A Stranger's help I remember hearing the day before about people protesting. People were talking about these protests being violent and that it had happened before. That night I went to sleep scared knowing that the next day I had school. I was hoping that school would be cancelled the next day and if they hadn't then my mom wouldn't let me go, but knowing the school system there was no way they were going to close schools and my mom would not let me stay home if the school didn't close because if I didn't attend school there was a good chance they would fail me for that year. The next day I woke up still scared, I got ready and waited for my sisters to come out, so we could walk like we usually did every day. Walking to school everything was normal, and everyone was going about their business. It seemed like nothing was going to happen and I was relieved. We walked until we reached our favorite morning food stand and I bought my sisters and I plantain chips and we continued to walk down the dusty street until it was time for me to go a different route. We said our goodbyes. I waited until I couldn't see them anymore and crossed the street into the neighborhood with the weird little white church that constantly had people screaming, I've heard many things about this church. …show more content…
"They worship the devil, you shouldn't walk by there." My friend would always say.
I always ignored his warning because it was my short cut and I needed to get to school early I didn't want to get whipped. I made my way through the neighborhood saying hello to all the adults and dodging all the little kids running around playing. I got to class early as usual along with 98 other kids, I sat next with my friends and I brought up "Did you guys hear about what is going to happen today?" "Yeah! But I heard that they were just going after government officials." One of my friend
said. "But there's people who take advantage of this and go out to just do bad things" The other friend said. That really put worry in my heart the whole day in class I couldn't focus I was sitting in my crowded wooden seat wondering if it would happen and what I would do if the protest did happen. The teacher carried on with his lesson that day was gym day, but it was canceled, they didn't want us to go outside. At about noon when it was lunch time most of us weren't eating because the vendors who usually came out to sell us lunch didn't come not a single one by this time you couldn't see a single soul outside every house was locked tight. One of our classmates yelled "LOOK OVER THERE! THERE'S SMOKE!" everyone rushed to the window I saw dark thick smoke rising high in the air. "Class is dismissed!" My teacher said packing his bags. My friend and I both were going the same direction so we walked together in the deserted neighborhood up to the main street I saw a group of men with machetes wearing black mask jumping, screaming and chanting they were tires burning in the middle of the street the men had blocked the roads and the market. I look at my friend and told him see you at school tomorrow. He didn't say anything, he just went left and I went right. I walked a couple steps and a man grabbed me. My heart dropped. Oh God what is he going to do to me? I thought to myself. But the man simply asked me "What are you doing out at this time? You know horrible things could happen to you." I kept quiet then, he asked "Do you need help getting home?" I shake my head saying yes in fear. He took my hand and told me to keep my head low incase there was any bullets flying by and also he told me to stay away from the streets. We walked down a couple blocks and I had already seen two dead bodies one was a female police officer and the other was a young boy who was probably out just trying to make a little money and was caught in the protest. The man had noticed I was staring at the boy's body for a while and he said "You don't want that to be you. Do you?" I didn't respond I turned my head forward and just kept following the man's footstep. We walked in stealth until we came across an intersection. "You have to cross this street and make a left here." I told the man. He grabbed my hand looked around carefully the coast was clear and we raced across the street and into the neighborhood. We continued our journey to my home then I wondered why this man out at this time when he knew that he wasn't supposed to be out, so I tucked his shirt and asked him "Sir, what are you doing out here at this time?" He looked at me and answered "I live back up there I saw you out and I came out to help you." How nice of him thought. we continued until we reached the local deli about 5 minutes from my house and i spotted my mom outside the deli with a bunch of other people and I ran across the street crying she hugged me and asked if I was okay I shook my head and introduced her to the man whose name I did not know. She shook his hand and said thank you for helping him. I dont remember what happened after that but the man left and I hadn’t seen him since but to this day i’m truly grateful for this stranger did for me.
The sweat was dripping down my face as I pushed the weights off my chest. Everyone ran towards their bags after a student said there was a gun in school. Twitter was the first source that we checked just to make sure. Boom! The door slammed open as coach Ben yells “Hurry up and get out”. My heart started beating faster and faster. We didn’t know what was going on. As we were running to the gym everyone was panicking and pushing each other. I could feel the burn on my elbow but I didn’t know what it was. When we got to the gym my elbow was covered in blood. We were told to get down and stay quiet. Later on we were told a student brought a gun to school and was planning on committing suicide. That was one of many gun incidents at my high school.
Unfamiliarity, in the broadest sense, can evoke a feeling of fear or anxiety. However, my unique cultural upbringing has made me comfortable with unfamiliarity, and eager to embrace differences among people with compassion and tolerance. I am the product of a cultural infusion—I was born in the United Kingdom to an English father, but was influenced by the Turkish customs of my mother. While living in England, I grew up eating dinner on the floor, listening to Turkish music on the radio, and waking up to a poster of Kemal Ataturk. I spent every summer living in Turkey where I learned the language, saw the way different people lived, and became familiar with the practices of Islam. At 14 years old I was immersed in yet another culture when I
Personal narratives allow you to share your life with others and vicariously experience the things that happen around you. Your job as a writer is to put the reader in the midst of the action letting him or her live through an experience. Although a great deal of writing has a thesis, stories are different. A good story creates a dramatic effect, makes us laugh, gives us pleasurable fright, and/or gets us on the edge of our seats. A story has done its job if we can say, "Yes, that captures what living with my father feels like," or "Yes, that’s what being cut from the football team felt like."
Student protest was definitely influential for the creation of the DACA program. Younger people are the ones benefiting from the program and they were the ones who have been advocating for the creation of legislation since the early 2000s when a similar bill was proposed called the DREAM act. They had private meetings with various legislative members discussing and urging them to pass legislation. A lot of undocumented youth came out publicly about their legal status in this country as a way to give a face to the youth they were fighting to protect. They also took the streets to protest, have demonstrations and march countless times. Students from different parts of the country would also march hundreds, thousands of miles to Washington D.C.
Did you know that there has been an average of 1 school shooting every week this year? We are barely 11 weeks into 2018 and the tragedy of school shootings have been sweeping the country from California to Virginia. There are teachers in multiple states that are authorized to conceal weapons on their campus. Some students feel safe knowing that their teachers hold a gun, however some may think their lives are in danger.
From a young age, I was very curious. Curiosity caused my mind to see everything from a different perspective than most. I saw what could be improved and how I could improve. For example, when it came to editing movies, I was always able to see what could how it could have been better or I questioned how they had created it. My curiosity led me to try many different activities throughout high school, such as film camps, stage managing for plays, yearbook, and even creating videos for Rochester High School’s awards day. Finally, my junior year, I decided it was time I made films of my own for competitions. I wanted to have something that I could call my own. When it came to the two films I did for contests, I was there throughout the whole process.
In 1973, Augusto Pinochet, Commander in Chief of the Chilean army, became the dictator of Chile, South America. With Pinochet’s 17-year military rule, came a number of constitutional and economic reforms allegedly implemented in order to stabilize the economy of Chile; this was done through the privatization of state controlled agencies, including the education system. Over the years, the quality of education in Chile dramatically decreased due to an overall increase in the number of private universities, as well as, lack of investment and insufficient funding; Chile’s per student spending allowance is only $2,694 compared to the average of $7,525. The owners of Chile’s for profit universities set fees arbitrarily and rarely reinvest the profits back into the institutions; the misappropriation of school funding has had detrimental effects on the education system due to inaccessibility and the lack of a competent and capable teaching staff employed. A majority of Chilean citizens cannot afford to attend private universities and only 40% of Chilean students qualify for a free education. Often students must choose between being inundated for decades by inflated student loans, or forgo an education altogether and go directly into the labor force. Students who risk massive financial debt to attend privatized universities and training schools often graduate without the skills necessary to be successful in the job market. Although, a new government was installed in 1993, the Pinochet era constitution and economic policies are still in place. This system disproportionately favors the wealthy and exacerbates economic inequalities between Chileans. (Slater, 2012)
Imagine a week of school with no technology, no cell phones, and no promethean boards. What happens you are at school in need of the internet and cannot us it, but you have a research paper due Friday? Students and teachers should take this into consideration. Our school will be completely slowed down. It is very important that parents take a stand, because their child’s education is in jeopardy. My education along with fellow classmates is at risk of falling behind. Therefore Shannon High should not participate in National Shut Down Week.
Dr. D is a cardiothoracic surgeon. He was my hero. He may well still be, even though he is a throw-back to the days when I was more concerned about science than symbolism.
“ Do you want to hear the good news first or the bad news first ?” just like any other fifth grader my age, I responded and
I am by myself wearing my blue jeans and an old flannel shirt. It is cool outside but I decided to leave my gloves at home, feeling comfortable with my warm shirt and my sturdy boots.
It was Friday morning and I was in the 5th grade at the time. My father decided to pull both me and my brother out of school. My mother wasn’t home. She had already gone up to the hospital with my grandmother.
Evolution Of Protests There are tons of protests that have been happening way back as far a people can remember. The point of the protests are for people to express how they feel about a certain topic and what they want to do about that situation. A protest can be held for practically anything. Most protests tend to occur while a war is happening or after a big or tragic event.
It was dark that night, I was nervous that this dreadful day was going to get worse. Sunday, October 23, 1998 I wanted to start writing this to tell about the weird things i’m starting to see in this new neighborhood. Gradually I keep seeing pots and pans on the sink suddenly move to the floor. I would ask my sister but she is out with my mom and dad getting the Halloween costumes. When they got home I didn’t tell them what I saw because i've seen Halloween movies and I have to have dissimulation otherwise the ghost will come out and get me first. October 24, 1998 I think I got a little nervous yesterday with the whole ghost thing. 12:32pm, Went to eat lunch with the family today and I go to get my coat. I heard the words furious and madness,
My mom was incarcerated during the time so I lived with my Aunt Pompom. Aunt Pompom never let me and my cousins wake up late for school and if we did, we were driven. Coincidentally on this day both my cousin Zay and I over slept. So we jump up frantically and start putting on our clothes. In the mist of putting on my clothes I come on my menstrual cycle a week before it is supposed to come on. Then, to top that off when we tried to get my aunt up and she told us “yall over sleeping ass better walk”. She did not care if it was my birthday or not. So sadly Zay and I start walking and little did I know nature was also against me, it started to drizzle. I could feel every drip that dropped on me, I just knew I would smell like a wet dog once I got to school. The feelings I had walking were unimaginable I could have just clasped to the ground right then and there because there was no way my day could be enlightened it been ruined from the moment I
