Creating this portfolio has been a blast. Although, there were certain parts to the portfolio that did not play to my strengths. For example, the very first piece you asked to be written was very challenging for me. It took me many rough drafts to be able to indirectly characterize a psychological trait of a character. My first couple of drafts for this piece were describing different traits of the character. I was easily frustrated with the end results of all the pieces, so I scrapped the idea of physical trait and shifted my focus to a physiological trait. It was also challenging for me to describe my first trip to Disney World as negative experience, especially since that trip was the first thing I vividly remember and having an amazing
time. Even though there were certain parts to my portfolio that did not play to mu strengths, there were certain parts that did. Being able to create an entire story solely based off of peanut butter and jelly came very easily to me. I felt that it was a fun challenge, rather than an assignment for the project. It was also very easy for me to recall my first experience in Disney World with my family. Being able to envision the amusement park was an easy task for me. Even though this project did present its challenges, I hope you have a lite time reading all of my pieces.
The third and final media text I chose to create for my portfolio is a concept map. This is because it will allow me to draw out all the connections and characteristics of characters throughout the text and help me prove my thesis statement. Using a concept will help me as well as the reader to easily identify all the ideas within the map.
Although a personal statement is supposed to be mine, in the back of my head, I was thinking that an admission officer would look at this sheet of paper I had written and base my admission on it. Then I felt that although this was supposed to be my story, it was not really what I wanted to say because the purpose was to please someone else. At a certain point, all creativity was gone and my only goal was to have a perfect personal statement. The need to have a perfect personal statement did not allow me to write an essay that was truly me. I already had my mind set that I was going to write what I thought the reader wanted to hear instead of what I truly wanted. I decided, however, that although the two questions of “Is it good?” and “Does this suck?” Barry presents would haunt me for the rest of my life, if my personal statement was not truly me, then I was getting into schools for the wrong reasons. It was surprising how, for so long, I struggled writing this life-altering essay and when I just let it go, and started writing without worrying about perfectionism, I “…was both there and not there… and the lines made a picture and the picture made a story” (124). I was able to write an essay that mattered to me as opposed to something that was a misguided version of myself.
Along with creating steps which will lead me towards my ultimate career goal, the creation of a specific five-year plan for myself was key. In five years I will be in school, hopefully in my final year of my Masters degree; a plan which seems so simple to achieve, however requires an extensive amount of hard work and dedication. Being so far in my academic career already, I will hopefully have worked in summer internships or been employed during the year by a speech-language pathologist or various health institutions to gain experience in the profession and potentially become full time employed by one of these institutions post-graduation. In one semester of English 101 I have learned so many things about writing. I used to believe that writing was just putting words on paper, but have since learned that writing is much more than that, I now understand that writing is a way of exploring my mind and of making connections with other writers and readers. Over the course of the semester I have been learning to write in a way that uses the skills of reflection, critical thinking, and much more. I have used these skills to compose two academic essays that I am submitting in a portfolio to determine my final grade in English 101. It's hard for me to say where I'll be in the years to come, already my life has strayed from the path I once thought it would follow. However, that doesn't change my motivation or determination to reach and excel at my personal goals. My whole life I've endured a system that dictated what should be important to me, and while it's helped me learn the practical skills I need outside of an academic setting, I have a passion to grow further from what's expected of me, and so with much enthusiasm I look forward to attending college in which I hope to achieve more by constantly learning and expanding my personal knowledge.
The times we spent at each class, discussing about what success meant to us has allowed me to take a closer look at who I really was, and has made a great impact on myself. This portfolio explains in detail, why I choose the topic I did and what I could’ve done to make my paper better. I discuss my weak points and what I need to focus on, in order to become a better writer. My first essay was challenging because I went into it unprepared. My study ethics was not as it should’ve been. I lacked proofreading which lead to me overlooking some major MLA don’ts. Also, due to feeling overwhelmed from a 4 class semester I felt I bite off more than I could chew, so my attitude was to just make it through. The second essay peaked my interest a bit, because I consider myself a bit on the plump side. Doing the research was beneficial to me as a student and as an overweight female. ...r this portfolio, I could improve by not procrastinating when it comes to completing reflections, captions, and homework. By managing my time more wisely, I can be more efficient and have more time to review or do other work. This can further my learning because these bad habits occur in my daily life. Unless I fix this bad habit, I will continue to have bad time management throughout my life. Also on my classwork and homework assignments I could write neater and show all my steps so when I review all my work I understand how I got my answer and the steps I took in order to get that solution. My thoughts are that I need to pay more attention during class because it affects my understanding of the lesson and concept or I end up writing things that do not make any sense. Also, I need to continue scoring well on my skill quizzes and tests to maintain or boost my grade.
They panic because they realize they must make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives. Visual art majors have no need to panic because they have been waiting for this time for their entire lives. This is now the time they get to shine, and get to do what they have dreamed about. Although visual art majors still have stress concerning deadlines for college applications, they have planned for application season ever since they have picked up their creative utensils. With the portfolio these creative seniors get to rest easy knowing that they have worked years perfecting their trade and now they get to share their talents with the world. The portfolio no doubt is an essential part of receiving acceptance into prestigious art programs around the globe and if put together correctly will without a doubt result in a sparkling acceptance
In order to do that, I had to describe why this topic affected me. These capabilities that I have are ones I was able to develop over the course of this semester. Now that I can recognize my skills, I can focus on how to improve these skills even more. Even though I’m good at poetry, description, and narration, I can still build and improve these skills.
Practice makes perfect. It is hard for me to say where I improve and where not. Although its only 12 weeks’ class, I have learned a lot and broadened my horizon. I could hardly write a simple sentence before I start my composition class. Look now I have already write four papers, reflection in the mid-term exam and now final portfolio. Beside the papers I have learned grammars. Wow! I cannot believe my progress. Now I can talk to people more confidently and more accurately. In the course of time I have enjoyed a lot writing the papers. There was a day or even a week I struggle for a single paper and days where I finished my papers in a couple of hours.
“Assessment is the process of identifying, gathering and interpreting information about students’ learning. The central purpose of assessment is to provide information on student achievement and progress and set the direction for ongoing teaching and learning” (NSW Department of Education and Training, 2007, p.1). I believe an assessment strategy which best encapsulates this understanding of assessment is the portfolio. Specifically, a process portfolio provides a wealth of information about a student’s progress in literacy and not only allows a teacher to assess the learning that has taken place but also helps them to identify the areas in need of improvement. Additionally, the crucial element of the student’s self-assessment and self-reflection in the process of creating the portfolio also allows both the teacher and the student to understand the progress, strengths and weaknesses of their writing.
Portfolios serve the purpose of an extensive record of a student’s best work and skills. As the student progresses through life, record keeping and reflection becomes an expectation. A résumé cannot possibly describe the entire list of qualities each individual possesses. As a result, portfolios thrive in high schools and offices alike to demonstrate a person’s capabilities in the greatest detail. Any person with a future-oriented mindset should have a portfolio to create opportunities for a successful life.
This was the most difficult to write because you want to impress the reader with your writing skills as well as your qualifications. One major revision that I made was moving some of the information from my resume to my cover letter and vice versa. During this revision, I moved a sentence that stated previous courses to my resume. This was more conventional for a resume because it can be stated in one bullet rather than take up space on the cover letter. The time to breathe before advancing further in my future projects, the difficult moments instead of discouraging me, these moments give me motivation and the necessary energy to move forward. I am optimist but realistic. My parents taught me that we live in a world that is constantly changing and to succeed we need a smart plan and the ability to adapt and adjust to the changing world environment but more importantly one need to prepare one’s self to succeed.
