A Memorable Night Trek To Kunti Betta Travelogue With the summer getting better of me, I was craving for a cool place to escape. At the same time, it had been quite some time since an amazing trek to the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand. A night trek had been on my mind for a while and it made perfect sense now to plan that as I had no mood to venture out in the summer sun. After talking to a couple of friends and shortlisting destinations, I finalised on Kunti Betta. My reason were: a) I wanted a fairly simple trek, since it was my first night trek, and b) I wanted it to be as closer to Bangalore as possible. And Kunti Betta satisfied both the conditions, so without further ado I enrolled for the trek with a local trekking club. About Kunti …show more content…
However, the best time to visit it during the day, is around cooler months between of September to February. Trekking in monsoons is not recommended as the path gets slippery. Visiting in summer is not recommended unless you are specifically going for a night trek. The temperature at summit is pleasant during night even in summers. The Night Trek It was a clear night with a waxing crescent of moon. With the torches on, we followed the instructions of our trek leader. The initial stretch passed through a clearing leading towards the hill. This was the easy part of the trek. Soon the terrain changed and we were gradually ascending. In the insufficient night light, I saw the path was surrounded by boulders. At one point, almost halfway through the hike, the path became narrow, passing between huge boulders. It required us to drop our bags through the passage and push ourselves to climb through the gap. Except for a few stretches, the trail was a fairly simpler one, with a well-trodden route. I was being extra careful and walked rather cautiously. The entire climb took about 2 hours at a moderate pace. Climbing a hill in the calm of a night, was one of its kind experience for me. It even drizzled for a few minutes, just enough to cool the
He fig-ured that the normal half hour walk home might take as long as two hours in snow this deep. And then there was the wind and the cold to contend with. The wind was blowing across the river and up over the embankment making the snow it carried colder and wetter than the snow blanketing the ground. He would have to use every skill he’d learned, living in these hills, to complete the journey without getting lost, freezing to death, or at the very least ending up with a severe case of frostbite be-fore he made it back to Ruby.
To add to the difficulty of the trails is the extreme elevation changes. The re are ironically enough thirteen climbs which result in more than 10,000 feet of climb per loop. This is obviously accompanied by an equal amount of descent. One runner described it as climbing 100 floors of stairs in your first mile, going back down on second mile and continuing this for twenty miles. The course amasses an average grade of over 20% and between 50 and near 100 percent grade on the abandoned trails and bushwhacking sections. The grade is the reason that the trails have been abandoned or not built in the first pace. Each climb bears a unique name which in many cases gives a good idea of their nature.
I thought we were close to getting out but them I climbed up a tree and saw that I was wrong. We need to go north. I saw a little rustic old cabin up that way. And that was the closest point of exit. Which at that point was the best way to go. But up north the forest look even thicker which was not good. There was fruit and meat that would be a good kill so we could eat. So off we went. The only way now to tell days was the sun but even at some points we couldn 't see it.
...ot always make progress everyday due to the harshness of the trip. On April sixteenth, they start to go from the Base Camp to Camp One, and this is the real beginning of their journey. Shortly after, they leave for Camp Two, and the trip is going well so far. At over 20,000 feet up, a dead body is seen. People are treated for medical conditions at the second camp, and soon need to keep moving up to the third camp. A storm hit during the journey, right before reaching the fourth camp.
admired in awe the huge steep hills that we had traveled, that we had conquered. The

... to be inside this precarious place, I was careful with every movement. As we both lay in our bags, the cave's darkness soon soothed our eyes and sleep came to our tired bodies. Striking camp early in the morning we traversed over the white, moon lit landscape. We arrived at the car for a late lunch, which ended our camping trip.
The skies were clear and a very bright blue. We unpacked our gear from the car and started hiking on the trail. Walking on the rocky trail was hard and tiring but the views were great. There were areas that were very grassy and green and others that seemed very dry. Our trail wasn’t on the green side.
Wiping the sweat from my brow I called a halt to the crew. Phil and I dumped our packs and found a comfy boulder to rest on. I looked back to where the last guys were coming from back down the trail. They had stopped talking a while back and marched slowly along the dirt trail. Phil produced an energy-bar he’d saved from breakfast and began to munch on it as I drained another water bottle. After the refreshing drink I laid back against the rock and stared up at the pine trees. But a moment later, hearing grumble about sore legs, I sat up, grinning, “By the map we only have another couple hours.”
I knew taking this shortcut was a mistake, yet I didn't think I had enough strength to keep climbing this monumental cliff with the others. The humidity was affecting my vision and the ground now started to spin. The muscles in my legs felt

As I began to walk this trail, I began to recollect the days of when I was a kid playing in the woods, the birds chirping and the squirrels running free. The trees interlocking each other as if I am walking through a tunnel with the smell of fresh pine and a hint of oak all around me; a hint of sunshine every now and then is gleaming down on the beat path. This path is not like your ordinary path, it has been used quite some time, as if hundreds of soldiers have marched this very path.
