It is something about the holiday season that I start to reminisce back to my childhood. Most likely because of all the many festivities, I was forced to go to as a kid. I hated attending these gatherings. As a child, you could describe me best as a “home body”. At every Thanksgiving I sat in the back corner of my Aunt Tammy’s house and watched as my cousins played and the adults spoke about their past and present lives. Now that I look back, I wish I would have made the most out of these moments, but all I could do is impatiently waiting to indulge in all the delicious holiday food. I will never forget the Thanksgiving back in 2010. It was the last one before my Aunt’s husband, Floyd, passed away. My mom always contributed to the feast by
Mere words can't describe how happy I was to cook. Tea cakes, sweet potato pie, honey glazed pound cake, Roasted turkey and leafy greens. I get to Make them all. Of course since I'm a spoiled brat I had to get my hair ready with my apron. Then and only then will I be able to cook. We were in the kitchen all day. You could just. Smell the richness of the turkey. I could almost taste the silky cream sweet potato pie. It would make your mouth water . Halfway through cooking Most of our family was already here (They were going to sleep the night) They pitched in to help, without them we would’ve been cooking through Thanksgiving.
The crisp, cool, and cinnamon air filled the morning of Thanksgiving in 1987. Although I was only two years and eleven months old, I remember the scratchy, fuzzy, purple- footed pajamas that I was wearing that morning. After I woke up, I "helped" my mom make her famous orange- cranberry relish, got dressed in my cream sweater dotted with cherries and my navy pleated skirt, topped off with my favorite cream fuzz- warn tights, and before I knew it we were out the door to my grandmother's house. After an early dinner with my grandparents, mom, and dad, my grandfather and dad left to catch the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day football game, leaving the rest of us to find entertainment of our own.
Do you have a very important memory that you are sure will never leave your head? Well, um.. I do! This memory that i’m about to tell you about is very, very important to me. Every year we used to go to my Pawpaw’s for thanksgiving. It was so much fun. We would all get to his house and go inside. My Pawpaw basically lived in his garage! When we would get to his house, guess where he was! His garage! We would go say hi and what for more people to get to his house. My Mawmaw would make the best food ever! When more people got to there house we would go inside and eat. They had two tables and the kids would sit at one and the adults would sit at the other one. Well, it was time to get my food. I got my food. One thing that I got was mashed potatoes
My parents traveled for a living, and even though they were gone a lot I still remember them being home ever holiday. We carved pumpkins, decorated, and dressed up each year. I remember running
The primary purpose of Thanksgiving Day is to unite together, and give thanks to God for the bounties and blessings that He gave us during the previous year. I made sure to arrive on the time I was expected to, as I knew Americans shows respect for being on time. There were five members in the family, a husband and wife, and their three children. The house was made clean, decorated with hangings and other beautiful accessories like holiday candles, and images of turkeys, and autumn fruits and vegetables, placed on several tables and the walls around the house. Another family, a couple and their two kids, were also invited as guests. Everyone was dressed in their best clothes, and was in a joyful, cheerful mood to enjoy the event. We were gathered around the table, everyone said grace and their respective thanks to God before starting lunch. It felt warm and comforting, sitting together with love, appreciation and concern for each other. The conversation flowed around the table, and nobody was left out. Even the pet of the house, a large hairy dog sat few feet away, enjoying his meal and being a part of th...
Growing up as an only child I made out pretty well. You almost can’t help but be spoiled by your parents in some way. And I must admit that I enjoyed it; my own room, T.V., computer, stereo, all the material possessions that I had. But there was one event in my life that would change the way that I looked at these things and realized that you can’t take these things for granted and that’s not what life is about.
Christmas of 2005 will forever be my favorite memory. 2005 was the year my grandma came to visit us. The reason she did was because of her husband, Bartolo, was getting violent with her. Bartolo was never involved as a parent. Leaving my grandma, Rachel, to take care of eight children. She did an amazing job though. Three woman, including my mom, and five men, three of which are now lawyers. Bartolo was and probably still is an alcoholic,
Lina asked me to fly her home for a feast, Vicki said I am her second daughter and should go to her family Thanksgiving dinner, Renee always gives me her love and hope I could go to FL..I am grateful for what I have in my life. Hope I will have my loved ones celebrate in my house next
Personal Narrative There lay her limp body staring up at us. Her cold eyes were no longer
When Halloween is over, most people get excited about Christmas, but for me, I get excited about Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is one of the best times of the year for me, I get to talk to my family and eat my grandmother’s amazing turkey, but the leftovers take the real prize. My parents always take
SWISH! I turn my head to the right with a grin and see my mom cheering as I scored my first points of the season. The last game of the season I scored my first points of my middle school basketball “career.” Now sit back and relax as you read the story of how I got my first points in middle school basketball.
On the Monday October 27th, 2014, for the first time in 4 years I did not wake up at 5:30 in the morning, I was not putting on a green skivvy shirt and shorts. There was no formation, no one that was higher command I had to report to, telling me where I had to go, what time I had to eat breakfast, what was I doing this day or what our platoon plans were for the day. There were no PT (physical training) I had to do this morning. Instead, I woke up grab a regular t-shirt, khaki shorts, and my two sea bags full of clothing and gear that I collected during my time in the Marine Corps. I threw everything in my vehicle and drove from Camp Pendleton, California to Quincy, Illinois. Within two weeks I was accepted to Southern Illinois University Carbondale. For three days, I stayed at the
The whole family would cook their own specialty. My mother’s best dishes are pernil, arroz con guandu, y ensalada de coditos which, means pork leg, rice and pigeon peas, and macaroni salad in Spanish. My family always looks forward to every thanksgiving just because of my mother’s cooking. Last Thanksgiving was different from every other thanksgiving, my mother was sick so she couldn’t cook her specialties. Instead of my mother making her famous dishes, my aunt was in charge of making them.
My full name is Zachary Randall Durbin and when I wasn’t born yet my mom was going to name me Mathew. I don’t like that name because it doesn’t seem like it would fit me. Luckily my Uncle came to town 2 days before I was born and I’m not sure what he did to convince my mom of agreeing with the name Zach. I love my uncle for that. Well when I was 3 years old my real I got my name from my uncle because my mom wanted me to be Matthew but thanks to my uncle I have the name that seems to fit me the most.
Finally, we arrived at our destination. I left the car leaving my parents and little brother behind and ran up the steps to my grandma’s house. I just had to be the first one to knock on her door, so I did. She opened the door for me, and I went inside parting with the bitter cold and darkness surrounding me. Inside the house I was immediately encircled with the aromas of her Christmas cooking and baking. A real fresh Christmas tree which was already beautifully adorned with old family ornaments perforated the air with more holiday aromas. I went into the kitchen with my mom, and together we helped my grandma finish preparing the Christmas Eve dinner.
