The fall of my freshmen year at Salem State University, I started working as an assistant teacher at an after- school program at Horace Mann Laboratory School, which is the elementary school located on campus. I instantly fell in love with working with the children, but fell out of love with my major at the time, education. I started to contemplate and do research on what I really wanted to major in. Prior to working in my field, it seemed that I waited a very long time to be in the position I wanted to be in. When I first started working in my field I was very excited. Working as a Community support Worker, I often thought to myself that my current position would be the closest I would get to a social worker position. I was ecstatic about my achievements until I realized that I still was unsatisfied and I wanted more. When I realized my current career as a community support worker, was not enough for me I decided to advance in my field. I was one of those children who wanted to be a veterinarian when I was young, but I decided after taking an Early Childhood Education class that I wanted to be a teacher. I have then signed up for the teacher cadet program at my school. To reach my goals, I realize that I must pursue at least a four year college education beginning in the Fall 2016 semester. My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree.
I am a student aid at John Reith Elementary for an AM/PM kindergarten class, mostly for the PM class. My first week at the school, I only observed the teacher and students. The students were working on their station activities such as reading and playing a game. On this particular day, as the am class was getting to leave, the pm class joined the am class in singing songs together. The pm teacher was absent and a substitute teacher filled in. The pm teacher planned out a detailed lesson plan for the substitute teacher to follow such as name tags for each kid and worksheets. The students were helpful during role call by saying other students name or which student was absent. The teacher assigned table leaders, and the students were in charge of passing out papers and getting the necessary materials such as pencils and crayons. The substitute went over the math lesson, passed out the worksheet, and each student did the worksheet. They read “Chika, Chika Boom Boom” and drew a tree and had lunch time. The AM teacher passed out Ritz crackers to the students that forgot their lunch. If the substitute teachers had a question, she would ask the am teacher. The am teacher kept the students on track if they were doing something wrong. Even though the substitute teacher didn’t follow the lesson plan exactly, she was able to get the students back on track.
In the middle of my junior year, I got a job with the YMCA for an After School Leader position at a local elementary school. My family was surprised that I applied for this job because it would require that I scold kids and yell across fields, which is out of my character. Being a soft-spoken person, I would have to put more effort into my job than my coworkers would but, I was more than ready to step up to the job. Everyday immediately after school, I report to Pu’u Kukui Elementary School and before getting out of the car, I shake off any negative energy so that I can lead in the best way that I can. The type of student I am has greatly evolved from elementary school. I have always been intelligent but my work in elementary school did not reflect my intelligence level. My work was sloppy, disorganized and borderline illegible. I got stressed out and frustrated while working on school work in elementary school. I can recall how my homework got done in elementary school. I’d start with a grin ear to ear, open my folder and pull out the assignment. Shortly after I began working,my smile would turn into a frown, and I would began to cry. and scream “I can’t do this!”.
I was in Kindergarten, and this moment would scar me for the rest of my life. I had a friend at Vanderlyn Elementary school that I felt like could never be separated from me. He was my ride or die, my best friend forever, and the person I trusted with everything. However, it all changed when he decided to make the worst decision of his life. Although I don't remember his name I still remember his little afro and what he did to me almost a decade ago. Something I will never forget. We are going to call this awful excuse for a human being Gabe.
My interest persisted and grew as I began to see how my efforts had the ability to improve the lives of people around me. I first noticed this on a personal level as friends would come to me for advice or for me to listen to their struggles and provide comfort. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or common the story was, I listened to them in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. I truly enjoyed hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. These moments helped me realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it increased my interest of pursuing a career where I can support those who need it most. I want to become a social worker so I can provide direction to those who may not be able to get it from other sources, just like I have done for various people throughout my life.
Sitting in my wooden desk in Mrs. Leeper’s fourth grade class, I realized I needed a genuine friend, someone who I could always trust to be there for me. We were about one month into school, and everyone began to find their group of friends to play with for the year. Our class motto, “A friend loves at all times,” was plastered on a poster on the wall, and distracted my brain from learning. I recollected my thoughts and replayed the situations from lunch and recess. I had quickly followed behind my group of friends and tried to participate in the conversations as much as I could.
In pursuit of a graduate degree from Eastern Michigan University and preparing my required personal statement, I reflected on the original statement that began my social work journey; my application to the Social Work program at Bowling Green State University. Although there are many examples of personal growth and development as a Social Worker and as an individual when you contrast the two statements, there was one commonality. When I applied for my undergraduate degree in Social Work practice I was interested in a variety of different fields and concentrations. That remains true to this day. I have an interest in all different fields of practice which has allowed me to benefit greatly from an education focused on generalist practice.
Currently, I work at the Foster Knox Day Care here at UCM. Being a Social Work major has enhanced my love of helping children. After taking Human Behavior, I can cue in what is going on in the developmental stage of the child life. Now I understand that a two-year may not say No to be defiant. Being able to interact with children has made me more aware that I want to work with children as a social worker.
This assignment was slightly difficult for me. I struggle with talking to people I don’t know well in normal situations, but having to find and call someone to interview was very stressful for me. I strongly dislike talking to people on the phone unless they are a close friend or family member. The part that made me more nervous was actually having to interview someone. I have only had to do one job interview in my whole life and I was so nervous I could hardly talk. This is quite different than a job interview, but public speaking isn’t a strong skill that I possess.
