“Goodbye,” broken and hesitant as I could barely get the words out. Waving back at me was Aman. A small boy who would change my life forever. In middle school, my english teacher, Mrs.Skiba started a program called Fridays’ Friends to help the special needs children at our school. Seeing the lack of social interaction the children in the special education program were receiving she decided there needed to be a change. I thought her idea was fantastic but I couldn’t help but be nervous. I’d never done something like that before and I was terrified because I didn’t know what to expect. Nevertheless, the first day finally came and she brought our english class down that Friday to meet the kids. This is where I met Aman. Aman
Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it. Not only was I able to teach her math and reading comprehension skills, but how to carry herself as a smart and extraordinarily capable young lady. In return, she taught me patience and how sometimes you just need to approach a problem differently to see the
Middle school was a amazing experience, for me anyway. I, myself have changed tremendously from the beginning of 6th grade to the end of 8th grade. Not just in appearance either, on the inside as well.
Mrs. Plot, one of the hardest English teachers in Murray County High School, was my teacher that year. She was a very determined and driven teacher that did not tolerate her students to fail her class, even if they were lazy. I had heard horror stories from her former students, but she was nothing like they said she was. She was the only teacher that I have connected with all throughout school. I looked forward to her class every morning because she always made learning fun. Mrs. Plot gave out good advice about English, but she also gave me personal advice and was more of a friend to me. She always knew what to say to me when I had problems. She motivated me to do better with my writing; we went to a journalism class together every week that year. Mrs. Plot deepened my love for reading and writing. Without her, I would not be the kind of student I am today. On every assignment in her class, I got the most feedback and it helped me out a lot. It took me a long time to become a decent writer, but with her help she sped up the process. I put all of my effort in every single paper I have written, especially for her
During recess, there were a couple of students playing a game called double dutch. Double dutch is when two rope goes the opposite direction. Brianna wanted to play with them but she did not know how to jump with two rope. One of Brianna friends saw how sad she was she began to help her. This was shocking to me because most kids would just look at her and keep it moving. But that was really nice for Brianna friend to teach her how to double dutch. Couple days had past and Brianna had got the hang of it, and now she is able to play with them and not feel left out.
Anna and I spent many evenings doing her homework together for the two English classes she decided to take. One of her first writing assignments was to write a two page paper on who her hero was. She asked me to read her paper to make sure that there were no grammatical or punctuation errors and as I was reading her paper tear welled up in my eyes. She wrote that her hero was me. How my unselfishness to have a complete stranger stay in my home and to allow this stranger to have the same luxuries and experiences that I get in my everyday life was something she had never experienced before. She was grateful that I had "chose" her as a student to stay in my home and that she was very blessed to have someone who cared so much.

We were both trying to make sense of the messiness that exists in education inequity, and the process did not have to be pretty, but it had to happen. Each day I left her class fired up and inspired to do better and be better for our
We were standing in line outside of class waiting for our teacher. In front of me was Angel and his best friend.
In a low point I meet Miss April. During second grade the school David was at refused him help. Even though his reading was a 1.1 and math 1.6 they offered no help. Did research at the library and ask for help when looking reading help up. April worked there and helped me that day. When she asked why I was looking up reading help I started crying. Asked for help from the school they said David was fine. He was falling further behind in reading and math. It is wrong to feel the way I felt, hopeless. I walked in the Kingsland Library, meet Miss April, then started to cry. She hugged me until I stopped crying. In asking she found out the problems we had for years at that point. April is a reading tutor and a librarian who was willing to take David as a student. Having someone there who can guide you when it is necessary is priceless.
I want to share the experience that I got from reading to the little kids in Washington school. This had been my first time doing community service so I was a little nervous, I didn't think that the kids where going to like me. But when I go to the school and saw the lovable little kids I felt much better. When we got into little groups and started reading they started hugging me and reading along. They made me feel good and I was ready to come back next Thursday. This was the greatest experience that I had ever had, I felt like a teacher and it fells great to have those little kids liking you.
All my life I have met many people who have left an impact on my life whether it be in sports, work, extracurriculars, or even just meeting someone you don’t know.
It was second semester. I was in science class looking for a seat. But the only seat available was next to a girl people described as mean. I was terrified to talk to her because I thought she might go off on me. When I finally got enough courage to talk to her I realized she was extremely awesome (because of her cool attitude) and not mean. She gave me things like food. A friend was made.
Growing up in a neighborhood right next to my grade school in Des Peres, I made some of the best friends I have had throughout my life. We lived in a neighborhood called Bayberry Hills and Thomas, who lived up the street, was one of the first friends I remember having as we went to preschool, kindergarten and grade school together. Just down the street from me, I had two other friends, Joseph and Charlie. Charlie being a few years younger than us had trouble keeping up in anything we would do but I would never replace the laughs and good times he gave us. We were inseparable, waking up early in the morning and rode bikes until we were allowed to play video games. We spent countless hours over the summer and after school clearing out sections
I would like to start off with a very influential and meaningful quote said by Maya Angelou, “The first time someone shows you who they are, believe them.” When I was in the 7th grade, a new student joined us by the name of Kieran Rose. I was assigned to show him around school, help him make friends and most importantly make sure he was comfortable in his new environment. Six years later, he is now my best and closest friend.
I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart. I hope that I touched each student in a special way, because the students that I got the opportunity to help learn touched my
