Personal Narrative Essay: How Volleyball Changed My Life

Have you ever thought you didn't like something, but then you tried it and loved it? That's how volleyball was for me. I played for the park district when I was younger, but I didn't enjoy it. “I really don’t want to play volleyball,” I told my mom over and over, “It hurts my arms to hit the ball.” was my main reason for not playing. Now that I think about it, that was a really bad excuse to not play. The problem was that my mom played in college and it's always been her favorite sport, so I knew that I would have to play when I got older. My mom told me that I would try it out, and if I didn't like it, I wouldn't have to play. Turns out, I actually love volleyball! So I tried out for my school's volleyball team, and I made it! We practiced for about two weeks before our first game, and let me tell you, it was pretty sloppy during that first week. When it came down to those last few practices, we were doing better and we were able to control our passes. A big accomplishment for us was reaching 15 passes while doing the figure 8 drill. It may seem small, but we all were very proud. Our first game went pretty well. We played hard, but ended up losing. We lost our second game too, but I’d say we did pretty good for only two weeks of practice beforehand. We finally one our third game against Aquinas, and the first thing out of our coach’s mouth when we went in the locker room was “Whoo!” We played well as a team and were able to win the game. My team and I just keep improving, and although we haven’t had much experience, we’re all right. Volleyball is now one of my favorite sports. I still love softball and basketball, but volleyball is definitely one of my main interests. It’s crazy how I didn’t really like volleyball at all, and now I actually love it! My mom was right, although I don’t like to admit it, and I think I’ll be playing volleyball for a while
