The more advanced technology becomes, the more of a toll it has on our daily lives. Lee Siegel states that “we shop, work, play, love, search for information, seek to communicate with each other and sometimes with the world online. We spend more time online than ever before. Yet people are not arguing about this startling new condition." It is my belief that due to the control technology has taken over society, technology is ultimately detrimental to society as a whole.
Technology has changed our world dramatically over the last several decades. Several generations before us did not have air conditioning, telephones, television much less internet. However, today we have access to all of this and more. Technological advances have not only made changes in how we communicate, but also in how everyday tasks are done. Social networks, like Facebook or You Tube can keep someone updated with world events and even local events. It has become part of everyday life in which people can’t live without. But what lies beneath is the evil of how addictive technology can be. The above chart demonstrates that almost 60% of students use electronics more than two hours a day. This shows us that technology can be addictive. Jonathan Mandell’s article Are gadgets, and the Internet, actually addictive, recalls a time in April 2007 when BlackBerry users could not send or receive emails for 11 hours because of a glitch in the system. Many people reported this as a natural disaster (Mandell, 2007). People are relying on technology so much, that it is becoming a major problem in our society when it becomes temporary unavailable. Being able to plan your whole day on your smart phone and lock your front door to your house at the same time contributes to society laziness and dependency on technology. The opinions of many people vary on technology and the effects it has on today’s society. Some say that it’s more beneficial than anything, others completely disagree, and some have mixed emotions. Would you rather read out of a book, or play online learning games with a possible risk of eye problems? It’s about taking matters into your own hands. 71% of people believe technology has improved their lives. 76% of people completely disagree by saying that technology creates a lazy society and that is distracting and corrupting. Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.
Technology has continued to improve greatly throughout generations, to make our lives easier and higher quality. The current generation depends tremendously on technology for anything major, to simple everyday tasks. Constantly updated communication devices and social media makes things we never thought possible happen. Despite the many positive qualities that come with constant improvements of technology, there is a downside that is creating a generation that is continually distracted. The distraction people struggle with today, affects development, everyday tasks, and overall concentration.

There's no questioning that the essence of society has become notorious for being unforgiving and cold to all those who encounter it. Some individuals are buffeted by it while a select few rise to the occasion to defeat it. In the so-called "adult world," few genuinely care about hardships faced by others previous to their concurrence and instead are only concerned with making personal gains. This concept is a rather disquieting one, but entirely relevant nonetheless. Personally, I’ve fallen victim to such conditions and have chosen to brave the storm. For the first several years of my life, I was just like any other child; I achieved all the typical developmental milestones, cultivated new interests, made friends, and began to familiarize myself with the world around me. By the time I started elementary school, I was already enrolled in theater classes, ballet lessons, and a youth soccer league. It was also during these tender years that I began to develop an interest in learning, beyond that of most other children my age.
This essay I thought was a fairly straightforward one for me, but many times I had to be creative. Writing about someone else is hard in the first place, and I had to focus my essay based on one topic or a few topics from a timeline of someone else’s life. This type of essay was not very easy for me to write because I write better when I can connect ideas to my own life and make it more personal. Thankfully this essay only had to be 2-3 pages long because I am not sure about the information I was given I could write any longer. One big issue I had with this essay was how creative I had to be with what I was going to write, and how distant I felt from the context.
I attended this forum on Tuesday, January 24, in the special collections library right behind Morris Hall. There were around 20 people total in the discussion, and we had a very balanced, spirited debate. I throughly enjoyed this event because it allowed me to learn a lot about events and ideas that are very important in this time, and it allowed me to hear and learn about a lot of different view points and opinions these controversial ideas. I believe that part of the beauty of UGA is in its diversity, and that ability to have such a diverse mix of people really added to our debate and the experience in general. I believe that the ability to have such a civil and lively conversation is something that will be crucial in mending this split country.
I was once told by a teacher that scholarships receive about 1000 applications before their deadlines close, and around 10 of those people are accepted. A one percent chance. He said that statistically, 50 percent of students drop out of college, even with scholarships. That gives me a 0.5 percent chance. I did not work as hard as my body would allow me, for a 0.5 percent chance. I did not overcome my parent’s divorce, for a 0.5 percent chance. I did not double check my homework, instead of wondering if there was enough food to feed me and my 4 brothers tonight, for a 0.5 percent chance.
Technology affects everyone! Whether positive or negative, we are all affected, how it manifests itself into problems for youth will be studied and debated for years. Balancing technology throughout the educational process and keeping with current trends and uses of technology will affect everyone. Technology has transformed our youth’s daily and social lives. How do we measure the effects of technology on our ability to socialize or have a successful social life? Socializing is not just talking face to face, it’s our ability to interact, learn, and create original thought. Technology hindering today’s youth and their ability to socialize is affecting their capacity to read, write, and communicate. Today’s youth depends on careful considerations for the implementation of technologies. Our youth do not have the capability to convey their emotions through the use of technology, understand sadness, happiness or joy through simple text or emails. Communicating through the use of text, chat, and social network sites is lost using abbreviations and slang, inhibiting the use of the Standard English language. Using computers and hand held devices for relationships, reading, writing, and entertainment, turning them into introverted and socially inept individuals. Current trends resonating from our educational institutions to our workplace can be examples of how technology has altered the way younger people communicate. This tragedy transcends from youth to adulthood affecting the workplace. Social networking sites have begun to take hours away from employers.
