I have 2 years and 11 month as a Correctional Sergeant. In that time my experiences as a correctional sergeant has been both as an area supervisor for adult and youth offender programs section, segregation and a shift supervisor. As an area supervisor I have had to handle many different inmate issues to include but not limited to the following: conducting inmate disciplinary, handling inmate grievances, inmate property, inmate classifications, and disruptive inmates. As an area supervisor I was also in charge of many officers where I had to train and develop their skills being that most of them had under a year experience. I also have experience as a shift sergeant where I was in charge of posting 124 officers a day for a swing shift and ensuring that minimum staffing requirements were met. As a shift sergeant I also had to complete officer's evaluations annually, occasionally write performance cards and also ensure completion of on the job training forms. feeding. I was in charge with ensuring that inmates were brought up to the operations building for legal telephone conferences as well as parole and probation hearings. In closing I have also been afforded the opportunity to teach new academy trainees in many different topics such as intercommunication skills, prison rape elimination act, contraband, use of force and hand cuffing techniques.
There has been many controversies in many patrol stations here at the Houston Police Department regarding a 10 hours shift called “power shift”. When I first start off my career as a patrolman, I had the opportunity to either choose an 8 hour or 10 hour shift. The difference between those two shifts are the days off. For instance, an officer who works an 8 hour shift will have a two days weekend, and officers who works a 10 hour shift will have a three day weekend. Some supervisors believe having power shifts is an advantage because it overlaps all three shifts (e.g. days, evenings, nights), in terms of relieving officers during shift change. Some officers hate getting dispatched to a late call especially when their shift ends in about 15 minutes. Power shift officers will pick up the slack and relief 8 hour shift officers so they can end their tour of duty. Power shifts will also save divisions money.
Murphy’s law states that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. As someone who bears the name I can attest the truth in that statement. I have an extremely blessed life and do not endure the suffering that many people do on a daily basis. However, I have bizarre connections to small misfortunes and circumstances that follow me back as far as I can remember. Being an officer who protects and serves is already quite terrifying. Having to be with inmates that have killed or assaulted people are the worst of the worst. A correctional officer has big responsibilities to keep themselves safe and their families safe when they go home later that day. You have to think about what goes through the minds of the inmates when you have to keep them in check, or watch over them. Do they want to kill you, your family, show up at your house.
Patrol shifts consist of patrol officers working permanent shifts and the sergeants working rotating shifts. Consequently, sergeants only work with certain officers on one shift for up to 56 days until their shift rotates to the next 8-hour shift. Therefore, sergeants do not supervise any one officer for more than 56 days and are likely to go through two 56-day cycles without ever supervising certain officers (Deputy Chief D. Something happened my sophomore year of high school that little did I know would change my perspective, not only of myself, but life in general. I was looking for something new and exciting to enhance my high school existence and decided to give the Criminal Justice Club a try. I was familiar with the advisor of the club, but knew that the club had astigmatism for attracting those students who were just looking for something easy to do. I knew about the criminal justice system, but only what they show on Law and Order. However, I immediately fell in love, not only with the club but the entire prospect of Criminal Justice. I was a clueless nineteen-year-old headed home from college in Pasadena via Metro. I always enjoyed my ride to and from school. However, since I wake up at five in the morning, six times a week, eight hours a day, to make ends meet, I’m too exhausted to enjoy the scenery. Nevertheless, going home via Metro gold line, was a sanctuary for me.
Louisville has really struggled the last year with murders and violent crimes. The Chiefs staff, Kim included, went to a city council meeting where the Chief was asked some very tough questions. The main question was if Louisville had a gang problem. Many people know that in the past, the police never wanted to admit that there was a problem, but the command staff knew that you can’t fix something if you deny that it exists. Again, Kim’s excellent speaking ability placed her right up front on the news as the media asked the tough questions. Kim and the other commanders knew that the police cannot arrest our way out of the violence problem in Louisville. The community had to know the issues and being transparent is a necessity. I got into a car accident on 6/8/2017 around 5:00-6:00 PM at the intersection of City Ave and Bryn Mawr Ave, I was driving in the lane that was furthest to the left heading toward Maple Ave when a driver that was on the right lane made a sudden turn into my lane and hit the right side of my car. When the police got to the scene they said the other driver was at fault. My car had minor damages (Pictures attached). The driver that hit me did not have car insurance, the passenger that was in the car with the driver had car insurance however her insurance refused to cover my damages because they did not cover the driver, so
I have been blessed to have led a highly fulfilling career over the past 22 years. The Air Force’s standards of conduct and performance have helped me mature into an adult while creating lasting memories along the way. I have had the opportunity to make significant contributions to my country that offer a sense of pride and personal achievement. Officer Carl works a twelve-hour shift which starts from 8:00 clock in the morning to 8:00 clock in the evening, but at times he rotates shifts during the weekend.
