Personal Narrative: My Brother's Sports Injury The social forces of the world today have a tremendous impact on a person's life. Social forces can make you change the way you think, the way you act, and even your personality, especially on early teens. In some cases people don't realize it is changing them. My brother, Beau, attends school in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He is a 4.0 honor student and president of his class. He plays football, basketball, baseball, and wrestles. He is "Mr. Popular" amongst his fellow classmates, but on February 5, 1999 this would all change. Beau was wrestling at a tournament in Sulfur, Oklahoma on February 5, 1999. He had made it to the championship match later that evening. The match was going well. Beau was ahead 5 to 3 until disaster struck. Billy Thompson, the person my brother was wrestling, had Beau in a headlock. Beau then put his foot behind Billy's feet in order to trip him, but Billy held on. My brother landed on the top of his head breaking his neck between the first and second vertebrae. Imminently he was rushed to the nearby hospital in Sulfur. The radiologist said he had a strained neck muscle and sent him home in a soft collar brace. The next day Beau went to the doctor in Shawnee and she imminently referred him to the neurosurgeon in Oklahoma City, Dr. Hisie. Dr. Hisie found the break and scheduled a surgery. The surgery lasted about 4 hours. They took bone off of Beau's him and fused the vertebrae together. After 4 months in a neck restraint, they realized that the fusion did not work. They attempted the same surgery again, but this time putting him in a halo. After another 4 month the fusion had worked. Beau then went through 6 months of physical therapy before he was able to play sports again. Altogether the process took about 2 years. He now is starting practice for the basketball team in Shawnee. After Beau broke his neck, Beau got a lot of sympathy for family and friends. As time grew on, since he couldn't do anything, his friends grew apart from him. They kind of cased him aside and he was left all alone.
People in the modern society we live in today are the ones that are shaped by society. Say there is a new trend, that trend can change people
As a teenager we are all looking to be accepted by our peers and will do whatever it is they want us to so we can be accepted. That is to say the feeling of needing to be accepted by ones peers is done consciously; the person starts to do what their friends do without thinking about it. (Teen 3) In fact, teens are more likely to be affected by peer pressure because they are trying to figure out who they are. (How 1) Therefore, they see themselves as how their peers would view them so they change to fit their peer’s expectations. (How 1) Secondly, the feeling of needing to rebel and be someone that isn’t who their parents are trying to make them be affects them. (Teen 2) Thus, parents are relied on less and teens are more likely to go to their peers about their problems and what choices to make. (How 1) Also, their brains are not fully matured and teens are less likely to think through their choices thoroughly before doing it. (Teen 6) Lastly, how a child is treated by his peers can affect how they treat others; this can lead them into bullying others who are different. (Teen 3) Consequently this can affect a teen into doing something good or bad; it depends who you surround yourself with.
Conformity means a change in one’s behavior due to the real or imagined influence of other people. As a teenager, the pressure to conform to the societal “norm” plays a major role in shaping one’s character. Whether this means doing what social groups want or expect you to do or changing who you are to fit in. During class, we watched films such as Mean Girls, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Breakfast Club which demonstrate how the pressure to conform into society can change who you are. In the movies we have seen, conformity was most common during high school.
When i Was at the mosque outside on the court while i was playing a 3 on 3 basketball game. And the teams was me, bosh and Salah vs Abu, Sunny and Musa. We started to play, and my team was down by 8 points. So i was kind of mad at my team that we was down by so much. So i told them let me take over and try to get us back in the game. So they let me take over and we went on a 7-0 run and out of nowhere we was only down by one point. Then we made a turn over, then they got the ball and they passed it to abdi. And abdi got through his defender and bosh stepped up and tried to block his shot but he head faked bosh and i step and try to block his shot and i jumped up tried to block his shot and my knee cap moved out of
I went into my junior spring soccer season kind of sad, my past coach, wasn't going to be our team coach this year. I wasn't really depressed though, because I had tons of friends that were playing this year. One of the great things about soccer is that it is not a school-sanctioned sport. To me this said that I was able to play another season of soccer with my friends from Paonia and Hotchkiss without the normal High School rivalry between these schools. Year after year, the schools pulled pranks on each other, sometimes nothing big, but sometimes something big. I remember my freshman or sophomore year, when a few guys I knew went over to Paonia and painted their skylight in their commons. When the sun shined into the skylight, it reflected a big HHS onto the floor, talk about a cool prank, but hey they got a free vacation but the school had to pay a ton of money to clean it up.
Peers are one of the most influential agents in this stage. Your peers could pressure you into very reckless behavior. Peer presure is a very dangerous thing and could lead to an adolecent taking a different path than the one that they wanted. In some cases, however, peer pressure can be beneficial. If you have many peers that are all planning on going to the same college and they have asked you to join, you may feel obligated, or pressured, into doing better in your schooling to receive the grades you need to go to that college. The peers you have can also influence you without using peer pressure. If you have a group of peers that you socialize with on a daily bases, you start to act like them which can help you or hurt you depending on the peers you have chosen to interact with. Another part of the peers that you socialize with, and acting like them, is that those peers are who define you whether you like it or not. The saying You are who you hang with applies to this
This essay will discuss what is socialisation, and explain two agents of socialisation, which is primary socialisation and secondary socialisation and what the positives and negatives about the socialisations are and analyse. To start off what is socialisation, socialisation is where the process of learning of the culture of any society. (Browne 2006) which means that when you are born you are learning and learn your culture of living, language, beliefs, norms and values, defying what sex you are means you learn differently to each other you both are equal but have different norms and values of being a girl or a boy. This gets passed through generation to generation. Socialisation has a big part of defining who we are and what we do in our life, and help form our personalities. (Browne 2006) as we can define ourselves by where we live, sexuality, religion, gender, a student or mother/father. This helps us form an individual identity that we tell people, this can be helped from family, friends, school, work, the mass media. So primary socialisation will include being taught norms and values from early child hood years which is assisted by agents like the family or people that are close to you. Secondary socialisation is where you get taught your norms and values from agents like
The purpose of this paper is to try and explain how outside influences help and sometimes hinder your development as a person. Influences such as family, media, and individual peer groups have a great impact on the particular type of person you will become. Socialization does not stop when you reach a certain age, but is a lifelong process which helps us become aware of one’s self identity.
Society is a social factors that has many ways in which its mold a individual and
In the analysis of society in today's times, the motives of social change, control, and conformity provides the basis of how society controls human behavior. The ideals and expectations place onto people in modern society are established through means of control where people are expected to behave within a spectrum of normality and what society deems as acceptable behavior. Forms of social influence as simple as peer pressure and wanting to fit in transform into major controls of society like laws, law enforcement officers and the government as a whole. The way that people make sense of their environment is through formed first impressions, interpretations of other people's behavior and how that behavior affects their attitudes, stereotypes, and perceptions of other types of people. The overall impact of these ideas on individuals shows how conformity, persuasion, stereotypes, and culture affect how society maintains and changes social norms.
In so many ways society impacts our lives and put perceptions on how everyone should look and act. Everyday everyone, including myself, looks at these perceptions and cannot help but take something from them. I always try to keep my identity unique and cherish my values but every now and then it seems like I have changed. In someway that is always true but it is hard not to wonder how much change was due to social standards.
People around an individual will always try to influence them in a particular direction. They will attempt to dictate on how the individual should conduct their lives; the dictations could be direct or indirect. The direct influence is whereby one has to conduct their lives based on the set social rules and regulations. In the indirect influence, one is just expected to flow with the prevailing social norms and values of a group of a people. What follows from all the influences is called social conformity. An overwhelmed person has to change their behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs just to fit within a group. However, it is not a must for one to conform to the social expectations, but some are too weak to stand up against social conformity. Therefore, the role of social conformity is to control a person, but an individual can always resist and live as they wish.
An article about childhood development makes a strong statement, “To make sense of the world around them, young adolescents, as learners, build upon their individual experiences and prior knowledge--They also tend to be inquisitive about adults and are often keen observers of adult behavior,” (Caskey). When we are born all we can do is observe to learn. Family, peers, even our pets teaches us so much and mold us to become complex adults. There has never been a doubt in my mind that I would be who I am today without my friends and my parents. We must be be careful choosing who is going to be our friends, since you will be molded by them, “The social environment is perhaps even more crucial for a young person 's future development,” (Csikszentmihalyi). The social environment for adolescents that is around them changes they way they think because we learn from others and what’s around us. Even the music we listen to can how we talk, because again, we learn from our surroundings. The younger we are, the more vulnerable we are to influences and can absorb and act on what we’ve learned from, media, friends etc., “Young adolescents are also socially and emotionally vulnerable due to influences of media,” (Csikszentmihalyi). Even shows like “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” “Real Housewives of Orange County,” ‘portray’ a real life, and children are perceiving that this is how you should and act in daily life. Could you imagine the next generation acting like the people on those reality shows? Clearly, everything that is out in the world, can have some impact on you or others, we are constantly learning from others and even the
Society shapes our personality. That means who we socialize with molds who you are as a person. Through the process of socialization you learn values, morals, beliefs, norms, and your role in this world. The people who we surround ourselves with are the ones that influence us the most. Agents of socialization (groups that influence you) are a big part of your social structure because it’s who we interact with the most. Our Significant Others (individuals that influence you) are also important because sometimes certain individuals have a meaningful role in your life and have a lot of guidance over you. Both agents of socialization and significant others have functions in your life and contribute to the kind of person you are today.
...ience knowledge is a powerful resource for understanding and coping with the growing complexities, uncertainties and risks in our world” (Kazancigil, 2003, p379). Individuals are the parts which form societies as a whole. Individuals have a mutual relationship with societies. Both of them are under the control of social science; social science’s tool for overseeing them is legislation. Various rules shape diverse societies where individuals interact differently. It is not an option to be a part of society or not, since we were born we became a part of society. So, as long as we relate to societies, we should care and learn about social science. Through social science we learn the reasons of our actions and our manners. If we required modifying our behaviours in order to mature and boom our talents, social science is here to help us and show us the ways.
