It is inevitable that everyone’s high school experience will be different. For most people, high school is about having fun and enjoying their last few years before they are forced out into the cold, dark world. However, for the rest, it is about expanding their knowledge potential and gaining skills to fight off everyday battles. My high school adventure was a mixture of the two. My general physics teacher had a habit of making my classmates and I stand as soon as he walked in the room. Every morning he would tell us, “remember children, the reason I have you stand is to show respect to the person better than you.” He acted as though he ruled the world with a flaming spear. My high school career was filled with terror. I come from Bedford, Indiana; a small town that is about the size of a quarter. On the first day of my sophomore year, my cousin allowed me to ride with him to what the locals call “the mansion on the hill.” The school had three floors, two above ground, and one below. The building itself covered six acres. The sports fields added another four acres. The previous year had ended the three-year construction schedule. Most of the school was brand new. As we walked in, the sight of people running around, and the sound of teenagers screaming at the top of their lungs about the new school year, made me think we had just walked through the gates of hell. My freshman year ended poorly. I was not the worst student, but I was not the best either. I was too caught up in the new high school experience and allowed my grades to fall. As I walked to my first class, I just kept telling myself that this year was going to be different. I was going to put all of my focus into my schoolwork. My plans were to attend the IU School o... ... middle of paper ... ...t that usually consisted of reading an entire chapter and completing the questions at the end of each chapter, which was due the following day. All of his tests were well over one hundred questions with three essays. It took three and a half days to complete his exams. As the year went on, the class got even harder and he grew to be an even more demanding instructor. Looking back, I am glad I took the class and I do not think I would change it if I could. It was hard at the time, but I gained the skills needed to take on college. His class better prepared me for professors that do not accept anything less than the best. I ended my high school physics class with a “B” average. I was horrified from what I had to go through to get that grade but at the same time, I was happy that I took the class. He made me realize that life is a lot like his class, tough and unfair.
Making the transition from middle school to high school is a huge stepping stone in a teenager’s life. High school represents both the ending of a childhood and the beginning of adulthood. It’s a rite of passage and often many teens have the wrong impression when beginning this passage. Most began high school with learning the last thing on their mind. They come in looking for a story like adventure and have a false sense of reality created through fabricated movie plots acted out by fictional characters. In all actuality high school is nothing like you see in movies, television shows, or what you read about in magazines.
High school was not a completely dreadful experience, but I did not get a really an exceptional education. As I entered high school, I thought it would be a whole new exciting chapter in my life. I started out as an involved student, and went through all of the Advance Placement and Honor classes, and managed to be at the top 12% of my class. In high school, I basically placed myself to enjoy it; I joined all of the extra curricular activities I was interested in. I was in band, tennis, swimming, dance team, and Key Club. Sometimes I was at school for about fourteen hours a day, four times a week.
I’m actually kind of shocked I could write about recovery because it is a topic with a special meaning to myself. But, I found it easier to write about my own experience with a negative event this time, and I believe it is because I grew as a writer. I saw the value the personal testimony adds to a piece, and thus I could add my own story.
Over the course of my childhood I faced an obstacle of my identity as a child, I was becoming everyone else image of me instead of creating my own portrait. Unfortunately, I began to dress, talk, and behave like the people around me, I became a product of my environment. Myself started to change I gained a reputation of this little girl with a careless attitude, and a malicious looking face. I wasn’t being recognized by my own family members, and it started to affect my relationship at home. I started slacking in my studies, and just started diminishing myself and my personality. The issue was focused in middle school when I joined the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Scholars after school team. I was a fanatic about learning about
Freshman year of high school careened past my very eyes before I had the maturity to fully comprehend the knowledge and life experience that was being imparted to my young impressionable intellect. The somewhat nebulous idea of high school loomed before me, acting as both a mirage and a reality. The atmosphere itself was cramped. Every detail about the school was small, building size, classrooms, the student population. Yet in a broader sense I was overwhelmed by the enormousness of the task that lay before me. I was more concerned with surviving the first year than with anything else.
I didn’t know what to expect of high school as I sauntered in the doors as an incoming high school freshman. In my first couple of weeks of school, I learned that it was basically like middle school, just a little stricter with different teachers and a different locker. I asked myself “how bad could it be?” Turns out,
I am an undocumented student at UC Davis. When I am asked a simple question such as, "describe your personal experiences", I ask myself: Where do I begin?
“High school is tough.” That’s what I was always told. Although, freshmen year was easy for me, I went to East Brunswick VoTech. I woke up at eight and left school at three thirty. All of my friends went to our district high school so I didn’t get to see them much. They also got out of school an hour and a half before I did. The workload was not so bad and I felt a sense of purpose. Then sophomore year came and I decided to transfer to district. I figured I’d get to see all my friends again and there’d be a few differences from VoTech but nothing I couldn’t handle. Oh, how wrong I was. The workload was immediately double what I did in VoTech, maybe even triple. I tried to stay afloat in the sea of work but was easily overwhelmed by it all.
Handling adversity is something that all people must do throughout their lives, but it is the ways in which individuals approach adversity that sets us apart. There are two contrasting ways in which you can respond to adversity: 1) you can either curl up into a ball and accept the outcome as it is 2) you can take control of the situation and work hard to make the resulting outcome in your favor. I faced adversity within sports when I was diagnosed with a physical disorder as a child.
I envision high school as an essential stepping stone for everyone. The era where every individual lacks the complete confidence in defining who they are or what they want to be. The four years of high school was the moment and opportunity to seek the interests that stood out to me the most. The experiences you make and the people you associate with are a crucial part of finding yourself.
High school is meant to be the time of your life, but for most seniors just like me it can be some of the most emotional and crazy time. The things in my past make me who I am today, and the things I do now are the first footsteps into the future. I’ve learned a lot about myself in these past four years, and I still have so much learning to do. This is my high school story; the good, bad, and the ugly.
My high school experience has been a very challenging and exciting 4 years. I have learned many things that will help me in life and I feel confident that I am ready for whatever obstacle I may face. There is a point in everyone’s life when they step back and realize “I can’t do this anymore, it’s ruining my life”. Many of my friends have started smoking cigarettes while drinking at a very young age, and continue to use this drug currently and don’t realize the affect it has on their future. While I have been smart enough to avoid smoking, I haven’t been as wise at making decisions when it comes to drinking. The amount of partying I’ve done in college has taken over my life, and has had a huge impact on my grades. Changing my drinking habits and continuing to avoid cigarettes will enable me to be the best I can be for the rest of my college experience.
It was dark that night, I was nervous that this dreadful day was going to get worse. Sunday, October 23, 1998 I wanted to start writing this to tell about the weird things i’m starting to see in this new neighborhood. Gradually I keep seeing pots and pans on the sink suddenly move to the floor. I would ask my sister but she is out with my mom and dad getting the Halloween costumes. When they got home I didn’t tell them what I saw because i've seen Halloween movies and I have to have dissimulation otherwise the ghost will come out and get me first. October 24, 1998 I think I got a little nervous yesterday with the whole ghost thing. 12:32pm, Went to eat lunch with the family today and I go to get my coat. I heard the words furious and madness,
Time flies so fast. Looking back, my high school is just like a movie, a lot of things happened. High School is four years of growing up and probably a time in your life where you go through the most changes. In high school you are able to discover yourself and find out who you are as a person. Each year is special and unique in their own way. My journey through high school was a tough one, especially because I decided to not only focus on academic work but also to invest quality time in extra curriculum activities. I wanted more than just academic excellence; I wanted to be a leader, I wanted to add value to every aspect of my life, I wanted a rounded education and not just mere schooling. My success story is what I will like to share with you; how I really made it and how this defines my personality. My journey in High School was scary, exciting, and successful.
