An unexpected journey
One evening my father came home with multiple forms that needed to be filled out. One was for my mother and the second one was for my father to complete. He put the forms in the living room table and said “I have good news!”My dad’s face lit up like christmas tree, his smile was ear to ears, his face was glowing with happiness and we all gathered together to hear his good news. My mother on the other hand was not that impressed, “What did you buy this time?”, she asked my father. My father had replied “This is something that will make all of us have the opportunity to succeed.” My mother was busy going back in forth to the kitchen and living room. We all gathered around my father, I was eager to hear the good the news. My four year old brother jumped up and down calling “aboy” (father) as we persuaded him to tell us about the good news. My father asked if we could

My parents speak the language; I also speak some and understand a lot but the rest of my siblings had a hard time to speak the language. The culture was similar to our country. We had to learn everything quickly and in less than 2 month I spoke Amharic fluently. During the times we stayed, my parent did a lot of preparation going back and forth to government office to get everything done to our final journey.
There was a lot of corruption going on during that time. It was supposed to be easy to get everything done. However the person who worked in the office was not following the rules. It became who you know and how much money you are giving them under the table to help you. My parents didn’t have money to bribe anyone. They only had the money they borrowed and did not have any to spare. It made it a very difficult to process as they kept telling my parent you need to go back to Eritrea to get more papers while everything was
Ethiopia is one of the most unique among African countries for maintaining its freedom from colonial rule, with the short exception of an occupation by the Italians from 1936-1941. A socialist state was established in 1974 with the overthrow of Emperor Selassie, who had been in control since 1930. A junta or group of military officers called the Derg was responsible for the coup. Yet, this corrupt administration has lead only to warfare and wide scale public suffering. In 1991, the junta was finally brought down by a combination of revolutionary forces who called themselves the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front. In 1994, a constitution was drafted and 1995 marked Ethiopia’s first multiparty elections. Recently, a boarder feud with Eritrea, that lasted over 2 years, was ended in December of 2000; yet recent objections by Ethiopia have delayed a final declaration of border.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Eritrean President Issayas Afeworki each played a crucial role in the eruption of the conflict. Both ...
When I walked inside the front door something didn’t seem right. The feeling of sorrow overwhelmed the house. It was so thick I could literally feel it in the air. Everyone was motionless. They were sulking;I was befuddled. The most energetic people in the world, doing absolutely nothing. I repeatedly asked them what was wrong. After an hour or so, my dad pulled me aside. He said that my Aunt Feli had passed away last night. My mind went for a loop, I was so confused. I thought that he was joking, so I replied “You’re lying, don’t mess with me like that.” and punched his shoulder softly while I chuckled. My dad quickly started tearing up and said, “There...
Eritrea was part of Ethiopian history since the first century A.D. it was one major part of the Axumite and Abyssinian rulers of Ethiopia. Historical and anthropological studies show that Eritrea was part of Ethiopia’s genealogy until the 1890 Italian invasion.1 Eritrea fall under Italian c...
The challenge for me was not so much understanding people but, people understanding me, my accent and the way I formed sentences were different so I had to essentially learn how to speak “American English”, and become familiar with the slangs, terminologies and so on. The next thing that relates to language is spelling, there are several words that are spelt differently such as color, is spelt “colour” or program is “programme”. Needless to say this was difficult, but as the years passed, I was able to master the nuances that goes into spoken and written
Writing, is one of the most fearful and over thought piece of work. I personally, grew up struggling in writing and I had to find out how to write a “perfect” essay as I was looking forward to pursing a higher education. Throughout middle school and high school, I developed learning habits that made me write the way I write. Now writing for me is not as easy as some people think but at the same time it is not as hard as some people think if that makes sense.
At the age of seven, my life changed forever. I was no longer living in my native country; I was now a fragment of the millions of immigrants who come to the United States in search of the American Dream. At the time, my father had recently lost his job and my mother was unemployed, which caused incredible financial stress for my family. My father decided to risk his life crossing the Rio Grande River for our family to have a better life and greater rewards.
On February 21, 2016, I, Deputy John Arnold, went to 11747 West 105th Street South to assist another deputy in reference to a fight in progress.
I received a voice mail today from Sean McKnight stating he has a meeting setup with Ken Barber and some other individuals on the executive board of Illinois Joining Forces (IJF). I felt it was my duty to inform the group about some important facts that Mr. McKnight is very good at hiding. I met Mr. McKnight during my time at NIU. I just served my time as the NIU Veterans Club president and decided it was time to let someone else take the helm. Matthew Galloway the current Veterans Club president introduced the club to Sean McKnight at a veterans club meeting. Sean came in and presented himself as a seasoned veteran’s advocate who has many connections throughout the state of Illinois and Washington D.C. He promoted his organization that he was starting Warriors Guarding Warriors as a revolutionary concept that has not been thought of as for yet throughout the veteran community. Finally, he offered his services to any veterans having trouble with VA benefits or the medical process. At the time we did not know that he was not officially certified to help veterans, and nor did he actually know the proper process or paper work needed to help our fellow veterans. Sean offered to be the Veterans Clubs mentor. The club held a vote and
When I was a Child, I have never stopped wondering what it would be to fly in the sky. I had tried to jump from sofa or bed with an opened umbrella in my hand, and imagined myself as a flying bird. As I grow up, those wonderful fantasy become faded in my brain. I still like flying, and I had experience something like helicopter tour, but never a real fly. I always have the thoughts to explore life, to experience
I looked up and saw my father. "hello father, what's wrong" I asked. "Were moving so you, need to go pack." Said father. "Where are going?" I asked. "To the U.S." Said father. we finished packing all our belongings. Then, We put all of our bags into a bundle and now were now ready to go. We started to walk to the seaport to get on the steamship. When we all got there we saw the ship and we were all in awe of how massive it was. As we waited to get on the ship we all had to write our names on the manifest with our ages and our origin but I had to fill out Loretta's for her because she is only five. We got on the steamship and it was nothing like I expected.
It all started when Ms. McCrystal began a lesson on how evolutionary changes impacted the lives of other organisms. Allie knew something interesting was going to happen, because Ms. McCrystal was the most engaging teacher on team 8-1. The very next day Ms. McCrystal had all of her Students do an assignment on the five fingers of evolution. Then she announced that the class was going on a class trip to the science museum.
Everything for a year had been leading up to this point and here I was in the middle of the happiest place on earth in tears because my friends had abandoned me in the middle of Disney on the senior trip.
Then the phone rang and Dad answered it. It was hard to tell what the conversation was about, it did not last long and Dad didn’t say much. When he hung up he was quiet. Then Mom asked, “Who was that, honey?” Blunt and to the point he said, “Grandma,” (his mom) “Grandpa got sick last night.” Suddenly I was not hungry any more. “What’s that mean?” Mom asked, taking the words right out of my mouth. Dad did not really know. All Grandma said was that Grandpa got up in the night, went to the bathroom, and then yelled for help before collapsing. She called 911 and an ambulance came and got him. From the hospital in Spirit Lake he was life-flighted to Sioux Falls.
It was on a Friday morning at 4:30 A.M. that happiness and joy filled the hearts of both my parents. I was born on November 29, 1996 at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale Florida. My parents had five children, and among the five children that they had, I was the third (or middle) child from them. It started off as two boys, then I came along as the first girl, after it was another boy, then finally, another baby girl; so total was three boys and two girls. The way that my parents lived and treated each other was the same as if any other married couple that loved each other so much. They’ve gone through a lot to get to where they are now today, but they made it and along the way had us five children. They have been really strong with each other which made them only have the five of us and no other step children. My mom is a great cook and enjoy cooking for us; this is probably where my passion for culinary comes from. My dad is an amazing tailor, he is very good at making our clothes, and my passion for fashion probably came from him. My dad is also a teacher, one of the best math teacher I know, he is passionate about his job and his family is the center of his universe. I cannot finish this chapter without mentioning my grandmother, I was lucky enough to have ever met. I had spent part of my life time with her, like the rest of the family she is sweet, my grandmother Abelus,
