Almost in every career psychology is used therefore it becomes important to be able to link it to the career path. As a psychiatric nurse there are numerous topics that tie in to this career choice. This is probably one of the most demanding fields where the knowledge of psychology is essential. Law and psychology, schizophrenia is significant topics that connect to my career. When it comes to law and psychology it is very important to know about the Health Insurance and Accountability Act better known as HIPPA. HIPPA is a privacy law meant to prevent disclosure of individual’s health information without their consent. Although my personal opinion about this law is that it was not created with mental illness in mind. As a healthcare provider I need to abide to it no matter what my opinion might be. It is also common that families want to be part of treatment discussions but if I do not have the consent from the patient. I have to respect their choice. I have the advantage of knowing what it feels like to be in the position where a mentally ill relative is not willing to give that consent. For family members that consent means helping provide a better quality of life for their mentally ill loved one. I can suggest to the patient that getting family and caregivers involved on treatment plan/discussions will help by getting them educated on knowing how to treat and deal with them. With my experience I can be a positive influence, be empathetic towards the patient and family. Another topic that links to my career is schizophrenia. It is crucial I have the capacity to recognize and understand mental illnesses.

As time goes on, the law has put more emphasis on facility just like Bridgewater State Hospital in which many of the actions of the facility workers can face legal consequences such as facing prison time, fines, lawsuits, and etc. Society has a better understanding of why certain people act the way that they do and being more knowledgeable about psychology and mental diseases allows us to have a different approach when dealing with these topics or these individuals. In today’s era, there are many normal individuals who are willing to stand up for those who do not have a voice of their own. I believe that this change in one’s ability to stand up for another individual or group of individuals is what brought about change to the medical environment of those who are mentally

The career path I’m most interested in is counseling psychology, specifically mental health counseling. My interest in counseling began my freshmen year of high school when I had to do a project on what I wanted my future career to be. At the time, I had no idea what I wanted to do and a family friend suggested I look into music therapy. That sparked my interest in going into the psychology field and once I thought about how much of an impact I could make in people’s lives by doing counseling, I’ve never wanted to do anything else.
Hearing voices is considered to be a defining symptom of having a mental illness. The experience of these voices can often be categorised as a debilitating condition that can cause an extreme impact on daily life by weakening or disrupting contact with reality (Kalhovde, Elstad and Talseth 2013). However, according to the Mental Health Foundation (N.D) this is not always the case as many people hear voices but never find them to be a problem or feel as if they need to seek help from mental health services.

As humans when we are faced with any psychological or emotional problems, our initial thought is to turn to a therapist, doctor or any other health practitioners. Our initial thought when we are faced with problems regarding our health is to turn to a health professional because for ages that’s how it has been. When it comes to our health, health professionals nowadays do more harm than help. Many might disagree, but often patients are misdiagnosed with mental illnesses they do not have. Misdiagnosis occurs when a therapist or other health practitioners decide that a patient is suffering from a condition that he or she may not be suffering with. When misdiagnosed, patients are given unnecessary treatment, which could potentially

In the past, mental illness was taboo to discuss and there was fear surrounding the topic. However, remarkable strides have been made in figuring out the causes of the disease and weighing the most effective treatments specialized for each specific disease. According to the American Psychotic Association, “A mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.”
I never noticed how much psychology could be incorporated into everyday life. But really, any decision or action you take is related to it. I have personally been extremely interested in social psychology: why people do things because of social norms, what people do in order to look socially acceptable, etc. Others topics I also find interesting are sensation and perception; how past experiences can influence how you perceive the things around you, states of consciousness; how things that have happened in your day can be transferred into a mash of events in your dreams, motivation and emotion; what makes a person do something or what makes a person start or stop procrastination, and lastly: personality; what characteristics and traits stand out the most in a person, what makes a person who they are.
Psychology deals with the study of mental processes and a variety of behaviors. In order to fully comprehend ourselves, we need to understand the causes of our behaviors and our outlook on life. Habits and behaviors have positive and negative effects in our life. When we know ourselves and learn about our unique personality, we can develop and pursue goals. Psychology also helps us to understand other people and the differences of people. Gaining this knowledge can improve the relationships and enhance our communication skills. Throughout the psychology course I gained knowledge in various areas, and the topics that impacted me the most included: the introvert, anxiety disorders, stress management, self discipline and how to develop strong relationships.
Psychology has big role in my future career because I will be working with patients every day and I need to understand them and help them. Things I learned in this class are the most important things that helps me achieve my goals. If I understand basics of human behavior, I will better able to understand and treat patients. I want to understand my patient’s emotional needs and reactions in order to communicate with them. Most of all, I need them to trust me because patients who trust their doctors are more likely to open up with their symptoms and problems. For example: young patients may be more afraid than adults. They may have difficulties in understanding their illness. Doctor can apply his/her knowledge of child development and psychology and relate to the young patients in a way that is helpful for both of them. Moreover, it also helps me see how patients are describing their illnesses. Most of the patients describe their illness in a negative way and only few are optimistic. So psychology plays really big role in medical
