Sensation
Warm sun gleaming down and eighty-five outside, a cool breeze and pizza buffet at my own disposal. An escape away from reality and into a relative paradise, no job nor school to worry about, just the concern of applying a generous amount of sunscreen. Sunsets over the cerulean waters are the main event of the evening, along with a fancy meal and a show or two. Adventures in the Bahamas guided by native islanders filled our days. I was accompanied by my family to enjoy a week long cruise on the Carnival Sensation.
Our planning for our family cruise began as soon as my sister, Jasmyne, signed a contract to perform in the shows on a Carnival ship. Jasmyne has always loved dancing and singing, entertaining crowds anywhere. My mom is

my sisters’ top supporter and insisted that we must go on her cruise immediately. Of course, I had no objection. We booked our trip the last week of June for a four day cruise in the Bahamas. I was a bit nervous packing for the trip because this would be my first cruise and the first time out of the country. I was told to pack a good selection of both formal and casual attire for the trip, although I decided against packing any ties. I was also able to pack my favorite shoes: boat shoes and sliders. After finishing packing, my family and I packed in the Dodge Grand Caravan and set the GPS to Port Canaveral, Florida. I would’ve much rather flew to our destination, but flights for a family of six can become expensive quickly. Thirteen hours and thirty minutes later we’d reach the start our trip. Going through customs was an interesting experience to say the least. Randomly, they tend to do searches of individuals and needless to say my dad became the next victim of the checks. He received a full pat down and cracked a joke to the customs officer, which he didn’t seem to approve. After passing the search, we moved on to take a family picture before leaving the mainland and heading out to the immense ocean. Jasmyne met us as we were enjoying the fruit buffet and other snacks. It was nice to see her after not meeting face to face for the last couple months. Eventually, we were able to check into our compact room jammed pack with three twin size beds and no port window. The bathroom had just enough room to barely stand without brushing against the surrounding walls. I shared a room with my parents while my sisters, Jordyn, Brooke, and Brittany, shared a room. Our first night on the cruise ship, I had no trouble with sea sickness. However, Brooke had issues all throughout the cruise. The next day we were to reach our first sight of land: Freeport, Bahamas. After the first night on the boat, we were up bright and early to get first in line in the omelet breakfast line.
Finishing up breakfast, we had to find our shore excursion guide. We already arranged to go reef snorkeling. We packed up everything we thought we would need and boarded the transportation bus to the docks where our excursion would begin. The driving laws in the Bahamas are extremely lenient and not enforced. As a result, everyone is a reckless driver and we experienced this first hand. Our bus ride seemed as if it was two hours long, yet in reality it took around an hour. My dad had already had enough excitement from the bus ride itself. Once funneling off the bus, we boarded the Ocean Mist catamaran. It took us about a half a mile off shore in a coral reef where we’d be snorkeling. On the way to our snorkeling spot, my mom asked the guides a quite obvious question, “So are there like sharks out here?” Our guide simply replied,”Well, we are in the ocean and in the ocean is where sharks live. So, there is a small chance you might encounter a shark.” Obviously, this made my mom a nervous wreck and she was the last to get into the water. We were then equipped with a matching pair of flippers and a pair of goggles along with a snorkel. The guides then explained the importance of things you should not touch. They said touching the wrong coral or shells could result in months in the hospital or even death. This seemed to sit well with our crowd of cruise goers. The snorkeling excursion was an experience to make Freeport a memorable one. We were able to see a diverse selection of fish and sea creatures. My mom had an encounter with a barracuda, which she said she could’ve gone without. Following the boat ride to shore and the bus ride returning to port, we passed through island venders to get back on the boat. And again, we were back sailing the ocean
blue. The next morning, the ship docked in Nassau. We already arranged to spend a day at the beach. The beach was a short walk from the ship. The white sand beach was surrounded by crystal blue waters. The water was fairly calm and made it out to be a perfect day out on the water. We were at the beach about half the day before we went exploring the local shops. I enjoyed the local shops because we were allowed to bargain on the price. I tried buying a twelve dollar T-shirt for eight dollars and couldn’t get her to bulge on the price until I said I’d buy a hat with it. I was pleased with my bargaining skills. It was now time to head back to the ship. We took the short walk back to the ship and went back through security to board the ship. The following day was a day at sea. We were well occupied by the endless buffets, especially the chocolate cake from room service, the waterslides, and the occasional game of shuffleboard. This was our last day on the ship and it all seemed to go by too quick. The next morning we despairingly packed our suitcases and made the walk to the omelet buffet one last time, then it was time to get off the ship. We said our last goodbyes to my sister Jasmyne and took the trudge down the boat ramp to the parking garage. After piling in the van, we turned on the GPS and made our way home. Following the cruise, I grasped just how little of the world I have seen. The cruise made me come to the realization that whatever I’m doing the rest of my life, I either want to be traveling the world during my job or set aside plenty of time to travel leisurely. I firmly believe life is too short to stay in the town you grew up in your whole life. I understand people like to stay in their comfort zones and are afraid to leave behind everything ordinary. However, everything around us is materialistic and almost the exact same “comfort” items will be elsewhere. There are too many stunning places to visit that one must visit in their lifetime, and I hope I have the opportunity to see those beautiful sites. More importantly, there are exceptional people out in the world to meet and create relationships with. Traveling can help us open our eyes to the world we live in. It can allow us to see the way others live, which give us different perspectives on how others view the world. All of these incentives to travel contribute to what I imagine is the best reason to travel: to learn who you are. Going on this cruise, lead me to learn more about myself. I now know that a day without travel or dreaming about travel is a day wasted.
Sharks have also been subjected to medical research, games and competitions, jewellery, souvenirs and cosmetics. We need to take into consideration that sharks play a vital role in the natural world that we live in. it is imperative that we look after these majestic creatures and ensure they remain protected. We need to be aware of the dangers of sharks, swim in protected areas where there are shark nets, and do not swim after dark in the sea (especially not alone) as the sea is the sharks home. Humans should also be wearing wet suits as protection in the ocean. The sea is where they live, they swim freely and they eat – they do not particularly target humans but rather prey on food that is available to them in their habitat.
When I stepped out of the hot, airless plane into the bright, dazzling sunlight beaming down across the burning concreate, I felt excited and nervous. Holding my beach bag in my hand and slipping my Ray Ban sunglasses on with my other, I flip-flopped down the airspace. Overhead I heard the screams of gulls and the chatter of the small fluffy birds. I suddenly realized I had arrived to Hawaii. This trip was such an unforgettable vacation for me because I got to witness the beauty of nature that Hawaii has to offer.
This past summer, my family and I went on a cruise to the Bahamas. We had just docked at the second port, Nassau, and were preparing to exit the gigantic ship named the Carnival Fantasy. Once we got to the city, I noticed it was bustling with people of all different backgrounds and cultures. The roads were narrow and some even hilly. I remember coming to the conclusion that a lot of people in the Bahamas must have road rage what from the blaring car horns I could hear around every corner. My family and I were walking along the sidewalk, glancing into shops as we passed them. The weather was unbearably hot, but growing up in South Carolina allowed my family and I to push onward with our adventure. The sun burn on my back started to pulsate in pain any time the sunlight hit it, so we decided to stick to the side of the buildings that provided shade.
As my family and I walked into the plane, we were excited. The plane ride to jamaica stopped in L.A. and, after that, it went to jamaica. When we arrived in Jamaica it was really hot, but it was wet. I immediately took off my sweater I was wearing on the plane. We took a bus to our hotel. Then we started swimming in the water park. Every night there was a show in the main stage. The next day we woke up early to go to chukka. It was awesome. We saw a great house, rode on horses, and did a challenge course. After we came back from Chukka, we went to the water park and swimming pool at the hotel. Then we ate at fresh, which we went most of the time. The next day we woke up earlier to go to the dolphin cove. The bus was an hour late, but the wait
My vomit clouded the ocean surface with a purple-brown color before fading below the depths. On the other side of the vessel, I re-equipped my mask and plunged into the water to be greeted by my aunt – she was to be my snorkeling partner as she had much experience in the depths of Hawaii. When I submerged my head it was almost as if I had entered a new world. This unseen dimension housed a coral reef that vibrantly shone with a mixture of bright reds and deep blues. The reef almost seemed to pulsate as thousands of fish darted in and out of their subterranean homes. The water was thick with salt and teemed with plankton. We often resurfaced to point out fish to each other. I remember my aunt telling me of the environmental dangers of touching the still-living coral. “If you pierce its skin it will likely become infected and die, and all of the fish who live in it will die too,” she expertly explained. From then on I kept my distance to at least 5-6
The day of my grandparents had told me they have been wanting to go to the Florida Keys and asked if I would like to join. So of course i wanted to go. Oh and when they told me i could bring a friend along i was jumping with happiness inside. They told me we would be going for a couple weeks and they had all expenses covered. So that day I started talking to Jamie and asking her when she would be back, because at that time she was in Florida visiting family. She had told me she would be back . So i asked her is she would like to join me and take a trip to the Keys with me. I could tell she was so excited when i asked her because she texted me back all in caps and said “CALL ME”. So i called her to let her know all of the details. So she ended up getting back .So when she got back from Florida we went to Walmart and bought a lot of
I wake up to the sun shining through the window and the faint laughter from my family downstairs. It's the first day of our annual trip to Rhode Island. I lie in bed for a few moments and think about one thing. Rhode Island. I wouldn’t rather be anywhere else than here. I glance at the clock and it is only eight in the morning, but everybody is already up, enjoying breakfast, and getting ready to head to the beach. It's not supposed to rain until later in the day, so hopefully we can enjoy our day at the beach before it rains. I eventually make my way out of bed and tiptoe across the frigid wood floors and join my family downstairs. Everybody is up except my brother, Thomas.
The big question of the summer was to deal with the sharks and also enjoy family vacation. Each decade has had an increase in the amount of shark attacks than the previous one. A shark attack is defined as “ an interaction between humans and sharks that results in significant or life-threatening injuries or death”
The scene is a familiar one. Peaceful beachgoers splashing around in the water unaware of the monstrous danger that lurks beneath. The suspenseful music reaches a climax and an unfortunate victim is suddenly dragged underwater leaving behind a bloody trail. The summer blockbuster hit, Jaws, sparked a vilification of sharks that has spread throughout the world. Following Jaws, sharks fell victim to the stereotype of the horrendous man-eating creatures which needed to be annihilated. Because of public opinion on sharks, the hunting and finning of sharks has gone unnoticed for years, becoming a significant problem in our oceans.
I have taken many vacations over the years I have been to Illinois, Kentucky, Texas, and I have also gone to Florida many times. The most recent vacation was when I went to Florida for my senior spring break, with my grandma Linda. We drove all the way there and all the way back, while we were in Florida we stayed with my aunt Fran’s house in Bonita Springs.
It was the last day of school, my friends and I all planned to go to Kings Island the next day. There is a big problem, the thing is I don’t ride rollercoasters and I’m terrified to get on one, I tried to act excited when my buddies kept talking about it but it was just hard because I’d be the boring one not getting on any of the rides. I knew that this trip was going either make me conquer my fears or become more scared of them.
Although that shark attack did happen, the real facts, discovered on National Geographic, are that shark attacks are rare, happening only 50-70 times per year, and 5-15 result in fatalities. You’re more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a shark. Because of these facts, you should feel safe going to the beach this summer. In the third piece, the poem titled “The Shark” by E.J. Pratt, sharks are described as savage in the lines x to x “Part vulture, part wolf, part neither - for his blood was cold”. This description has a negative connotation; who likes to think of an animal that eats rotting, bloated, long-dead fish?
My mom glided over to me. We couldn’t say anything because we were wearing snorkeling gear and we couldn’t take it off without pausing, as I said in the list of rules. A manatee swam past. I reminded myself to thank Mom again when the trip was over. Captain Stacey had mentioned there was a manatee here that was pregnant; I could tell it was that one because it was a bigger manatee than normal, and manatees are pretty big. We swam
As I got up this morning my parents where all yippy and happy like my dog when she wants to play. But they were starting to freak me out because while I was eating they were staring at me. Then as I got my stuff and tried to say goodbye they rushed me out but then I realized why, today was the day I go Afghanistan. But also today was the day that my parents leave for the Bahamas I knew they are going to have more fun than me. But I drove my truck down to the airport I thought about how my parents wanted me just to be gone and even when I got on the plane I thought more about the fact. But all of a sudden the plane landed and I reported to camp but I wasn’t to thrilled. I was mad like a bull and people could tell but I wasn’t to worried. Once
...k. Scared and moving back a little more, the shark was in a freeze position no flipping or wobbling, the only thing that was making a move was his gills. Wanting to know more I asked what kind of shark it is and was told that it’s a Caribbean Reef Shark. After the adult left all the children there, we start to poke it with a stick and was touching it with our hands and feet to feel the skin, which felt rough like I was touching sandpaper. When the kids were poking the reef with the stick I thought it would react in a very aggressive way but that wasn’t the case, it was still calm until they start getting aggressive their self. I sacred cause that’s when the reef begun to start snapping at every movement that was making. It was getting too much for me to take especially since it was going out of control, so I left and have no clue as to what happen to the Reef Shark.
