I have played soccer my entire life. At twelve years old, I completed a Bryst soccer camp after which I decided that I wanted to play at a higher level than house league. My goal was to make a Bryst Academy team. In grade nine and ten, I committed to playing soccer six days a week and twice on weekends to gain the skills required to play at a higher level and reach my goal. I had the opportunity to train with a boys team at an academy called RVDL. Many challenges come with training with boys as a female. It takes time to prove that you are as good as, or even better than, them. By working hard and challenging them, I gained this respect. FIFA was depending on this World Cup to gain popularity, they needed more interest to spark people to play. If the United States had not won, it was predicted that not many in the suburban would not have much interest in soccer. Millions of young girls across the United States came to this event. After the World Cup it “will celebrate the explosive growth of soccer for women in the United States, where 7.5 million female players are registered, according to a recent survey by the Soccer Industry Council of America, a trade group. In suburbia, where the game flourishes, girls' soccer has become as popular as sport utility vehicles” (Longman). This World Cup team changed the perspective that soccer was only for males. “‘ We're fighting the myths and prejudices that women's soccer felt in the U.S. in the 70's,'' said Andrea Rodebaugh… 'That there are sports for boys and sports for girls and that soccer is not for girls, not feminine’” (Longman). This team changed the lives for many girls. The team gave little girls hope and faith they could make it in soccer. This team made them believe they could follow their passions.
Abstract: Youth Soccer has recently evolved into a fiercely competitive arena. More and more children are leaving recreational leagues to play in highly competitive select leagues. While select sports are a valuable resource where children can learn how to socialize and become self-motivated, children who start at young ages, ten and eleven, can suffer psychological and physical damage. A child's youth sporting experience is directly influenced by the attitudes, sportsmanship and behavior of their parents and coaches.
From an early age I always knew I would be playing soccer my whole life. My dad showed me the ropes of how to play and got me interested right away. By the age of three I had started playing, and to this day I have not stopped. Soccer has been a huge part of my life and I don’t know where I would be today if I never played. I met some amazing people playing soccer including my coaches who encouraged me and told me never to give up as well as my teammates who became my friends and were always there for me.

This just goes to show that he is being raised right and does not let gender influence his perspective. My son is four years old and he is really sensitive and shy but I will never condemn him for it. I tried putting him in soccer but he didn’t take to it at this time. However, there were little girls playing on the team he wouldve played on. Does that make him a coward because he is a boy and he is scared. While there are girls playing and they are girls? No, it's just a matter of whether it is for you or not. And as my son gets older he will understand that he should always treat women as equals. And this will be passed down to his children someday. That is how socialization is truly done. The reason that the girls did so well in their games is that they played like a team not a like a individual. Being a Lil’ Kickers coach has impacted and shaped my character by sparking leadership qualities that will carry on throughout my entire life. Even though being a soccer coach may seem common, I would separate myself from the crowd by the positive impact I have made on children which goes far beyond the soccer field. While I have coached many kids ranging from eighteen months to nine years old, there is one four year old in particular that has given me a new understanding of myself and others.
Though I undoubtedly cherished every moment with all of the activities I had participated in throughout high school, the one I yearn to continue is being a volunteer soccer coach for youth in my community. I’ve always been a firm believer that there is more good in the world than there is bad and coaching these kids, reinforced my belief.
