Back in High School I could not even see myself pursuing any goals that I had set. I got pregnant at sixteen, and decided to drop out of school so I could work full-time to support my family. Needless to say, my mom was not happy. She had worked so hard for my future. I realized the only way to ensure my family’s future was through higher education. Knowing that was the key factor to happiness I enrolled at SCALE (an adult program from Somerville High School). Currently I have a rewarding job working in a Day Care for Catholic Charities. I help kids learn about the world through play. For me, that has been about as close to “right livelihood” as I have ever enjoyed.
When I went back to college last year, it was for the purpose of furthering my education. My plan was to get an associate degree in Early Childhood Education then proceed to a Bachelor’s degree. Along the way, something unexpected happened. Can I love? Can I be loved? Am I worthy of love? I am a woman who experienced the anguish of love-loss at a very tender age and these questions capture my prime concern and fear in life. At a young age, I bore the brunt of neglect and abuse from the very caregivers who were supposed to be my protectors. At the age of 16, I was put into foster care. I was born on April 1st of 1998 in South Bend, Indiana. I was born in Memorial Hospital by Cesarean Section. When I was born, I weighed 8 pounds and 15 ounces. I was 21 inches in length and I was born on time. I did not have any birth weight issues. I was jaundice, though. I was the second and last child to be born. My parents were married when I was born, but they divorced when I was 6 years old.
I believe that a child’s growth is developmental, and each child needs a secure caring and motivating atmosphere in which to grow and developed emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. I believe nature and nurture are the two aspects that influence in child development. Nature and nurture are different in several ways, but they both play an important role in child development. I believe that the environment that a person grows up in has the most influence on child development because children reflect what they are taught and what they learn from the people around them.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.

When do children become adults? No one for sure really knows. Some people think it’s the day you turn 18 others think it’s a mental thing.I know that I really don’t need to know how to be an adult quite yet, but I still have an opinion. Well I think that they are both wrong, I think you become and adult when you are at the age when you seek independence. That could be any age because everyone matures at a different times. The ways you can seek independence is by getting a job, letting go of parents, and taking your education seriously.
Growing up my mother and step-father taught me to be independent. They treated me with respect if I gave them respect and disciplined me when necessary. They also communicated with me well—my parents made sure to tell me what I was being punished. I would categorize my parents as authoritative parenting. I often saw my parents as super strict, but as I was growing up I saw that they were setting so many rules to protect me. As I became older, my parents were more lenient on certain rules—who I could go places with, how late I could stay out, and places I could stay the night at. There were plenty of times that I would go out to my best friend’s house for the night. My mom and step-dad always told me, “let us know when you get there,” she lived about thirty minutes from me. Every single time I would remember after being at her house for hours. By the time I would remember to text them, they would have already texted me. I would be punished for this—grounded and told that I cannot go back to her house for a few weeks. They also pushed me to do my best in school. If I was not making good grades, I couldn’t go anywhere and I wasn’t allowed to have my phone. Whenever my grades were high A’s I was rewarded with my phone or privileges to go places.
