It was 2 months after Auggie’s graduation and everyone was getting supplies for the new school year at beecher prep. As everyone walked to their homeroom Auggie saw his best friend, Jack Will. “Hey Jack,” yelled Auggie as he walked to Jack “Hey Auggie, last night was crazy,” Jack Will exclaimed. The night before Jack Will had gone over to August’s house to play video games, they had played the entire story of Lego Batman 3:Beyond Gotham! When Jack got to Auggie’s house they started playing it right away, at first they were confused but then, they were extremely good. After, they finished the game they went free-roaming and got the rest of the heroes they couldn't get. As the students put their back packs down and picked a seat the teacher,
Mr. Madriz, explained the rules. “Alright, hi kids i’m Mr. Madriz, I will be your homeroom teacher this year,” said Mr.Madriz “We are going to go over the rules you must follow in my class.” After Mr. Madriz explained his rules he went into roll call, after he called all the kids they went to recess. At recess Auggie hung out with Jack Will, Amos, Henry, and Miles. When Auggie had all his classes he headed to lunch. He got his lunch and headed to the “Summer Table.” “Hey Summer,” Auggie said excitedly “How was your summer?” “Hey Auggie,” Summer replied “My vacation was great we went to Paris!” “Cool!” When Jack, Amos, Miles, and Henry got to the table they started eating. They also told each other about their summer and where they went. About ten minutes later they heard screaming and saw kids falling and getting food thrown at them. “What’s happening,” Auggie asked “My ears hurt!” “There’s a food fight,” Summer said “Lets join in!” The friends started joining in and started throwing apples, milk, and their pizza they got for lunch. Somebody hit August with an apple in the face and he went unconscious. Nobody noticed until Amos looked back and saw him lying on the floor. He told the others and they dragged him out of the cafeteria into the hallway. “Auggie wake up,” Summer said anxiously “You got knocked out by and apple!” Auggie woke up and went to the bathroom to wash his face then came back. “I never want to have food fight again,” said August with a huge red bump with an outline of an apple on his forehead.

Watching a film, one can easily recognize plot, theme, characterization, etc., but not many realize what basic principle lies behind nearly every story conceived: the hero’s journey. This concept allows for a comprehensive, logical flow throughout a movie. Once the hero’s journey is thoroughly understood, anyone can pick out the elements in nearly every piece. The hero’s journey follows a simple outline. First the hero in question must have a disadvantaged childhood. Next the hero will find a mentor who wisely lays out his/her prophecy. Third the hero will go on a journey, either literal or figurative, to find him/herself. On this journey the hero will be discouraged and nearly quit his/her quest. Finally, the hero will fulfill the prophecy and find his/herself, realizing his/her full potential. This rubric may be easy to spot in epic action films, but if upon close inspection is found in a wide array of genres, some of which are fully surprising.
The Hero’s Journey is a basic template utilized by writers everywhere. Joseph Campbell, an American scholar, analyzed an abundance of myths and literature and decided that almost all of them followed a template that has around twelve steps. He would call these steps the Hero’s Journey. The steps to the Hero’s Journey are a hero is born into ordinary circumstances, call to adventure/action, refusal of call, a push to go on the journey, aid by mentor, a crossing of the threshold, the hero is tested, defeat of a villain, possible prize, hero goes home. The Hero’s Journey is more or less the same journey every time. It is a circular pattern used in stories or myths.
What is a hero? To our understanding, a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, and writer wrote The Odyssey. In this novel he talks about The Heroes Journey which are twelve different stages of adventure known as the Ordinary World, the Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting the Mentor, Crossing the Threshold, Test/Allies/Enemies, Approach to the Inmost Cave, Ordeal, Reward, the Road Back, Resurrection, and the Return With The Elixir. The Odyssey is about a legendary hero named Odysseus, who fought among the Greeks in the battle of Troy and went through the stages of The Heroes Journey. Odysseus lived in Ithaca, Northwest of Greece, with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.
The majority side with Julian, as he spent the break turning other male students against Jack. Auggie and Summer, as well as Reid, Max G., and Max W., never forsake him. Julian writes cruel notes and places them in their lockers, while Julian’s mother begins expressing her opinion that Auggie doesn’t belong at Beech Prep publicly. The situation improves slightly overtime. Jack and Auggie write notes of their own to place in Julian’s locker, and some of the students become tired of Julian’s antics. Mr. Tushman, the rest of the faculty, and most of the parents disagree with Mrs. Albans. Via’s boyfriend, Justin, even intervenes when he witness a group of kids bullying Jack. The biggest change in dynamics, however, occurs on a field trip. The students travel to a nature reserve for a weekend camping trip. Jack and Auggie wonder off during an outdoor movie and find themselves in the cornfield where they encounter students from another school. The seventh graders, especially one named Eddie, are viciously cruel to Auggie because of his appearance; they call him Gollum, Freddy Krueger, among other names. Jack defends him and tries to push his way through, but the older students won’t let them pass. Other students from Beecher Prep hear the commotion and investigate. Henry, Amos and Miles, members of Julian’s pack, also defend Auggie. The situation escalates when Eddie gets physical by grabbing and pulling Auggie down to the ground. Amos rams into Eddie to prevent further injury to Auggie and so they could escape. Henry grabs a hold of Auggie to help him run with the others. When they finally stop, the students rejoice in surviving the incident with high fives, even with Auggie. They befriend him and vow they will always defend him. Auggie is happy as he is now accepted by his

Yann Martel’s “Life of Pi” shows all three of the main elements of a hero’s journey: the departure, initiation and the return, helping the story to greatly resemble Joseph Campbell’s structure of a hero’s journey. Through the trials Pi has to face, he proves himself to be a true hero. He proves himself, not just while trapped on the lifeboat with Richard Parker, but also before the sinking of the Tsimtsum. His achievement to fulfill the heroic characteristics of Campbell’s model are evident as he goes though the three stages.
