Personal Narrative: My Experience In A Juvenile Detention Center

I have learned more about English in the fifteen weeks than I did in four years of high school. While this semester was a challenge it certainly made me a better writer. It has also showed me that high school does not do the best job at preparing students for college. The hardest thing for me was sentence structure and making sure my grammar was correct. The face that each paper we wrote was completely different from the last is what made me learn the most. The narration paper we wrote at the beginning of the semester was an eye opener to me. When the assignment was first given I remember thinking it was going to be easy. I choose to write about the impact juvenile detention center had on me. I wanted to focus on the positive aspects of my experience in a juvenile detention center. I struggled to get my point across because I focused too much on why I was there instead of my experiences. I found it difficult to quote facts and put the research into my own words. At the start of the paper I thought that a research paper should not have my own opinion. During the writing process I learned that a research paper is on fact my educated opinion on the topic. I did research on paraphrasing and intext citations. Nevertheless, I learned the most from this paper, I feel like I could write a good research paper now. In conclusion, writing papers take a lot of time, effort, and not something you can thro together the night before. The more you revise the better your paper can be. Even though I’m still not an excellent writer, I have improved greatly since the beginning of the semester. Each paper was a different type of writing, so each paper taught me something different each time. The transition from one style to another was very helpful in me learning all the things I have in English
