About three years ago my mom, dad, and sister and I went to our local animal shelter to adopt a puppy that looked like Scrappy from Scooby-Doo.I got out the car and walked to the shelter and heard the sound of dogs barking and whimpering ¨woof, woof¨ and the sounds of kittens meowing,¨meow¨.As I walked in the air pushed the smelly poop and pee that smells like fish guts into my face.Immediately I saw people, kittens as cute as babies, and puppies were blankets inside. As I went to explore I saw blankets and cages as terrifying as prison cells.I was in my own world it was like a fairytale until I heard a person walking toward me and say,¨It's time to fill out paperwork¨.My mom guided me to the chairs that a surprisingly comfy and soft feel.As
she passed me the pen and paper I tripped over thin air and fell on the floor. As I sat there I saw the floor feel my pain, the pen crying, and the cages laughing at me.The air was even going into my mouth like soup.I got back up and my mom assisted me with the paperwork. When I was done filling my stuff out my mom turned in the papers so we could meet our puppy. The lady assisted us to the room and they brought us the puppy. But instead of the puppy running towards me, it backed away. I approached it and it ran away again. My family and I realized we probably couldn't care for her.So we went back to the car and I cried my eyes out while smelling my gum like peppermints. All I could remember in my mind was the puppy and the smell of cat and dog food inside the place.I asked if we could get another puppy but the said,¨no¨.Not only was I sad that I would never get a puppy but that I would never get a puppy, but because that puppy was probably going to lose her life.
When I first arrived “Lisa” The girl that I shadowed told me that there was an emergency with one of the animals. It ended up that a one-year-old beagle ate an entire thing of metabolite, and then slowly started to die. The liver had shut down, and the heart rate was up to 300. Lisa told me that taking a thing of metabolite was like taking 50 cups of coffee at once. The owners of the beagle were there and bowling. The beagle’s name was Murry. Murry's body slowly was shutting down one thing after another. The owners made the decision the dog was going to be put to sleep. We got the dog ready to be taken out. They undid all the cords from the dog so they could take it to another room. I said goodbye to the dog, and then they took it into the other room so that the owners could be there when they put him to sleep. After that happened they then had to put a sleep a little hedgehog that had cancer on its mouth. We then did two regular checkups with one cat and with one dog. Those when great. After that we had a dog come in and it ended up having an affection that might end up killing it. I never heard the end result. The last thing that I did there was that a black lab had been bitten by another dog, and that dog ripped a hole in the neck of the black lab. The doctors had to perform surgery on the dog to close up the holes in the neck. They first had to clean it out with qutips. And blood stated to come out right then I was a little dizzy and I thought I was going to faint. But thank god I didn’t. I saw a cat get dental work on it. And a cat get a bath and they had to blow dry it and brush the hair while it was a sleep.
And do you remember the story that I started with about the little girl and Mom purchasing that cute little brown Cocker Spaniel? Well the Mom soon realized that the little puppy was too much to handle. So the Mom took the puppy to local animal shelter and gave up her rights. The puppy was sad, but was excited of the opportunity of a forever home. Unfortunately, days, weeks, months past and no other family came around. Soon the shelter was at its max and since the puppy had been there the longest; she had to endure the same fate as many animals in the animal shelter do. That of a perfectly healthy innocent puppy has to be
The orphanage had its up's and downs I remember certain things such as Movie and gave nights. I remember feeling a sense of coldness I had never felt before I was lonely and at times afraid. From there I went to my first foster home I believe her name was Ms. B I think I was about 12 year's old going there. At this time I was use to not being with my mom and being my own man. Yes man at the age of 12, starting off it wasn’t so bad there was another kid there with the same name as mine. He and I use to sit up and talk about what and who we were going to be when you grew up. There were times when Ms. Johnson had her boyfriend come over to the house they would listen to loud music and drink she got so drunk that at times she made Marquise and I stand in the corner all night long for no good reason at all. I remember visiting my mom in rehab telling her all of what she was doing to me how I didn’t want to be there how mean and lonely it was there. I guess I was thinking I was going to go home someday as she was in rehab getting clean from the drugs. The years went by as I still sat in what felt like a prison with its ups and downs. I talked with my case worker about what was going on in the home they later moved me
In Fu-Je Chen’s article About Parental Voices in Adoption Narratives, Chen analyzes the way society has typically seen adoption and the role of single parents in the literary world. In the literature, society’s standards for men and women still exist, men are supposed to be the strong, testosterone driven providers, but Chen describes how they are often “first denied expressions of their emotional wounds (Chen 2)”. After Silas is shunned from Lantern Yard he had lost his reputation and had to start again, he hides himself away after arriving in Raveloe, trying to protect himself from being hurt once again. He tries to keep up to society’s standards of men having to be strong and stoic whenever they are hurt, like an injured animal that hides
I heard a blood-curdling scream and I jumped. I felt silent tears running down my heavily scarred face, but they weren’t out of sadness. Mostly. They were a mixture of pain and fear. I ran into the eerie, blood-splattered room and screamed as I felt cold fingers grab my neck. Before that night, I didn’t believe in the paranormal. Now I sure as heck do. I had been chased out of my house after a fight with my step-parents because I wasn’t doing well in school (I had dyslexia), and I had taken shelter in what seemed like a normal house. I realized what I had gotten into after the sun set. The doors locked without a sign of anyone going near them. A cold draft filled the room I was in. The house turned into a horrific scene, and I knew I would never get out alive. It was the Asylum. There’s a rumor in our town, a rumor that started when someone made the observation that everyone fit in. No one was considered strange, homeless, an outsider. That doesn’t seem possible, you think. In my town, there are tons of people with no homes, or people that don’t belong, you think. Well, think again. Those homeless people? Think about how many there are. They fit in with each other. Those people that don’t belong? Once again, they fit in with each other. But then, you
While I was doing my preceptorship, it was like nothing I’ve ever witnessed before. The lead Veterinary technician, Nicole gave me a wonderful tour of the building. Right before the tour she said that every day at 9:45am they have a little huddle with each department. During this huddle, each department shares what they have going on today, who is going to have a walkie talkie on them today, and who is going to be where. On the tour she explained to me how many different programs they do with all the animals. Also they don’t just work with dogs and cats. They have dogs, cats, pocket pets, and also birds. Going to the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley was an awesome experience. First of all this place was huge. They have several different boarding rooms for all kinds of different animals.
Most pet shops sell super cute puppies and kittens, but no one really knows where those pets come from. Many people know about puppy mills, which are places where puppies and dogs are kept and bred. They typically live in small cages and inhumane conditions, and the same things happen with kittens, too. Adopting from an Adoption Center like Adopt-A-Pet.com or ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) will help animals in need of a home. Adopting a pet is a better choice because adoption is less expensive, two lives are saved, and adopting stops the flow of money going to puppy and kitten mills.
“Every year in the U.S., more than 6 million, lost, abandoned, or unwanted dogs and cats enter animals shelters” (Companion Animal Overpopulation). Once these dogs and cats cannot find a home after a certain time, they are euthanized due to overcrowding. This is a growing concern nowadays. There are so many wonderful dogs waiting to find their forever home, with so many reasons to adopt over buying from a breeder. Some of these reasons include: you get to pick the age, they tend to be healthier, house trained, and most importantly, you're saving a life.
Have you ever wondered, how it feels to be in a place where is overcrowded, and you are next in line to be euthanize? This is the life of the shelter animal when no one adopts them for a certain period of time. According to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or known as ASPCA, each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized, which are 1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats. I am sure; most of you have some point in your life, owned a dog or a cat. Whether you are an animal lover or not, you don’t want to see innocent animals losing their lives. I personally have adopted a dog from a local shelter. There is no doubt that pet adoption from a shelter is a satisfying decision that will save innocent
Almost everyone wants to have a fun, loveable dog to call their own. Not many people are aware that 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in shelters each year. Their lives end because no one wants to adopt them. If you are interested in adding a loving companion to your home, be a hero, save a life and adopt a shelter dog. Once you decide to bring a dog into your family, then you will have to make a decision from where. When begin your search you will find that you have many options. You can adopt from a shelter or a rescue group, or you can buy from a pet store or a breeder. There are many reasons why you should adopt from a shelter rather than buy from a pet store or a breeder. Instead of adding more dogs to the world by buying from a breeder,
The idea of owning an animal seems wonderful until you actually have to decide where to get the pet. People have a tendency to feel unsure whether to adopt from a shelter or actuall7 buy the animal from a breeder. Most of the time their first choice is to buy a pet from someone. That is because they don't have knowledge of how adoption can change a person. Not only do you help the animal, but you also help yourself. Pet adoption has various economical, ethical and health benefits that enhance our lives.
It was the worst movie I had ever watched. Not because it was poorly made but because it was so ghastly. I usually don’t watch horror movies. I grew up in a strict household with very rigorous rules, but this one I couldn’t turn away from. We were at my grandmother’s house for Christmas and my siblings and I had some extra time on our hands. My grandmother always had HBO which was great because I could watch movies here that I couldn’t at home. At first we were watching The Blind Side but when that ended Orphan came on. Orphan is about two parents, Kate and John who decided to adopt a child after Kate had a miscarriage. Kate suspects that the child they adopted may not be the child they thought she was. From the beginning of the movie it had a foreboding atmosphere. You knew everything was going to go bad but you didn’t know when. Watching that little girl get away with all of her despicable acts throughout the movie was painful and I’m not sure why I was watching it. It had an allure to it that couldn’t be explained. It was about that time of the movie. The girl turned against the family and took a knife from the kitchen. Knowing what was coming next I took the
A little boy with a toothless smile came running toward me. I stopped him and gave him my water slide tickets. He gave me a smile that said I had given him the world and ran away squealing after his daddy. I sighed again and thought, "Well, at least he's happy!" My throat tightened as I swallowed another sob. I quickened my pace to the changing room. I wanted to get away from this place as soon as possible. I opened the door and walked in. The smell of sulfur, soap, and shampoo assaulted my nostrils, while the sight of naked wom...
As a kid, I fell in love with the idea of getting a puppy for Christmas. Wrapped in a small box with a bow on top sitting under the tree just like the movies and tv shows I had seen. I can remember making a Christmas list of all the things I wanted that year, and every year the same thing that I wanted had said “puppy” with it underlined so that my mother knew which was my favorite on the list. Every year no surprise, I didn’t find a dog. I never understood why I never received one. When the kids at school talked about the few dogs they had at home made me so jealous, but I hoped that one day it would be me to have my own best friend at home.
"Honey," my mom yelled to me one sunny afternoon, "Go out and feed Sugar." Sugar was our dog, a big, husky lap dog. I went to our kitchen, and got some food. Then I stepped outside, into the warm, fresh August air, looking for Sugar. I glanced to where I kept Sugar, and couldn't believe my eyes. Sugar was not there. I ran to the place where Sugar slept, I saw that the leash was elegantly coiled up. I knew that Sugar could not have run away. I thought that she must have chased a deer or another animal. Then a disturbing thought hit me, Sugar might have been abducted. As I tried to push that thought out of my mind, I thought that my mom could have put Sugar out in the garage. I went to the garage to check, but unfortunately Sugar wasn?t there. ?Mom,? I cried after a couple of seconds, ?Do you know where Sugar is??
