The trips were terrific!!! My workshop at UMich was good and the weather there was quite cool at night. The wind from Lake Michigan was actually chilly. I can even imagine how cold it is in the winter! But the buildings are pretty (especially the Law school) and the football stadium is huge. I enjoyed the week over there. I spent a Saturday afternoon in Detroit after the workshop. The Art Institute has rich collection of paintings and statues. And the free history museum nearby is super fun. Also, that was my first time passing by a baseball stadium. The Tigers had a game in the afternoon. The new light rail was packed hours before the game started due to the game. We almost visited every tourist spots in Tokyo. We visited two major temples and the garden of the emperor of Japan. And as my sister insisted, we went to Yokohama to see a baseball game. It was a good game. Both of us enjoyed it. We also went to the Tokyo skytree and the Tokyo tower. And of course, we didn't miss the fish market and our ramen (as attached)! This Monday, we joined a one day trip to Mt. Fuji. We were lucky to see the peak when we arrived. I bought a small amulet at the small shrine there. Hope things will go smoothly in the following year. During our trip, we also visited the Ghibili museum (a cute museum for animation movies from the Ghibili workshop). The design of the museum is full of childlike feelings and it is worth a visit. Several interesting things we observed during our trip are: every man and woman in Tokyo wears almost the same on weekdays (white shirts and blue or black pants/long skirts); most Japanese understands English, but they do not speak English. They answer our questions in Japanese and nod their heads as if we understood. But, they were kind and did really want to help; Japanese drinks too much beers and eat too much fried foods! I wonder why they have the longest longevity in the world. This should be a valid question,
