Personal Narrative: Moving To Florida

My memory of strolling up and down St. George Street in St. Augustine is more than just a cherished flashback, it’s the start of a new life. Prior to moving to Florida, both of my parents were in the Navy, resulting in our family having to move all around the East Coast frequently. When it was revealed that we would finally settle down in Florida, our first visit would be none other than the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine. This memory of St. Augustine is so important to me because it piqued my interest in history, it gave me a chance to spend time with my mom, and I was able to witness my first sunset.
The first history lesson I received came not from a textbook, but from walking down the cobblestone streets of St. Augustine. The first place my mother and I toured was the Oldest Wooden School House in the country. I remember how the splintered wood brushed across my palm when I opened the door, which gave a drawn out high pitched screech. As light flooded into the small room, so many questions popped into my six year old brain with my curiosity mounting as I continued to explore around the cabin. Augustine by far, had to be being with my mom all day long. Before coming to Florida, my mother and I rarely spent time together; she worked long shifts at a naval hospital, while I waited at a daycare. What made this trip to St. Augustine so special were the simple things, such as holding my mother’s hand as we navigated through the swarms of people in tight walkways. Another memorable moment came on the trolley, with my mom pointing out the many attractions around the area, such as The Bridge of Lions and Castillo de San Marcos, much to my amazement.
