I see the world as my community, and I take responsibility of making the world better than what it was. For me to receive this scholarship it will reduce an educational barrier, this scholarship will make college seem less of a dream and more of a reality. I want to be a blessing to others and by furthering my education I will be equipped with the necessary knowledge to tackle the world. I believe college prepares you for a world that is yet to come and I plan to use the lessons I learned to overcome the corruption in the world.

Social service professionals work to address the problem of human trafficking in a number of ways. Social workers are unique in their approach to this issue because they can address it from a number of angles. For example, social workers concentrate on both the individual victim as well as their social and economic situation which distinguishes it from other professions such as counseling (Palmer, 2010). Social workers meet the needs of human trafficking victims according to the principles outlined in the National Association of Social Worker’s Code of Ethics. (Palmer 2010). Nancy Palmer (2010) notes, that despite some similarities, human trafficking victims have “more complex and wide-ranging service needs” than those who suffer from related criminal acts. (p.48). Education is an important aspect of a social workers job not only to be aware of the problem and of the appropriate standards of action but also to recognize potential victims. Stotts & Ramey’s (2009) research shows, “it is entirely possible for a counselor to come in contact with a victim of trafficking without knowing it. Situations in which counselors are most likely to come into contact with a potential victim include homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, or crisis hotlines” (p.44). Social workers who suspect a possible victim can confirm through the National Trafficking Resource Center as well locating local services available to sufferers. If the victim is in immediate danger then social service workers notify local law enforcement (Stotts & Ramey, 2009). Once victims are identified, then social workers turn to meeting their physical and psychological needs by providing mental and health care to individuals and groups. In today’s society, where there is political and civil instability in the nations of the world, many citizens become subject to human trafficking. Human trafficking has rapidly grown into a transnational issue. Transnational crimes are often a result of an organized criminal group. These criminal groups quickly exploit the citizens of an unstable country and will send them to other countries while using upgraded technology and the rise of global trade to their advantage. Aside from human trafficking, it also can involve the movement of firearms, vehicles, drugs, or human body parts. Many believe that human trafficking is slavery of the modern-day. Many nations have come together to work on ways to prevent and protect those subject to trafficking.

Human Trafficking has become a major issue in Europe, especially in Bulgaria, which is at its pinnacle for poverty rankings. Another reason Bulgaria is said to be a “paradise” in human trafficking is because of the collapse of the socialist regimes in the late 1980s. Americans don’t hear about the subject and problems of trafficking as much, so not much is understood in the logistics and why it’s such a problem. Innocent women and children are constantly being taken and put into an abominable world of forced sex and labor. Society needs to fight against these traffickers. Law enforcement needs to enforce more discrepant punishments to those involved in the trafficking of human beings, and increase cooperation, coherence and visibility in human trafficking in both destination and transit countries. Help needs to be provided for people who have been trafficked and start a plan to stop any future victims of trafficking. The demand for cheaper products in Europe has rose, therefore increasing the amount of human trafficking. If more countries refused to buy such products, the demand for slavery would decrease, and the Human Trafficking statistics would then decrease.
Humanity has adapted to human trafficking in order to create beneficial rewards for themselves. Human trafficking is the trading of humans among other humans. People used this crime for sexual slavery, forced labor, and for the extraction of organs. Human trafficking crimes commonly are the effect of places needing resources. In order to receive these resources, they need workers so they force upon others to make profit for a small price.
I was completely astonished when I realized how unacknowledged people were about human trafficking. Human Trafficking is known as “the illegal movement of people, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation.” Here at Austin High School I surveyed six local teachers to test their knowledge on human trafficking. I was shocked by how little these teachers knew about this horrifying topic thats happening around the world. Out the the six teachers that took my survey I was surprised that each teacher missed around two to three questions. It was said that close to 700,000 to 2 million people are globally trafficked each year, and out of those thousands are trafficked within the United States. Human Trafficking preys
Country to country, person-to-person, human trafficking is becoming a bigger and bigger issue all across the globe, including right here in the United States. Human trafficking is said to be a form of modern-day slavery, subjecting its victims to commercial sex, debt bondage, and forced labor through force, fraud, or coercion. There are often no easily identifiable victims as they come in all ages, genders, and races. There are said to be at least 2.4 million victims of human trafficking across the globe at any given time, leading to profits of $32 billion for the criminal masterminds behind such trafficking operations, making it the second most lucrative criminal industry behind narcotics. Despite the abundance of victims, it is estimated that fewer than 30% of all countries report at least 10 trafficking convictions a year, and 20% of countries do not even have an offense for trafficking. An additional 20% of countries have an offense for trafficking but still report no convictions of the offense. Without an organized coalition to help prevent such atrocities, it is left up to national governments to come up with solutions for their respective nations, and many governments do not possess the know-how or effort needed to combat these crimes.

However there are many different forms of human trafficking and one that has caught my eye is the form called sex trafficking. Amid a storm of controversies including gay marriage, state data hacking, and a heated debate on the Confederate Flag, South Carolina’s media has paid little attention to the pressing issue of human trafficking. Perhaps this is due to the viewpoint of many Americans that human trafficking is a third world problem far removed from them and the people that they care about (Archer). This simply leaves them unconcerned, and the media cannot sell topics that people are not upset or in an uproar over. However America, including South Carolina, is not exempt from this type of human rights abuse. Without proper recognition of the importance and prevalence of this issue from the general public, human trafficking cannot be solved even when the government takes combative action. This is the case of South Carolina legislators, who in November 2012, had House Bill 3757 signed by Governor Nikki Haley to go into effect on December 15th, 2012 (Conley). House Bill 3757 is one of the most promising pieces of anti-human trafficking legislation ever turned into law with many beneficial effects and ideas, but even it is not without its issues and areas for potential improvements.
Human trafficking is a worldwide issue affecting many individuals; the Department of States estimated that about 600,000 to 800,000 people are taken across borders each year and two to four millions of people being victimized within their own country (Siskin & Wyler, 2010). The majority of trafficking victims are forced into sexual exploitation, however many are also used for labor. Although there is a current US policy that addresses anti-trafficking legislation, the problem of victim identification still persists. The failure to adequately tackle this phenomenon, paired with a concern over human rights, has prompted debates over who is considered a victim. There needs to be a more effective way to eradicate the dangers of human trafficking.

Human trafficking is a form of slavery, forcing victims to engage in sexual activities and labors against their will. These activities can be taken place through force, fraud, or constraint. Human trafficking is not just affecting one group of people, it is a worldwide issue, affecting all different ages, genders, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Human trafficking is such an immense problem, apprehending the true size, knowing how to help, and how to keep the issue from reoccurring. Human trafficking is and is still becoming such a serious issue that something needs to be done about.

Human trafficking is a plague afflicting most modern societies; men, women and children are trafficked for sexual slavery and cheap labor against their wills.
