It was a hot, Thursday afternoon. So hot you could burn your hand by touching a window. So hot, you could fry an egg on the sidewalk. Three weeks from now was the best day in 2th grade, field day. Today we were picking relay teams The relay was the largest event in field day and everybody wanted a good team. I had six people on my team. 4 would run the relay, and 2 would be cut. Since I was the team captain, I had the luxury of making the cuts. The two people who I thought we should cut, Chris and Hemanth, started to cry and yell. Our coach came over and told us to have a race, the two losers would be cut. Unfortunately, the same two people, Chris and Hemanth, lost and Chris started to cry even more. Out of frustration I said, “Its
not my fault you’re slow!” Because of this, Chris didn’t come to field day and he actually left the school afterwards. I also got detention. At this point I was feeling awful and disappointed at myself. I learned to restrain myself from saying things that will hurt people’s feelings. I also learned that some people are more sensitives than others and you really have to pay attention to them.
First, Even though it was cold, I took of the jacket during lunch and played kickball in a thin shirt, my arms feeling like braille from goosebumps. But when i returned to class i slipped the jacket on and shivered until i was warm. I sat on my hands, heating them up,while my teeth chattered liked a cup of crooked dice. Finally warm, I slid out of the jacket but a few minutes later put it back on when the fire bell rang. We paraded out into the yard where we,the sixth graders, walked
It was almost time to leave when we rode our final rides. “Let’s ride the Fahrenheit one more time.” I said. We walked to the line and rode that one last time for the day. I walked to the car with all my friends behind me. We were all so tired as we hopped in the car. It was a great day at Hersheypark. One of our favorite roller coasters didn’t work, but we still had
At the start of the afternoon, everybody just wished they were at the beach. By the end, all we could think about was how much fun we had playing board games. After Mom won for the hundredth time, we decided it was time for dinner. The smell of hotdogs and hamburgers floated throughout the house. Laughing, talking, more laughing, and even more talking echoed around us.
The horn blew and the game started, Dedham won the face off and is running down the field at a faster pace than I was used to. They shot the ball! I couldn’t move my stick quick enough to save it, so I threw my body in front of it and got hit right in the shoulder. It hurt a lot, but what I hadn’t realized was that it hit my shoulder and reflected ten feet away from the net where my player caught it and ran down the field and scored. The other team didn’t know what hit them. It was the half now and the score was three to nothing in our favor. Our couch told us that we needed to keep up the good work.
The poem "Summer" by Dean Myers uses figurative language throughout to convey the simple joys experienced during a hot summer day. By using repetition and imagery to create a scene for his readers to experience and understand his message. I chose this poem because it reminded me of my summer experiences that are similar to this one depicted by Mr. Myers.
As I sat in the boiling hot sun, the heat that had overwhelmed me throughout the day surpassed. I was engulfed by Lu Paul, a native Hawaiian advocate who was telling me the story of how Native Hawaiians loss their rights. “How did my people become a minority in their own land?” he asked me inquisitively. I found myself making many connections with this man’s story and my own. As he answered my questions about inequality in his community, he began to speak of many things that I had witnessed in my life, that I thought only my own culture experienced. “My people need to fight for equal education, language rights, and employment”, he stated firmly. It was in this moment I began to broaden my perspective of inequality and minority rights. This along with the many other field experiences I had during my semester abroad, help shape my desire to attend law school and work both nationally and abroad in civil and human rights.
It was the day of May 23. The flowers were blossoming and the birds were chirping. The trees were swaying in unison with the cool breeze. The kids were coming out of school, happy it was their last day, laughing and playing as their parents were talking. Most of the students were talking about the run and were wondering what they ran the mile in. Henry was not wondering, he was running home to drop off his backpack and start running.
It was two days until the first game of my last high school football season. My team and I were going to play Bayfield, a battle we had persistently prepared for since the last game of our junior year. The sun was beating on my pads, radiating the heat to make practice seem even worse. I was exhausted and looking forward to the end of my last sweat poring practice for the week. Our team was repetitively executing plays to make sure they were like second nature to us on Friday.
Finally Friday came. The tournament lasted for about three hours, peppered with constant complaints, arguments, and threatened fist fights. To my own disbelief, we lost -- by one point! For the rest of the night I rationalized our loss by creating stories of how they must have cheated, accented by remarks about the character blemishes of their mothers. I just kept saying that we were still the best and it didn't matter that we had lost. By the end of the night no one was speaking to me, not even my partner in the competition. I finally snuck off and went home. All the way, I could feel myself choking on ...
I remember the last time I was sick and how it interfered with my daily activities. My day started as usual, I ate breakfast and got dressed for work. I arrived at work and went about my usual customer service duties. By mid-morning, I remember feeling dizzy, hot and a bit nauseous. I took two Advil hoping to get rid of whatever bug I had picked up. Unfortunately, the Advil did not help. Not feeling any better, I had to leave work early. The customer service calls I couldn’t complete were given to my coworker. By the time I arrived home, I was coughing, sneezing, and fighting the strong urge to vomit. Even though I was not feeling well, I still had to make dinner for my son and feed our two cats. I wanted to cook chicken with onions and peppers
It all started in Hawaii, my family had just been stationed there for a duty station as my father was in the military. I was absolutely ecstatic about living on an island where most people only vacationed. It was a huge change from living in Texas where it was dry and humid to tropical paradise, it was so amazing and the food was so multi-cultural that you could try anything. The waterfalls and hikes were my favorite part and the beaches. North Shore was the beach you surfed on the most, and it was just breathe taking as the water is so clear and blue that you can see the sand on the shore line. Hawaii was just so awesome and then I started working at a video game store called Game Stop which I loved since I am an avid gamer and could share my excitement with other gamers.
Two years later and I still remember the day like it was yesterday. I came into work just like any other day, irritated to be there but still chugging along. This day started out no different than any other, the building smelled slightly of disinfectant and bleach, just enough to make my nose tingle for the first few minutes of being there. It was slammed at the plasma center, the lobby was packed to the point that the donors were standing so close to each other with very little elbow room. I moved quickly, setting up the plasma machines and getting needles stuck into donor's arms. Every time I got that red flash of blood in the needle and started the machine with no issues, I was happy. It meant that I could move on to the next donor and make progress on the line. After
It was November 1st and it was the day of my last volleyball game. I ran into my friend Eri and we started talking about the game later that day. It was against Tunkhannock. They were the best volleyball team from our area, and wouldn’t you know it on our senior night we had to play against them. Senior night was the one night where the seniors were recognized, whether they were good or not. The whole day the team was joking about how much we would lose by against our rival team. In a game to fifteen we thought we would end up owing them points.
Who knew a mouse could make all of my wildest dreams come true? Imagine being a child, and being told that you are about to spend the day at “The Happiest Place on Earth.” To any four year old, a day filled with candy, adventurous rides, and even Mickey Mouse himself sounds like paradise. To this day, I am filled with the same excitement going to Disneyland as I was fifteen years ago. Even driving to the parking deck has some sort of magic only Disney could pull off. My first time at Disney was filled with wonderful rides, my loving family, and memories I would keep close to my heart forever.
It was a gloomy Tuesday despite the fact that it was late August. I had missed the first day of school because I always hated the idea of introductions and forced social situations during those times. I hated my particular school ever since I started as a freshman the
