I was born in Guatemala in a city called, called Guatemala City. Life in Guatemala is hard which is why my parents brought me into the United States when I was eight months old. Some of the things that makes life in Guatemala hard is the violence. However, Guatemala has plenty of hard working men, women, and children who usually get forced to begin working as soon as they are able to walk. However, unlike many other countries, Guatemala has a huge crime rate. I care about the innocent hard working people that live in Guatemala and receive letters, threatening to be killed if they do not pay a certain amount of money at a certain amount of time.
Guatemala is located in Central America and is south of Mexico. It is home to volcanos and Mayan ruins. Guatemala has strong Mayan and Spanish influence. The Spanish left their mark with their own beliefs and traditions. The Mayan people are a big part of Guatemala and therefore also reflect Guatemalan culture. More than half of the Guatemalan population have indigenous roots. There are many traditions and remedies that are practiced by the people of Guatemala. I was born in Mexico and raised in beautiful San Diego since the age of four. Coming to the United States at a very young age I had to face many challenges that have shaped me to the person that I am today. The Mayans were a great powerful group of people that followed what they believed in, build big beautiful temples. The Maya build a big temple inside the big jungle of southern Mexico. The temple is so big that you can see it from high in the sky. You can still see the temple today, but the temple lays in ruins because of the thick jungle that have grown over it. At that temple, they sacrificed people for the gods. If the Mayans had died out because of all the desices the Spanish brought we could have learned more about them.
Food is one of human beings favorite addiction. From the arepas, to arroz con coco (coconut rice) there are many different platters from my cultural background. Being Colombian and eating Colombian almost every day brings me closer to these aspects from my culture. The way I feel connected to my Colombian culture is through its food. The Maya were one of the most sophisticated cultures in the western hemisphere before the Spanish arrived. They are a native Mesoamerican people. Their religion worshiped primarily nature gods, such as the sun god, the rain god, and the corn god. They were also well known for their importance of astronomy and astrology, also ritualistic human sacrifices. The Mayans also were very well renowned for building pyramids and temples. The Mayan religion was founded in c. 250 A.D. and located in Mesoamerica, which is southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize (Mayan 1). They also liked to stay near or around tropical lowlands like Guatemala. The Maya did really well in producing agriculture, pottery, hieroglyphic writing, calendar-making and mathematics. Most of the cities that the Maya lived in were made of stone and were abandoned around 900 A.D. (Maya 1). Bwenatoga Maya Lilavati lived in Mojenjo Daro, India. His parents died of pneumonia when he was young and all he had left was his older brother, Sadeine. Bwenatoga lived as a guard of his highly protected city. Sadeine was a guard as well except he worked on the other side of town and rarely saw his brother. Bwenatoga stayed up in a watchtower all day while his brother got to patrol the city. He was proud of what he was though. He rarely complained to his Raja Commander for a promotion and was delighted with the weaponry. He would use a crossbow to take down any enemy invasions.
