My Home Away from Home For some people visiting places of significance can be the substance for changing one’s outlook on life, recharging one’s emotional battery, or growing closer to one’s family member. These special places could have characteristics such as beauty, sentiment, or a connection to the person that causes them to constantly long to be there. It could be a place that has a special significance in the life of an individual. No place on earth has yet surpassed the beauty and relaxation of my special place. For me such a place exists in Hakalau, Hilo. I first visited Hakalau with my grandma when I was young, which is a memory I will treasure forever. It’s a place that my grandma was from and my mom spent her childhood vacations …show more content…
Now growing next to them was tall taro plants, fruit trees, and an abundance of colorful flowers. There is no sign of modern day twenty first century in this small town. Instead of being on a busy sidewalk being pushed by people in a hurry, or walking behind someone slow it’s just me the quiet road and maybe a few other people. I loved it being able to take my time walking around and taking in the beauty and feeling of true relaxation here. There aren’t any tall buildings in sight nor, can you hear cars honking at each other and ambulances or polices cars sirens every so often. Here it is quiet and peaceful. I don’t have to worry about anything here like I do back home at Honolulu such as no traffic or getting to places without having a headache or feeling rushed. Life here is slow like a lazy river drifting along, and there is this ambience of being in the 1960’s that can be noticed all over town. Houses still have rustic tin roofs, shops have hand painted DIY signs that say “bar” or “antique shop”, and there’s mom and pop stores that are still open. One of those shops which makes the best homemade cookies there. I decided to get like always the Mac Poi Chip, so crispy, light, and not too sweet. The people here are friendly who always take time to speak and smile whenever I talk with …show more content…
Another person is sitting on a white metal chair with a newspaper in hand at a table eating his breakfast consisting of eggs and fresh fruit. I decide to take a sat on a brown homemade wooden bench just right outside of this bread and breakfast resting my feet and waiting for my family to play catch up to me. Sitting here I can see everything and feel as though I’m in the heart of Hakalau feeling the true beauty of old Hawai’I here. There is people passing by on either foot or by a car slowly easing its way down the road. At this time, I can dream with my eyes open admiring the light blue sky and white cotton candy like clouds with green mountains in the back that look as if they are something you see off a painting. The smell of fresh gardenias and meditation incense brush my nose. There’s different style of old homes around and just to the side is a rainforest where if you listen carefully you can hear a waterfall. I can listen to the wind and hear the local aunty and uncles chat about what is new with this or that. I can watch the leaves and flowers on the tree move each time the gentle wind blows, and just off in the corner there’s a wind chime making its
Each person has a place that calls to them, a house, plot of land, town, a place that one can call home. It fundamentally changes a person, becoming a part of who they are. The old summer cabins, the bedroom that was always comfortable, the library that always had a good book ready. The places that inspire a sense of nostalgic happiness, a place where nothing can go wrong.
Imagine yourself sitting on a lava rock cliff, hearing the ocean pounding the rock wall below. The salty sea spray cools your lips and the taste tickles your tongue. Feeling the sun against your skin, it is cooled by the mix of mist and breeze that plays with the palm trees. You could say I grew up in a place most people can only daydream about. When most people hear of where I grew up all they can picture is paradise. There is so much more to the “Aloha State” than the stale beachside hotels covered in an abundance of hibiscus prints with pineapples around every turn. The people, food, and land are the heart of the Hawaiian Islands.
Place has a major impact on the persons comfort. We describe place with our interactions and the thinks we value in that location. The sense of place can be someone’s home, the beach, a lake, and the location of their first kiss. My special place is Table Rock trail in the Pickens, South Carolina. I knew this place was special to me because of the different interactions I experienced that not only created new memories but also resulted in me thinking about old memories. The most meaningful quote is from the novel Children, Youth, and Environments, “sense of place is the lens through which people experience and make meaning of their experiences in and with place” (Adams pg. 23). I will never forget the emotions I faced when reflecting next to the waterfall with nothing but nature surrounding me. Table Rock was a place that was meaningful and I sparked a connection to the location, which resulted in creating special
A quiet secluded place one can rest and relax, a place to get away from it
A place is not exactly a “place” unless it means something or has some previous value to someone. A “place” could be where hunter-gatherers collected berries and fished, but it could also be where a girl named Mary had her first hike. As show in these examples, a place’s history can be something as grand as where the Romans fought the Greeks, or it can be a place that offered a small, yet memorable personal experience. Thus, the size of a place’s history can be different from person to person. Nonetheless, the significant thing is that a “place” holds some meaning and value to someone who has been there physically or psychologically.
Sense of place is the “development of level of comfort and feelings of safety that are associated with a place” (Kopec, p. 62). These associations often translate into that desired sense of belonging, and allow individuals the ability to “develop feelings of attachment to particular settings based on combinations of use, attractiveness, and emotion” (Stokowski, 2002). Developing these psychological connections with certain places lends itself to the concept of place attachment, or, “a person’s bond with the social and physical environments of a place” (Kopec, p. 62). These places often hold deep meaning for people because their identities were established among their surroundings. This affiliation between a person and their place is often seen through personal connection, comfort, and security (Kopec, p. 131). Many people feel as though the place they are in should have its own “special character”, or an identity that defines it, and distinguishes it from other places (Kopec, p.1). Kopec states, “An environment’s distinct spatial features, how it compares with others, its connections to personal life paths, and its potential for change combine to affect the meanings places have for people”. An establishment of this sense of place identity ...
This morning I wake early from the light that creeps underneath my blinds and my bed next to the window. I wake floating on the streams of light, heated, like white wax spilled across the floor, dripping, soft. In bare feet I walk down the stairs, cold on the wood, and find my father in the kitchen, also awake early. Together, we leave the house, the house that my parents built with windows like walls, windows that show the water on either side of the island. We close the door quietly so as not to wake the sleepers. We walk down the pine-needle path, through the arch of trees, the steep wooden steps to the dock nestled in the sea-weed covered rocks. We sit silently on the bench, watch as the fog evaporates from the clear water. The trees and water are a painting in muted colors, silver and grays and greenish blue, hazy white above the trees.
If you ask anyone what home means to them more than likely you’ll get several different opinions. In my case home has never been a specific place it’s always been wherever my mom was! My Mother and I have been moving from place to place ever since I could remember.
There is only one place in this world I would go to find the meaning of life, my childhood home. In my memories, that house has always been my sanctuary. Safety brings a touch of tranquility, free of twisted negativity that would clear the way of finding the meaning of my life. My house opens a door to a whirlwind of deep love for everything it stands for and distaste for the way it looks. When you 're living in an unseemly house, surrounded by people who thinks its an eyesore, was when I learned the superficiality of the people around me. That house became my heaven as well as, my hell. I was caught between my appreciation for my own home and the approval of others, but as I grew up I found out what I should treasure more is the simple joys of life.
Everyone has a special place that people will never forget. Sometimes it is because there were places that people experienced great joy or comfort. A special place represents peoples’ special memories either good or bad. Memory will following people whole life, and store people’s heart deeper. Good memory will coming all time. My special place and my memory is my grandparent’s house; my grandparent’s house practically is my second home. I would never forget that special place because of things going on my grandparent’s house, which is symbolized by my grandparent’s love.
Fortunately, I wake every morning to the most beautiful sun lit house. I sit on my porch sipping coffee, while I drink in an atmosphere that steals my breath away. Rolling hills lay before me that undulate until they crash into golden purple mountains. Oh how they are covered in spectacular fauna, ever blooming foliage, and trees that are heavy with pungent fruit. Green it is always so green here at my house. Here where the air lays heavy and cool on my skin as does the striking rays of the sun upon my cheeks. I know in my soul why I choose to be here every day. Pocketed in all the nooks and crannies of these valleys and hills are stately homes, rich with architecture resplendent. Diversity is the palate here; ...
I think we all have a beautiful place in our mind. I have a wonderful place that made me happy a lot of times, years ago. But sometimes I think that I am the only person who likes this place and I'm asking myself if this place will be as beautiful as I thought when I will go back to visit it again. Perhaps I made it beautiful in my mind.
...autiful and exciting place. The water is unlike any other body of water that I had ever laid my eyes upon. Worthy of the nickname ‘God’s swimming pool”, it has a seemingly endless horizon that reaches as far as the eye can see. The sand is so fine and powdery and it amazes me at how it can change textures with just a little bit of water. Perhaps the most amazing part of the beach is the vast array of wildlife that inhabits the area. From fish to crabs, you will never see the same creature twice. Each animal has their own distinct characteristics which make it exciting to explore and try to find more. My favorite place in the world is definitely the beach and I highly recommend visiting and seeing it with your own two eyes. It is an infinite world of expression, a paradise of color. There is no possibility of disappointment when it comes to the serenity of the ocean.
