A wise woman once told me that actions speak louder than words. Despite Mr. Twain being the actual author of these words, my mom said this phrase to me when I was a little girl. I have tried to live by these words every day of my life since then. Whether it be with my family, friends, school or greater community I try to remember that a simple action can have a much bigger impact than words. I enjoy being actively involved in every aspect of my life. With my family, I make an effort to check in with my grandparents and aunts and uncles to make sure that everyone is doing okay. Rather than simply telling them that I love them, I would rather show them that I love them by giving them flowers or helping them with something that might need to be done. On a larger scale, I am also very involved and active within my school community. You can find me all over the school participating in different sports and clubs including basketball, lacrosse, service club, and photography club. I have taken on leadership roles within my school community such as being president of the photography club and leading a senior Kairos retreat.
In a sense, I am a leader. However, that does not necessarily mean that I am the person on the front line with everyone following behind me. I am more of a silent leader. I am a leader because of my actions. Rather than go down the path

that I know is wrong, I stand up for what I believe in and go down the path that I know is right. Even if everyone else is doing something they shouldn’t be, I choose to do what I know is right and what I know needs to be done. This especially happens when it comes to serving others. Despite going to a catholic school, a lot of my fellow peers do not like to help others. Service is very important to me and I have been doing it since a very young age. Whether it be starting a bake sale to raise money, passing out food at a soup kitchen or cleaning up a cemetery, I love helping and serving those around me. I would much rather be out in the world helping other people than only worry about my own personal status. Service is a major example how as humans our actions speak louder than words. I have found during my time in high school that through the service I have done, I have become a leader to my peers around me. I am proud to be able to say that I am part of something that is bigger than myself. I love being a part of a community. My family, my school, and my friends are all different communities that I am proud to be a part of and involved with. I am so blessed that I had the opportunity to get to experience even larger communities when I went on immersion/service trips to Nicaragua and the Appalachian region. By being able to immerse myself in an entirely new culture in Nicaragua, I was able to get a better understanding and appreciation of the world community. I was able to be in solidarity with the Nicaraguan people that I met during my trip. By having the opportunity to learn from the people of Nicaragua, especially the children, I was able to learn so much about myself. It was in Nicaragua that I was able to discover my love for community and the sense of togetherness. After my trip, I realized that I want to travel to many other different countries around the world and continue to add to my experience of the world community. On the Appalachian service trip, I was able to experience our own country as a community. Even though I was in a completely different state, I still felt like I was a part of a greater community. In Appalachia, I realized that despite what many people in this country think, America truly is one giant community of people. It is the actions of the individuals within a community that makes it what it is.
As an individual within a greater community, I know that I am just one piece to the whole. Each individual person within a community makes up one part of the entire thing. It is each individual’s actions that make that community what it is. In every community that I am in, I am an active member who cares about each member. I want the best for my community and will do whatever I can to make it a positive atmosphere for everyone. Community is such an important aspect in life, and everyone should be able to have the chance to experience
it.
Community is like a Venn diagram. It is all about relations between a finite group of people or things. People have their own circles and, sometimes, these circles overlap one another. These interceptions are interests, common attitudes and goals that we share together. These interceptions bond us together as a community, as a Venn diagram. A good community needs good communication where people speak and listen to each other openly and honestly. It needs ti...
I have had both the pleasure and discomfort of being led by good and bad leaders. The way I simply define leadership is by being able to do as you say. Lead from the front and Set the example.
I am appreciative of everyone that has allowed for me to become the individual I am today. I know that if I did not live in such a welcoming community I would not be the same positive, hard-working, and responsible person I am today. I have dedicated my life to serving others and I try to be a leader in my community. I am ASB Vice-President, I intentionally plan events that are make my school a more welcoming and fun environment. In addition, I volunteer at local events around my city such as The Taste of Edmonds, Kidstock, the Edmonds Library Children’s Summer Program. Through these events, I have met many wonderful people that are devoted to their community and want to bring everyone together despite our differences. My experiences with community service and other leadership positions has allowed for me to understand the people around me better and strengthen my passions such as psychology due to wanting to help people in
What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. You also have to know what harmful characteristics a leader may possess to determine if they are good leaders or not.
According to Dictionary.com, a leader is a person who guides or directs a group, but I believe there is so much more meaning to that. It takes key qualities to be a true leader. A leader should be self-motivated, encouraging, ambitious and determined; they should carry as sense of critical thinking and optimism in all that they do. Most imprtantly, Leaders are strategic thinkers; they are constantly thinking about how their ideas, thoughts and actions can affect the world. People who are leaders are visionary people because they look for the "big picture". Before this class, I would have said that there are plenty of synonyms for a leader thinking that words like manager, director, or ruler would suffice. I have learned now that those words don't even come close to the definition of a leader. A leader does things with purpose and has a passion for what they do and who they serve. A manager or director would just want to get the job done without looking at the beauty of it.
There is an agreement in the literature that “when people share a strong sense of community they are empowered and motivated to change the problems they face and are better able to mediate the negative effects over things which they have no control” (Chavis & Wandersman, 1990).
A leader to me is someone who guides and helps motivate others in some type of way. However, everyone has their own definition of what a leader is or what attributes a leader carries. To me someone I found as a leader is world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. As a result, the following sections will highlight three reasons to why I see Floyd Mayweather Jr. as a leader, these are; his pride, determination to be the best, and success.
When everyone works together to create a change in their environment, no matter how small, it brings them together and allows them to see that everyone wants the same thing for others, themselves and their families. This has been demonstrated to me by those in my community who have started petitions for school funding, provided/donated items to schools and local emergency shelters, and have helped feed families in need. Additionally, there is no community if those in it do not support each other. Having individuals, or groups/organizations that have the resources or even just a kind word to offer support to someone who is having a difficult time, or being able to support others achievements, to me, is one of the most important aspects of a community. I truly believe that, again, even just a kind word can make the biggest difference in someone's life.
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
Moving is lots of work took me 4 days to pack and 5 to get everything from one house to the new house in Firestone. It was an extremely sad day when we moved because we have lived in that house for 10 years and have had so many memories like when i had my first sleep over i went down the stairs in a pillowcase and broke my hand and the time my sister did a cartwheel down the stairs and broke the railing and my dad was so hostile and frustrated. The part that made me so hostile is when people had to come to the house and look at the home very cautiously i could not be in the house at all i had to leave and and be out of the house of half an hour with my 1 year old brother. It's extremely stressing to have a little brother that but I admire
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.
By being a part of this community, which is also my family, I have learned much about what it means to be who I am. I have also learned about where my roots lie and
Be active in your community will strengthen it as a whole by interacting will other members in the community. The more you are active in the community the more your community will flourish and that it will also show how much America really means to you. The community you live in is a part of America that you need to show responsibility by being active in your church, getting a fund together to build recreational park, and other things to help out your community. Many communities today don’t have this quality today and that needs to change because it is one of our responsibilities a citizen of
Should the most selfish elite individual take heed and meditate on the ideology behind community, he/she may awaken to the fact that many persons looking after one person has more advantages and a better survival rate than one trying to preserve one. The needs of the one will never outweigh the needs of the collective group. In the end individuality inevitably leads to self-destruction; therefore, commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival.
