign to them. He introduces his audiences to Andrea, a bright young girl out of high school who, despite hours of memorizing in her textbook, could not obtain a passing grade on her Chemistry mid-term. How is this possible if she spent so much time studding? Rose explains that she failed because in college, and in this course in particular, it is not enough for a student to know the material, but rather, to be able to apply it in a various amount of problems. Yet the problem Andrea faces is that she was never taught this in high school.
About two years ago my closest friend passed away. As I sat at her bedside in the hospital I was shocked to see her in that stricken position. I wondered why was this happening to her?Why was she suffering needlessly? Since I was the age of 16, I have had the desire to help others. It first started with my neighbor Cheryl Conel. Cheryl was an intimately close neighbor of mine who I used to work for. As the years went by Cheryl and I became closer and our friendship strengthened considerably. She became my first strong female role model. Cheryl became very ill one day and learned that she had a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. This bacteria presented very suddenly and quickly caused her to lapse into a coma. I didn't understand at the time just how ill she was-- in my mind I thought she was going to recover and go home soon. I quickly learned that this bacteria is very difficult to eradicate and about a week later on December 9th 2009, Cheryl passed away. I was extremely devastated because I had just lost my mentor and my best friend. I wanted to learn mo...
During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. Again, the journey was long, but I will be forever grateful for the things that I, and all of my peers have gained from this
...n of chemistry, I enjoyed the more complex parts related to the subject, but even a student who has minimal experience with chemistry will enjoy the chapter and its amusing stories about what just seem to be normal elements. Though some people may feel discouraged from reading the chapter because it is educational, they should not because unlike most educational texts, it does not feel as if information is being thrown at the reader. Its casual and sometimes crude tone make it more humorous, entertaining, and like a novel. The author’s enthusiasm is contagious and makes the reader want to hear him out and see what he is so passionate about. The author conveys and uses anecdotes and pure chemistry to back up the message that in some circumstances, what may seem bad can become good, and vice versa—a lesson that is not only applied to chemistry, but to life in general.
A career in medicine is one of the most prestigious careers to have not only in the United States, but in the world. A career that allows you to help mankind and help people survive in a world filled with diseases and harmful bacteria must be a true blessing. Enriching lives of others would not only benefit them, but would bring a deeper meaning into my life. If I had the chance to choose any career I wanted, why not choose a career that will introduce me to new patients and cases that I had to critically think to find the best care to help them recover? Why not choose a career with job stability and the ability to specialize in anything I wanted and be one of the people in charge to make the big decisions? My motivation in medicine started
I have 3 career paths that I would possibly be interested in, these career paths consist of Marine Biology, Oceanology, and Marine Archeology. However, AZCIS Only provides information for Marine Biology, limiting my career choices to a singular occupation. I say Marine Biology because I love the ocean, I love the mysteries behind it, and how little of it has been discovered. I love Marine animals, the different species, food chains, and the different lifestyles. Therefore, I want an occupation that would allow me to explore the ocean and study the incredible life forms inside it, being a Marine Biologist allows me to do that.
Chemistry 1A03 is a discussion of chemical fundamentals, including bonding, structure, reactivity and energetics, with emphasis on applications to health, energy and the environment. The typical week for chemistry starts on Mondays where I watch online modules covering the information in the weekly lectures. Before the lectures but after watching the modules, an online quiz is due at midnight every Tuesday must be completed. Some may find this structure for learning odd however, it helps hone my time management skills as the deadline for the weekly quizzes is rather rigid. Furthermore, the quizzes force me to learn the material and mitigates the effects of procrastination. Procrastination is the bane of my success and leads me to cram my learning.
The first day of school at any level typically resonates among students as the most laidback day. In college, it is most likely the only day that material is not lectured to half asleep students and instead students sit bright, cheery eyed listening to the professor go over the class syllabus. This style of text encompasses what the professor intends to accomplish and teach students throughout the duration of the course. Looking within the setting of a lab class at the UW, the CHEM 242 syllabus serves to educate students of certain standards regarding the actions and attitudes of students to promote a sense of safety, preparedness, and responsibility in lab.
The biggest problem with being a first generation child is living with idea that your parents sacrifice isn’t wasted on your unwillingness to see their dreams come true. Becoming a doctor, lawyer, or an engineer isn’t your dream or goal, it’s theirs’s. As a child growing up, I was pushed towards a medical route by my father, as he had high hopes of me becoming a big name doctor. With the idea of medicine in mind, I really had no idea in what direction I wanted to go. The possibilities of what I wanted to do in life in regards to medicine were endless. So I started to turn towards TV and one of the most influential shows that got me into what I wanted to do is the show Dexter. Dexter’s field of work was not exactly what I had in mind, but it led me to focus on Forensic Science. With a little extra research I found a job that I had my eyes set on, and that was becoming a Medical Examiner.
I am doing my externship at Abeltin & Migoya LLP. Currently, I am assisting the supervising attorneys with drafting and responding to discovery. The first goal I would like to accomplish during the externship is to develop client interviewing skills. The second goal is to develop and learn good lawyering skills. The third goal is to build more confidence in asking questions and approaching new projects. I discussed all three these goals with my supervising attorney on the first day of my externship.
For as long as I can remember, I knew I was destined for the medical field. I can recall being as young as seven, reading books about human anatomy and watching shows that shadowed real life doctors. I was hooked from the start. Eleven years later and this passion still burns strong within me. It is my goal in life to help those in my community. For this reason, I will be pursuing a career in forensic pathology. My journey will begin at Cal State Fullerton where I will work to obtain a B.S. in Biological Sciences.
During my freshman year, I remember encountering microorganisms in a microscope for the first time in my biology class. I examined the way different cells behaved and their overall structure. This was a turning point in the way I envisioned science around me since it gave me insight on living organisms and fostered my spark in biology. As my science curriculum advanced and my drive to learn biology in different interdisciplinary ways intensified, I developed a second passion for chemistry. Throughout my chemistry curriculum, my experience was enriched through experiments and substances reactions. I began to underline a connection between chemistry and biology which cultivates my desire for studying biochemistry.
The occupation that I choose was pharmacy tech because pharmacy tech’s work mostly in the back of the pharmacy dispensing medicine and not dealing with customers so much as Pharmacists do. I would like to work in this occupation because, like I said in the beginning, I would not like to deal with people as much as Pharmacists do. I would like to work in this occupation because pharmacy tech they work in the back and sometimes, they answer questions that the patients have about the medicine. Pharmacy tech’s also dispense medicine for patients, answer question that the patients have, like I said before, and supply medicine for patients whether it's over the counter or prescription. Another occupation that I was considering doing was to be a pharmacist. The reason why I was considering being a pharmacist's was because they also distribute medicine like the pharmacy tech’ s do, they provide information about
Ever since I was little, my dream was always to be a Marine Biologist. Marine Biologist seems like such a fun and interesting job I would love to part take in. My Aunt is a Marine Biologist and I feel she had a great impact on me when deciding that Marine Biology is something I really want to go involved in once I’m older. I also have a goal with my life to do something that makes both me and my mom extremely proud of me.
