Today is the day! I finally got to go to a fire scene! My first fire scene! And it was a fatal fire scene! I know it is wrong to be happy that not only did someone’s house burn but also that someone died while it was happening, but it means that I can actually take what I have been learning and finally incorporate it into real life. DCI does not get called to every fire in the state of Wisconsin. They are actually only usually utilized for fires that arson or when there is a fatality present in the state. The day started by meeting Bos at a park and ride where we carpooled to the scene of the fire. It was in a different town than Madison. I thought I would be more bothered by the body and being in the house however, that wasn’t the part of the day that bothered me. The homeowner had a cat that also perished in the fire. However, instead of removing the body, everyone at the scene continued to walk on it. This bothered me too because I hold some much value in animals’ lives as well. However, I did not want to speak up about the possibility of moving it because it was my first fire investigation and I did not know what proper protocol was. So instead, I just stepped over the poor kitty. Also, the other thing that bothered me at the scene was seeing the victim’s shoe. While they were removing the body from the scene he lost one of his shoes in the yard. It was laying in the yard the whole time I was there, and I wanted to move it back in the house. It felt wrong for me to leave this man’s shoe out in the rain, even though I knew he wouldn’t be wearing it any time soon.
