Over this semester, I have progressed greatly in improving my ability to adequately read and study textbook. During this semester, I have learned many ways of improving my studying methods such as using the SQR3 method to help implement information into my memory and learning how to take notes that are more comprehensive so that I can study more effectively. I also highlight important information in my textbooks and I make flashcards of this so I can study the material. These methods have greatly helped me understand complex materials and memorize them. I have progressed more than I ever expected during this semester, but I know I can progress even more now.
My learning style has greatly affected the way I study and retain information. I have

I researched the INTP personality type and how INTPs learn. I learned that INTPs learn best by repetition and having a clear objective so I used this information to help me study and in turn helped me memorize and retain more information. I applied the new information that I had acquired to my study habits and my life. I will use the information I have learned so far in my life and build on it for as long as possible.
My LASSI test results showed me that I greatly lacked in my interest in schooling and that I greatly lacked in motivation. I have tried to improve these fields by studying every night and in doing so I have increased my grades. I keep myself motivated and interested in my schooling, because of this I have to study more efficiently and I read my textbooks before class so that I can be more successful.
Before University Seminar, I did not study and when I did, I did not study adequately. During this class, I realized that in order to succeed I need to put effort into studying and retaining important information that I am prompted with. Now, I try to focus in class, take adequate notes for information that I do not know, and do all my work as soon as possible without procrastinating. In doing this, I have greatly improved my
One of my studying techniques is to have one of my family members verbally assess me on the topic of examination based on information in my textbook for the given subject. This compares to what I have just learned because I sometimes alter the location of study during these sessions, such as one time in the dining room and one time in another room of the house. However, I would always stay on one subject for a long time, which may not have been a very good idea. Another studying technique that I used to have was studying the night before or the morning of the exam because I thought (with the influence of a girl from my fifth grade class) that the information would be easy to retain since it was so recently reviewed. This compares to the article since all of the material comes back to me, but is mostly forgotten long after I take the examination. This goes along with the scientific study mentioned in the article that students who had two studying sessions did exceptionally well on a test given right after the sessions, but gradually forgot the material (Carey, 2010). An additional studying condition I have is to do practice problems and tests on the material I will be tested on. This connects to the reading for the reason that I am being exposed to a variety of problems, which, according to the text, is a brilliant way to review. My studying habits will be adjusted to
During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. Again, the journey was long, but I will be forever grateful for the things that I, and all of my peers have gained from this
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
As the dull scent of chalk dust mixes imperceptably with the drone of the teacher's monotone, I doodle in my tablet to stay awake. I notice vaguely that, despite my best efforts in the shower this morning after practice, I still smell like chlorine. I sigh and wonder why the school's administration requires the students to take a class that, if it were on the Internet, would delight Mirsky (creator of Mirsky's Worst of the Web), as yet another addition to his list of worthless sites. Still, there was hope that I would learn something that would make today's first class more than just forty-five wasted minutes... It wouldn't be the first time I learned something new from the least likely place.
As a soon to be graduating high schooler, I can say this class definitely gave me a dose of (that grown up word) independence. By focusing on the learning goals, I was able to see what changes I can make to create polished work. When I signed-up for this class, I assumed it would be easy and I was only taking it because I needed it to graduate; however, I can say that this class will help me in the future. There was no set requirement throughout the class, it was based on self-improvement. By making my own standards and being forced to make decisions, I definitely matured as a student. With this in mind, thank you for this valuable quarter and I can’t wait to advance in the future thanks to the learning goals and this overall
Some key points I was able to take away from today’s class time were the following:
When looking at not just this class but all of my classes and looking at how I have been approaching them versus how I should approach them it definitely puts my mind in a different perspective because I am a person that “strives for excellence” and if I am able to “ace” a class then I definitely try and do that but a lot of the time that doesn’t mean sitting there and actually learning the information it means
What is the most important concept that you learned in this class? Write this for a reader who is unfamiliar with the concept.
Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
This is where you will take what you discovered about how you learn best and put it into use. Maybe previously you had been relying on your professor’s notes when you are a visual learner. This means that you will align your teacher’s notes to diagrams and pictures in your textbook. Or if none are found take the extra step and use a search engine to find related pictures or even YouTube that can provide you with videos that explain concepts and ideas related to your studies. If you are an auditory learner this might mean that you read the information out loud to yourself. If you are a kinesthetic learner perhaps reading while standing will you remember more readily or putting into practice what your book is describing. As mentioned previously, as someone who learns best by reading and writing, I hand write my own notes even if the professor has provided me with theirs, and later on I compare and contrast both sets of
Adjusting learning and studying strategies can be a fast easy way to improve a college grade from a B to an A. Through studies of learning styles I have been able to decipher my learning types. I am a visual learner, have an integrated brain, meaning I use both hemispheres, and ranked highest in bodily-kinesthetic and logic-mathematical intelligence.
Several things have struck me as powerful lessons in the six weeks since I first entered this class. Though I have always known that I had experienced privilege throughout my life, I never realized how truly engrained that was in me until writing the first assignment. During that experience, I struggled with identifying ways that my heritage had impacted my development and approached it from more of an internal standpoint rather than an environmental one. Sitting in class and listening to my classmates’ experiences, I was struck by how much different their lives have been in comparison to mine. Being able to put myself in their shoes even for a moment was a much-appreciated exercise in empathy. This is an example of our sixth learning objective:
Professor Stuart used a lot of discussions in the class. Everyone in class offered their opinion on all the material we encountered during the course. The class discussions contributed to helping me learn because it provided me with extra information and different viewpoints of how others interpreted the material. Also, we ended up going to the library and taking a tour. This experience added to my learning in this course because it taught me how to find the proper materials in the library and how to accurately benefit from the sources available in the library. Another contributing factor was the individual conferences scheduled by the professor. The conference contributed because the teacher discussed the current grade I had in that class and helped me understand what I needed to do to improve my academic writing along with my grade. The Prezi PowerPoints encouraging my learning by providing me with accurate information, further helping me understand the underlying material. Peer review also played a role in my learning because it allowed us to get outside ideas or criticism for our paper, allowing us to fix the mistakes, before turning it in. In addition to all these contributing factors, the hupomnemata really benefited me the most. The hupomnemata is a journal used for writing down notes on the material and some things the professor said in
All my life my parents have always pushed me to do my best in school. Always telling me to get an education so that I can have a better life than they did. Both of my parents never graduated college. My mom is a housewife meanwhile my dad has two jobs both of which are fast food restaurants. Even though my parents may always motivate me into doing good in school it is up to me if I actually try.
I attribute this to a few changes to my studying style: First I reread my notes, this helped information sink in with greater effectiveness than the act of passively copying notes down as I do in class. Furthermore when I was retaking my notes I would find
