Free Essays - My Story I twist the clown's face so that it evolves into my happy face reflecting in the bathroom mirror. I hold authority over my creation. I sculpt friendships out of an ideal. I mold beauty from impossible dreams. I chisel acceptance from my imagination. I fool myself every day. My perpetual game misleads me. I am willing to be cheated into happiness. I'm happy because my story is believed. I will my smiling image to hold true. Every time I replay the image in my mind, its holes are filled in, its attached authenticity is stronger, and my faith in it is renewed. But the mirror merely shows an unreliable reflection of myself. I have never seen me. I can only guess at who I am. The author of my story should be one who is uncluttered with self-pity, unmarked with greedy desires, cleansed of dependence, and has her feet planted firmly on the ground. I'm still trying to find my author, trying to peel away the fermented shelter that I'm crouching behind. I'm there, underneath the varnish, shouting for help to be rescued from the sugary syrup I've created from seeping in. I'm not going to pull me out, however. I've decided that digesting the sticky syrup will be good for me. The clown reminds me daily that my smile must be firmly stuck onto my face-it's part of the rules of the game. Therefore, I cannot tell you what my story is. I haven't hired anyone to write it yet. ...I'm not sure if I am prepared to bring my daydreams, illusions and visions to life. I'm scared that my imagined story won't be better than the story I threw out. If my creation fails, what will I have to keep me waking up and breathing? My images, ultimately, control me.
Every person thinks about a certain question at least once in the lifetime. The question that is most thought about is, ¨Who am I?¨ Many people would respond with their name, their parents, or where they live. Others use their reputation, their occupation, and their looks. At last, a few others identify themselves by their significant actions they have done. In some stories, characters try to find out who they really are. In the short stories ¨Fish Cheeks¨ by Amy Tan, ¨Two Kinds¨ by Amy Tan, and ¨Papa´s Parrot¨ by Cynthia Rylant, the characters learn about their identities through significant moments.
MG patients have only one-third of the normal numbers of acetylcholine receptors which causes weak and easily fatigued muscles. The muscles under voluntary control are affected. The heart muscles, which are under involuntary control, are not affected. In MG generally, the muscles that control the eye and eyelid movement are affected first, causing the eyelids to sag. Some MG patients may develop double or blurred vision. When only the eye muscles are affected, the disease is known as Ocular Myasthenia. Disease symptoms affecting the facial muscles leads to limitations of facial expressions. Victims have difficulty smiling and expressing emotions on their face.
The patients’ symptoms and signs usually stabilize or improve after three years. The prognosis of myasthenia gravis has improved drastically with the introduction of treatments with the majority of patients becoming symptom free if they are adequately treated. However, most patients do have to remain on tablets for life as the symptoms generally return if they stop the medication
An occurrence at Owl Creek by Ambrose Bierce shows why the imagination required to vividly daydream is critical in making it through impossible times. Having an imagination may seem childish at first thought, however when faced with incredible obstacles or situations having an imagination is needed. The majority of the human race of course has an imagination; it is the levels and capability of said imagination that differs among us. the only people who are known to have limited to no imagination at all are those who have low levels of openness to experience on the five-factor personality scale of psychology. An analytical and pragmatic mind looks at the situation and sees it as it presents itself, thus staying in the moment. It is the day-dreamers who are able to escape the situation at hand and go
Davinci, the Black Death, Matthias, they all have shaped life in one way or another. The Renaissance is one of the most unique and rich periods of time in our world history. From about 1300 to 1600 the doctors had a modern, yet old school knowledge of medicine and illnesses. The artist of this time helped shape our culture today and give us a great understanding of the time period. The Rulers of this time were some of the most influential in developing the renaissance. The Renaissance is one of the most unique and rich periods of time in our world history.
Having that exhilarating dream, or terrifying one makes me wonder about dreams. The wonder of dreams grows by the day. I continually ask myself why do I dream; what causes me to dream? Where do our dreams originate and occur? Do my dreams have meaning? The answers to these questions are a little complex. The answers I have to give are very sophisticated and need to be thoroughly thought out.
“What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? An idea. Resilient... highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it's almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed - fully understood - that sticks; right in there somewhere.” (Inception. Christopher Nolan. Emma Thomas. Film. Warner Bros Pictures.) And who can deny the ideas put into everyone’s mind that watched “Inception”? Begging the question, Is it possible to control and manipulate a dream or someone else’s.
Even though Carson countenanced several predicaments, he utilized knowledge from his experiences, and he gained strength from his faith in God. Paradoxes contributed to his outlook on life and his course of action that he used to manage life’s tribulations. He benefited from his situations by experiencing trust, persistence, hope, credence, and aspiration; he used these ideals in the operating room and to shape his perspective of the world. Carson’s life experiences were defined by motivation, dedication, and his faith. Carson’s contributions to society and the welfare of others created a legacy for younger generations to follow.
Imagination has been a topic of great inquiry within the therapeutic fields, and has been a crucial part of the relationship between society and healing. It has existed in many ways throughout theories and practices, while having various transformations back and forth between being seen as an effective path of therapy. This thesis emerged as a demanding question into what the imagination truly is.
Inspiration is a beautiful, globally beneficial function of the mind. However, without the motivation to pursue this potential and colour, it cannot succeed in the modern world. It is similar in the sense of a Two-ness which conflicts in the most toxic of ways. A want to explore, but an acute fear of the unknown will chain someone from their desires and allow someone to decay away from what they had once dreamt for themselves. How can a man or woman battle that which is battling itself? Not without power and dignity, mind you. I have explored my own Two-ness over the past few years. What I have discovered in my self-preservation is both eternally frustrating and lifechanging.
The hallmark symptoms for MG include: fatigued muscle weakness, a fluctuation of symptoms, and overly sensitive reactions to environmental stressors (Spillane et al. 2012; Gilhus et al. 2011). Patients usually have worsening symptoms near the end of the day, and about 10% of patients have another autoimmune disorder (Gilhus et al. 2011). Often the most severe cases of MG lead to myasthenia crisis, an acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation of the patient, though any patient can go into crisis (Spillane et al. 2012; Mao et al. 2010). One of the most common symptoms is drooping of the eyes, ptosis.
Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease that effects the skeletal muscles of the body at the neuromuscular junction. The 40th Edition of Gray’s Anatomy defines it as, “myasthenia gravis is essentially an autoimmune disease in which acetylcholine receptor proteins of neuromuscular junctions are attacked by autoantibodies.” (Gray’s). This chronic disease is characterized by muscles that fatigue quickly activity and gets better after rest. The muscles that are most often effected are those that control facial expressions, eyelids, chewing, swallowing, and talking, but sometimes those that control breathing, and movement in the neck and limbs are also impacted (“Myasthenia Gravis Fact Sheet,” 2010).
The act of smiling can has() many unknown benefits to an individual’s personal health and well-being. A 30-year study at UC Berkeley examined student’s yearbook photos and the nature of each person’s smile. Based on one’s smile, the researchers were able to determine the success of their marriage, score on an aptitude test, and how inspiring they would be to others. The sincerity and span of a person’s smile can also be used to predict their longevity. While the correlation between a smile and these variables may seem hard to believe, there is scientific evidence to prove why a smile can provide countless positive benefits. First, smiling suppresses the control we have on our facial muscles by releasing stress and tension and lowering one’s heart rate. It also provides a natural form of happiness by reducing stress-inducing hormones such as cortisol, dopamine, and adrenaline and increasing mood-enhancing hormones such as endorphins. Smiling also stimulates reward mechanisms by allowing us to fee...
Genetic engineering is the modification of an organism’s genes, to achieve a desired product. It is a likely possibility that in the future, this process will be used on humans. Many people think that genetic engineering is a good idea, but they are wrong because it can lead to even stronger mutations and will erase individuality.
These doubts get even deeper when dreams are to be compared to mental illnesses, or the use of drugs that alter the perception of reality. What is reality and what is invented by the mind? If the experiences are different, the line between awake life and dreams in these cases becomes thinner as the results appear...
