All human beings experience anxiety, which may be a blessing or a curse. Nervousness can motivate one for that test that is looming in the future, or assist in the performance of various goals and tasks that require completion. While the heightened emotion can catalyze a needed result, if improperly dosed it can paralyze an individual and prevent successful outcomes.
During many of my years of schooling, my desire to achieve often became a detriment to productivity. The pressure to excel and resultant fear of failure impeded my ability to function, given a significant escalation of feelings of anxiety. I was left dumbfounded, despite the correct mindset essential for success, there was inherent risk of adverse repercussions! With perseverance,
I was able to complete my responsibilities exceptionally, yet much unneeded and unhealthy strain was a by product. I reasoned that as expectations increased, I would need a way to reduce these adverse feelings so that my success could be guaranteed with future, more difficult tasks. Consequently, I decided to take action. One evening in particular, I was having a tougher time than normal in finalizing an assignment. I felt it necessary to take a break from schoolwork, and embark on the journey to my salvation. Through the internet, I explored methods to mitigate the effects of anxiety without resorting to medication. My first realization was being comforted in the knowledge that I was not alone. There were suggestions to discover a healthy outlet, such as listening to music or playing sports. Despite consummate effort these were temporary solutions, and I was seeking a permanent fix. Despite weeks of persistent searching I was frustrated by failure and began to feel helpless. Eventually, on a night I remember as clear as day, I stumbled upon a video that provided the solution to my travails. It’s simplicity was only succeeded by its utility. I learned to “fake it ‘till you make it.” It was demonstrated to me that by mentally willing worry inducing thoughts out of one’s mind, they disappear. Indeed with the passage of time, this cognitive exercise became habitual, and eventually prevented anxiety provoking thoughts altogether. The tension I now experience preceding a test enhances my study, strengthens my resolve, and buttresses my fortitude. Further, I acknowledge that with properly directed effort I can attain any goal to which I set my mind. Finally, I also hold dear to my heart a valuable lesson that was unearthed. Life contains many blessings and curses. It is not enough to do just with the blessings one is granted. Rather, it is how one takes their curses and transforms them into blessings, that ensures one success.
Growing up, my parents never expected perfection but expected that I try to accomplish my best. The effort I’ve put forth in learning has been reflected in my grades throughout my high school career. I’ve entered myself in vigorous course work such as AP Government and AP English to become well prepared for my college career, all while maintaining a 4.4 grade point average this year. Not only do I engage in AP classes, but up until this year I had no study halls. I wanted my day to be packed full of interesting classes that I would enjoy learning about. My grades and choice of classes prove the effort that I put forth in my learning. Working hard now can only pay off in the future. Learning now creates a well-rounded human being. Working to learn is why I am so dedicated to my studies now.
Anxiety is one of the most fundamental emotions shared by all species of animals. When confronted with danger, the fight or flight response of the sympathetic nervous system is triggered so that we are prepared to react and protect ourselves. Without anxiety and its physiological manifestations, such as hypersensitivity to environment and enhanced blood supply to leg muscles, the likelihood of harm or disaster in threatening situations would undoubtedly dramatically increase. A moderate amount of anxiety also has the result of prompting individuals to prepare for certain events, such as exams and presentations, that clearly benefit from this action.
It is perfectly normal for any human being often to be nervous before making an important decision or before taking a test. But in some cases, the nervousness is extreme leading to a condition known as Anxiety Disorder. This is a serious and un-preventable mental condition where by worry and fear is constantly overwhelming. It affects people from all age groups starting in childhood. The most common symptoms of anxiety disorders includes: dizziness, dry mouth, shortening of breaths, nightmares, sleeping problem, not able to concentrate or stay calm, panic, fear and uneasiness amongst others. Anxiety disorder can reach to a point of the patient not being able to lead a normal life (Chakraburtty, 2009).
Most students experience some degree of test anxiety. Test anxiety refers to a combination of physiological, emotional, and psychological components that are caused by the stress of taking exams. This may interfere with one's ability to think, reason, and plan. For some students, test anxiety is an unpleasant experience but doesn't necessarily interfere with exam performance. For other students, however, test anxiety is not only an unpleasant experience but also seriously interferes with exam performance.
When it was Friday night, 5 friends were making their way to a haunted house. These friends were Alex, Brennen, Tommy, Gerardo, and Zeke. There's no questioning that the essence of society has become notorious for being unforgiving and cold to all those who encounter it. Some individuals are buffeted by it while a select few rise to the occasion to defeat it. In the so-called "adult world," few genuinely care about hardships faced by others previous to their concurrence and instead are only concerned with making personal gains. This concept is a rather disquieting one, but entirely relevant nonetheless. Personally, I’ve fallen victim to such conditions and have chosen to brave the storm. Over the course of the writing year I have learned many new skills. It was very helpful to learn these skills because know I know how to use them in real writing and speaking.
I had achieved something. I conquered an impediment in my life. Something that was a burden to me since I said my first word. For seven years I was plagued by my inability to speak normally. After a school change and hours upon hours of speech therapy, I was able to talk normally. This accolade in my early life opened a door for me, and it also inadvertently shut one.
Out of all the quarters this school year, I feel like this quarter has made me progress the most, because I put a lot of effort into reading books and enjoying them, there are many . As expected, I got better and faster at reading but an unexpected change was that I write better compared to last year. One of my major losses was that I was becoming uninterested and bored from too much reading, which explains why my total pages read decreased compared to the other quarters.
The best journey of my life so far was when I traveled to Hawaii for the Hawaii baseball World Series in July 2014. The team I went with was from San Diego and not one person from that team knew me besides the coach, which was my girlfriends grandpa. My best friend Mikey Alvarez and I had been chosen to play for the team and when I found out I was playing in Hawaii I was so excited I started to yell “Hawaii here we come,’’ with an extreme amount of excitement. Two weeks before my family and friends family went to Hawaii, we left to San Diego to meet up with the team. One of my most lucid memories of my childhood concluded to injury. Being that beginning of my plight, I faced many negative emotions. At the age that I was, thirteen to be specific, I believed that this was the lowest moment of my life.
The one event that transitioned me from a child to an adult is when my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. This has been a long, tough period for my family but it has forced me to become the adult version of myself, and helped me realize I must take care of my grandmother. It can be hard to think that things happen for a reason but take the quote, “People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime”. I have had good people in my life leave, some being my closest friends. Time can pull people apart and people can change, but they once served a purpose in my life. They taught me things that I wouldn't know and experiences I will never forget. I have learned these friendships had to vanish only for the best. I think when people leave and things are wrong, it teaches me to let go and appreciate when things are right.
It was the day before my birthday and I was really hoping to get a really awesome present. I told all my friends and families about the present and they all have been asking me what it is. I told them it was a really expensive drone! They all asked me how much the drone was and I told them it was one-hundred dollars and fifty-seven cents.
