In a couple days it was the big day, the lottery. Only one person gets chosen a year, some towns around here have discontinued their lottery. Yes, I've thought about discontinuing the town's lottery too, but the demand from the townsfolk is too high. They love the lottery, I think old man Warner would have a heart attack if he found out that I decided to discontinue the lottery. He'd call me soft and childish for discontinuing it. Today, on this beautiful day, I am getting the black lottery box and slips of paper for the big day. Tomorrow I will get the box set up and ready. Ending the lottery sounds so amazing in my dreams, but there would be no way I would get away with ending it in this town. The surrounding towns that have ended up being so lucky to have such understanding townspeople. Today I am cutting up the paper into strips, then putting the black coal mark on one of the papers and putting all the slips into the box. I finished cutting up all the paper, it took longer than expected but it's still morning and I have plenty of time in the day. I don't know if I can bring myself to put the coal mark on the paper. What if that's how I end this old tradition, no mark means no one wins? But then I think of the outrage of the townsfolk. This is one of the only times the whole town is together. It wouldn't go well for me, especially on the day someone is supposed to win, I’d probably end up getting the prize myself if they all found out I didn't put a mark in the box.
