Public transportation is one of those things that we trust will get us from point A to point B with no problems. We occasionally hear stories about planes crashing or trains derailing, but we shrug it off, thinking that it could never happen to us. These thoughts run through Luke’s mind as he arrives at the station. He puts the car in park and removes the keys from the ignition. Luke gets out of the car and heads toward the building, the air feeling as warm as it did the last time he was here. He pauses for a moment; it is days like this that he is reminded of that fateful day last summer. It was late June, and Luke and his friend Ben had just finished up their day in Chicago. The great city had so much to offer, and they were reluctant to …show more content…
Following the screams was a loud, ear-ringing, sound. Luke did not want to believe what he had just heard to be real. People began to scream and cry out louder as someone came up the stairs. One frantic passenger approached the man coming up the stairs, and he was quickly silenced. He fell to the floor, his body limp; the passenger had been shot. Luke had recognized this man, for he was part of the family that Luke and Ben had run past earlier. The gunman was in the upper level of the cabin, his gun pointed down the aisle towards the remaining passengers. Luke could see that the gunman was the conductor. He still had that glassy look in his eyes, but this time there was more; there was anger in his eyes. Luke had wondered what his motive could possibly be. Why would he do this? The conductor made his way down the aisle, executing anyone who moved even the slightest. By the time he had reached Luke and Ben, he had already killed three more passengers, bringing the death toll to four. He had turned toward Luke and Ben, with his gun aimed at them. The two of them just sat there, trembling at the thought of what the conductor was going to do. Instead, the conductor just gave them the same weak smile as before, and he continued down the aisle, executing more people as he
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is not the best method of transportation in the city of Toronto, because it’s unreliable, inconvenient, and unsanitary. First of all, the TTC is unreliable because of many delays. The TTC buses often come late and there are many subway breakdowns and signal problems. These problems can cause longer wait times and result in the rider being late. Additionally, the TTC is inconvenient because it is difficult for the rider to get to his or her destination without a few transfers. In addition, there are very few direct routes and limited area coverage. For example, there are some areas where passengers have to walk long distances just to get to the bus stop. These problems can result in many transfers and cause
Harrison Scott Key, who was published in Best Travel Writing 2014, wrote about his travels on one of America’s infamous modes of transportation, the Greyhound Bus. In “Fifty Shades of Greyhound”, Key begins his memoir by recalling the first time he had ever ridden on a greyhound. He wanted to go see West Yellowstone, Montana and despite his friends questioning his sanity and his mother believing that he will die, he left. The narrator returned several days later, promising his mother he would never do anything like that again, eighteen years later he broke that promise. He begins his essay in a Greyhound station in Savannah.
The New York City Subway System, or the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), has become the “life line” of New York City (NYC) since people are reliant on the subway system for commuting to different places within the city. One such person, who buys this fact, is a person by the name of SunDo K, who runs and owns a restaurant business in Cypress, California. He claimed in his profile on Yelp that, “One of the best part about New York City is traveling via the subway.” Now there are also acid twists and turns into this. Precisely there are many others out there whose judgment matches flawlessly the same with K. They find the MTA quite advantageous of there way of going around town, while there are other people, who find the system comparatively exasperating, and disappointing for its following: punctuality, fare, overcrowded, and filthiness. Though few peoples’ psyche has been launder by the term “detestation” for New York City’s subways (Tubes), they are the ones who are going to notice a hole in their pocket as other approach of transportation call for more money in addition to not being safety as well. One such example can be found at NYC’s taxi cab. Periodically few New Yorkers tends to believe that Tubes makes their ride trouble-free, efficient, inexpensive, as well as comfortable experience. Some people also trust the city’s subway as one of safest way of roaming around the city than other transportations. What’s more gossiping is the fact that, both safety and security happens to be Subway’s primarily concern according to the MTA.
The New York City Subway is one of the oldest public transit systems in the world, and Manhattan has its fair share of it, especially in the form of abandoned subway stations.Subways are great mean of transportation, with great historical and geographical value. Interborough Rapid Transit company built the first subway in 1904. Once upon a time, in a cabin far away, it was Halloween night October 31st 1973. A group of friends decided to go to a cabin in the woods to celebrate their favorite holiday together. Busses packed full of people were going to the party that me and Skyler had planned. We invited almost the whole school. Finally after hours of searching for our final destination we arrived. Skyler and I were the first to be at that raggedy torn down cabin. We brought the lights and the beers and the snacks , we spent hours and hours of decorating and setting up finally Andy showed up to help with all the heavy work.
’Chicago seemed an unreal city whose mythical house of slabs of black coal wreathed in palls of gray smoke. Chicago was very different then what he thought when Richard got there he found out it was not what he thought. But he meet some good people along the way but really didn’t know where they were being nice to him because he never knew what that was and still don’t know what it’s like to be loved or being
One day in Tennessee, I came to the rescue of my brother. We finally got to our cabin after eight hours of driving plus stops. Tennessee is really nice because there are mountains and lots of green trees. The waterfalls are beautiful, too. My family’s cabin had two rooms and three beds. It also had a hot tub on the deck and a great view. On the third day my dad, brother, dog, and I went on a walk on a path by rocky walls. On the way we saw a wooden wagon that was old. My brother and I got in it for my dad to take a picture. Suddenly, my brother got stung by a bee! It hurt his arm, which felt like a needle poking you in the arm. I walked him back up to our cabin where he could get the first aid-kit. I handed him medicine and a band aid, then
The man suddenly stood up and pleaded to the solider guarding him at gunpoint. “PLEASE! We’re not infected, I swear! You got to believe me!” To which the solider responded by slamming the butt of his rifle into the man’s head, demanding he remained on his knees. They two little girls were sobbing uncontrollably and everyone in the crowd looked on with anguish. Out of the blue, an officer with a hazmat suit on approached them. He pulled out what looked like a giant metal detector, except everyone knew he wasn’t searching for weapons. It had become so quiet that to this day John thought he could of hear the scurrying of the rats in the sewers below them. One by one he ran the metal rod over their heads until he heard a beep. He looked down to be met with the devastated expression the little girl
I received a voice mail today from Sean McKnight stating he has a meeting setup with Ken Barber and some other individuals on the executive board of Illinois Joining Forces (IJF). I felt it was my duty to inform the group about some important facts that Mr. McKnight is very good at hiding. I met Mr. McKnight during my time at NIU. I just served my time as the NIU Veterans Club president and decided it was time to let someone else take the helm. Matthew Galloway the current Veterans Club president introduced the club to Sean McKnight at a veterans club meeting. Sean came in and presented himself as a seasoned veteran’s advocate who has many connections throughout the state of Illinois and Washington D.C. He promoted his organization that he was starting Warriors Guarding Warriors as a revolutionary concept that has not been thought of as for yet throughout the veteran community. Finally, he offered his services to any veterans having trouble with VA benefits or the medical process. At the time we did not know that he was not officially certified to help veterans, and nor did he actually know the proper process or paper work needed to help our fellow veterans. Sean offered to be the Veterans Clubs mentor. The club held a vote and
On a cold winter’s night, a group of friends were heading to their friend Josh’s cabin in the middle of the woods on a mountain side. It was about a two hour drive from their home town of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. They all arrived around eight o’clock, but Josh had already been there for a couple of hours preparing the cabin for guests. Josh had prepared a full course meal for all of his friends prior to their arrival. When his friends walked through the doors, they were surprised to see that Josh had made a special delicacy for all of them. It was around ten o’clock when they had finished eating, and Marcus suggested they tell stories by the fire. It seemed they had eaten an entire cow, but Josh agreed with Marcus that everyone should gather around the fire. Julia went first and talked about her visit with her Uncle over the summer. Emily told a scary story about how a girl was brutally killed by a murderer. Simon asked, “ Is is okay if I go next?” Everyone nodded in agreement.
Moving from a highly diverse community to a less diverse community has to be the weirdest yet interesting culture shock I ever had to deal with. As a young child, I did not know about the outside world. I thought everyone rides the bus or the metro, graffiti on the wall is normal and traffic wouldn’t matter as much since everything I needed was within walking distance sometimes. There were shocking things I learned once I moved to Nebraska.
All my life ,I’ve always wanted to be someone in life who can actually make a difference to this world in a positive way. Ever since I was a little girl I pushed myself to always best I can be just . I lived in a town outside Los Angeles, California , it was called Van Nuys,California. The elementary school (Kittridge Elementary) I had went to was in a low income area, mainly spanish community had lived in the area I was living in at the time .I had a lot of friends (mainly mexicans) I focused a lot on being on time for school , staying on task in class, and finishing my homework. At such a young age I had felt such ambition and was doing very good for myself. At the age of 10 was when reality start to really hit me , even though I was very young I started to see things differently.
After countless hours of uncomfortable naps and tasteless meals between flights, we finally arrived at the unfamiliar land of America. Leaving all our dear friends and families behind, I was told that we came here in hope of a better future, my future specifically. I was never really socially active and at the time, English was a whole new concept that I have yet to understand. The inability to communicate with other makes it even harder for me to express myself and it mold my personality to become more antisocial than I ever was. There’s always this uneasy feeling that linger when someone talk to me and I cannot give them a response and it’s even harder to say something because I was afraid of making a mistake and make a fool out of myself.
“Nope, that’s wrong. Come on, you know this. The question isn’t that hard,” she grumbled in frustration. “Who’s next?”
The most challenging thing this year for me has been waking up and getting to school on time. I know what your thinking right now, thats it, getting up in the morning is the hardest challenge that you have endured this year. Well my answer to that is I’m not a morning person. In fact, I hate waking up early, I enjoy sleeping. When I sleep in I feel more refreshed, but if I sleep in too long then I feel as if i'm not motivated for the rest of the day.
